Weekend Guide

Next weekend's a bit of a funny one. Not only is it a Bank Holiday (more drinking/hangover time: huzzah!), but Carnival Weekend to boot (meaning either charge West London, or flee it, depending). No matter what you get up to, though, it'll be messy. So then, for this weekend we propose a mixture of downtime, distraction and training taken once daily for the next three days. Junkies' orders.

This weekend's guide is brought to you in association with glacéau vitaminwater. With the hysterical ha ha ha hydration - this week's Thursday Night Hydration Club installment - happening tonight, remember to pop down after work for another quirky evening of music, laughter therapy, free glacéau vitaminwater and cocktails.

Click here for photos of the last great Thursday Night Hydration Club to get you in the mood.

Thursday August 14, 6-9pm • 3-4a Little Portland St,

FRIDAY

FilmpShoot Yr Idols
This is an achingly cool cinematic micro-season which really must not be missed by anyone with even an iota of interest in the American art scene of the 1950s-70s. With Edo Bertoglio's Warholian Face Addict as its centrepiece, the series also includes documentaries about LA's Ferus gallery, the disappearance of Danny Williams, and, screening tonight, the relationship between the enigmatic collector, Sam Wagstaff, and Robert Mapplethorpe.

Time:
9pm
Place:
ICA, The Mall, SW1Y 5AH
Cost:
£8
Info:
www.ica.org.uk

DJFidgit
It's a hip-hop thang down in South London tonight, as Plan B bring in A-Track (DMC champ and one half of the Fool's Gold label) to mix things up as he only he can do. So if you fancy a break from all that hardcore electro-carnage, the bitch-pop hysterics and slick-backed vintage swing-a-thons that's been doing the rounds, step up and catch the man in action.

Time:
9pm-4am
Place:
Plan B, 418 Brixton Rd, SW9 8BJ
Cost:
£10 adv.
Info:

BOOK AHEAD

Shoreditch Shuffle
My, my, where to begin! For two nights in September, the infamous Shoreditch triangle (from 333 to AOP; the Hoxton Pony to Time For Tea) is going to be awash with the biggest, craziest, most frenzied mix of DJs, bands, activities, and all round carnage imaginable, including Mama Shamone, Akira the Don, and the Five O'Clock Heroes.

Info:
September 13-14, Tickets £20-£30

SATURDAY

DJBurlington Project
But of course, if summer clubbing means nothing to you without some long, deep, intense house, then Elephant & Castle might actually be where you should be heading tonight, as the social networking cum DJ appreciation site, The Burlington Project, hit the Corsica Studios with the Chicago house legend that is Derrick Carter. And when we say they'll hit it, we have no doubt that they'll do it hard.

Time:
10pm-6am
Place:
Corsica Studios, Unit 5, Farrell Ct, Elephant Rd, SE17 1LB
Cost:
£15, £10 adv.
Info:

TheatreFesta!
The People's Palace Projects and The Young Vic unleash the essence of the Brazilian Festa on South London, bringing to life a veritable host of South American myths, heroes and legends. Tonight's performative explosion marks the culmination of a full three weeks of intensive, incorporative workshops in dance, theatre, mask-work and drumming, so should be nothing if not impressive.

Time:
5pm & 7:30pm
Place:
The Young Vic, 66 The Cut, SE1 8LZ
Cost:
£7.50

SoCo Social Photos
Last Saturday eve, the SoCo Social stormed the Ibizian shores for a one off Mardi Gras extravaganza. Straight outta New Orleans, The Hot 8 Brass Band kicked the festivities off right, and then with Giles on the drinks, Jag on the décor and Leatherhead, Alex Metric, and Lottie on the decks, much fun was had by all. Did we mention Giles' drinks? Soco summer punch: delish.

SUNDAY

otherTour de Hackney
Whilst Saturday's free festival will no doubt be fun, I'm personally a bit fest'ed out. So, getting into the spirit of the Shoreditch celebration without succumbing to the park-thang once more, how's about this two-wheeled tour through Hackney, taking in the Olympic Park, plenty of greenery, a few pubs (unofficially), bike ballet (a tragedy waiting to happen) and a Bike Polo tournament. With bikes for hire and great company, there's no excuse.