Nivea Sun. The new summer feeling: light & non-sticky
Weekend Guide

This, I hereby decree, shall henceforth be a Weekend of Celebration. Of course we have some stunning DJ nights lined-up for you, but why not lay aside that typical London apathy for a couple of days. American Independence, good Norwegian music (yes, it is possible), Casanova, Mexican Luchadores, Bossa Nova, water, jelly... You name, and we're all over it like hazelnut honey spread. So come on: join the love.

This week's guide is brought to you in association with Nivea, and with the sunshine finally setting in on the big smoke, it's only right. So this weekend, between all the bars and clubs, the art galleries and restaurants and naked bike rides, grab yourself a bottle of Nivea sun lotion, hit your nearest park, and sieze some of that summer spirit.

FRIDAY

artAmerican Late: Independence Day
Sure, you could wolf down a cheeseburger at a diner, chasing your shots of JD with a few bottles of Lone Star as your fire your own 13-gun salute into the air. But there's such delicious irony in celebrating the day that the US booted out their evil British overseers with a celebration of classic American-ness (automobiles, lindy hop, the American Scene exhibition) at, yep, the British Museum.

Time:
6:30-9pm
Place:
Great Court, British Museum, Great Russell St, WC1B 3DG
Cost:
Free
Info:
britishmuseum.org

OtherJelly Banquet
Following the news of an enraged jelly-wrestling Cambridge grad lamping an innocent bystander, it seems jelly has lost it's wobbly innocence; by George, if those dignified intellectuals can't make it work, who can? Architectural foodsmiths Bompas & Parr are giving it back some of its gravitas with over 1000 specially commissioned jelly sculptures. Come dressed as a trifle or jelly. Seriously.

Time:
8pm-3am
Place:
UCL Quadrant, Gower St, WC1E 6BT
Cost:
£5
Info:

djAnnie
I gotta admit, when faced with the hard, cold, Scandinavian fact that Norway's chief musical exports consist of A-ha and that Aqua girl, I star-jumped outta my seat upon word that lolly-loving, delightfully contagious, indie-poptastic princess Annie is in town, threw on my sequined disco pants, and shoved a cherry Chupa Chup in my salivating gob. You learn something new everyday.

Time:
7.00pm-2.30am
Place:
Proud Galleries, The Horse Hospital, Chalk Farm Rd, NW1 8AH
Cost:
£6 before 9, £8 after

Star Over London
How the once glamorous airship became almost obsolete is beyond us; and those pioneering folks at Stella Artois agree. For six weeks this summer, their 'Star Over London' is providing bird's eye trips above our stunning city, and we have a pair of exclusive tickets for the preview voyage at 5pm on Tuesday 8th July. To win 'em, make us laugh: Who/what would you like to look down on?

SATURDAY

NightlifeCasanova Masked Ball
To celebrate the upcoming new biography of Casanova's life, grab a mask, string your corset, and get in touch with your inner lothario for The Last Tuesday Society's steamiest event. Surround yourself with erotic models, get fed sweet nothings by beautiful ladies, and be admired in the House of Flattery. Warning: Sigmund the Gatekeeper will be on door duty, so dress to impress.

Time:
8:30pm-4am
Place:
The Arts Theatre, 6/7 Newport St, WC2H 7JB
Cost:
£10-£15
Info:

otherLucha Libre
Masked villains and heroes; acrobatic theatricality and overblown mock-violence; oohs, ahs, and far more fun than you've experienced since childhood. Sunday morning TV wrestling was a staple of my youth, but it was nothing compared to the mythical wonder of Mexican Luchadores. Besides, when else do you get to watch a ring of sweaty, masked men slap each other about without it being gay? Ah the naïveté.

Time:
2pm and 7pm
Place:
Roundhouse, Chalk Farm Rd, NW1 8EH
Cost:
£15-£75

djWarehouse Party Freakout
Usually drink, usually dance, usually freakout? Do it all simultaneously in the comfort of this bespoke, suped-up, electronic, summer sound party. Kings of neon, MSTRKRFT, gossip remixer Tronik Youth and a spot of risky burlesque from Roxy Velvet will ensure you throw some big colourful shapes on a nearly secret warehouse floor. Le freak, c'est chic: oh yeah.

Time:
9.30pm-5.30am
Place:
Secret Warehouse, Hewitt St, EC2
Cost:
£10-£13

Samsung Soul Midnight
These days, it's all about branding. A super deluxe limited edition burger is instantly better than a standard beef patty. And so the new Samsung Soul Midnight phone, exclusive to Orange, is the next step up for fashion conscious mobile-mongers. We love the colour changing magic touch button, sleek black polished finish and super slim design; and hey, if star snapper Rankin says it's cool, who are we to argue?

MusicCrush
After a wee hiccup with the ubiquitous Hearn St Car Park, this Lex Records extravaganza has re-settled at Cargo, with the same killer line-up that's had me twitching eagerly all week. With the likes of Neon Neon, Boom Bip, Har Mar Super Star, Willie Isz, Heartbreak, Gruff Rhys, Khujo Goodie, and Ali Renault, I'm getting giggly like a schoolboy at a candy factory all over again.

Time:
6pm-12am
Place:
Cargo, 83 Rivington St, EC2A 3AY
Cost:
£16

MusicBossa Nova Festival
Brazilians: ouch. Have a less painful experience, with far less intermittent tweezing, at the Bossa Nova Festival. Joao Gilberto came up with the distinctive rhythm, meaning 'new thing', some 50 years ago, and it's now filtered into modern music from Neil C Young, Rio Jazz, and Nouvelle Vague, as well as exhibitors offering everything from holidays to caipirinhas, all of which guaranteed to take the pain away.

Time:
1-7pm
Place:
Coin St, Bernie Spain Gdns, SE1 9PP
Cost:
Free
Info:

musicWet Sounds
There are many interesting and varied underwater activities - from diving to snorkelling to well, you know - but unquestionably the one that trumps them all is sticking your head under and trying to communicate with your nearest aquatic chum through water-muffled words. And now, it is Art. 'Sound Art' to be exact, with an underwater soundtrack to match. Well they do say that dolphins have superior intellects.

Time:
3pm
Place:
London Fields Lido, London Fields, E8 3EU
Cost:
£16.50

EAT

Bureau
With a glut of members clubs to choose from in London now, new kid Bureau would have to be offering something a bit different to stand out from the rest, and it does.

Yes, it's in Soho, yes, it has that cool downtown vibe (complete with rotating chandeliers), but the difference is that you get your own swipe card which not only guarantees a discreet arrival and exit but also stores your own personal playlist and bespoke cocktail choices.

I haven't actually tested it to see if, once I've swiped in, I descend the stairs to Hot Chip and arrive at my table to see mixologist Julian de Feral, drinks trolley pulled up to my table, putting the finishing touches to my signature Summer Breeze (Genever, elderflower cordial, raspberry puree and fresh mint with a dash of soda) but I'm picturing something along those lines.

In terms of food, the eggs Benedict is a treat and the Bureau sandwich, made with Poilane bread, Gloucester Old Spot bacon, organic chicken and sun-blush tomatoes hits the spot nicely, whether you're after dancing fuel or lunching with your laptop.

The other good bit is that the club's capacity is just eighty, so it's not big - but it's clever.

Hours:
Mon-Fri 12pm-3.30am / Sat 6pm-3.30am
Place:
13 Kingly Court, W1
Cost:
Membership from £175

Daylesford Organic Cafe & Store
No-one embodies the 'organic dream' better than the formidable Lady Bamford and her Daylesford Organic empire that first poked out a shoot in Gloucestershire and is now threatening to ooze, like extra thick double cream, into all the most chi-chi corners of London.

The three-storey Pimlico Road emporium that opened earlier this year - and is to be duplicated on Westbourne Grove by the end of this one - has it all: bakery, cheese and deli counters, homewares upstairs, lovely little tables outside and a separate butcher's and garden store just across the road if you're feeling you're still lacking something.

The eat-in menu, which changes on a daily basis depending on what's freshest, includes things like potted ham with toast and piccalilli and smoked kipper salad with soft quail eggs. How was I served? Very nicely thank you - with extra complimentary shortbread hearts, a wink and a smile.

And credit crunch or not, when I was in there the place was heaving, not just with the chic and well-heeled but with builders buying their take-away filter coffees and organic bacon butties.

Good to know I'm not the only one buying into the dream.
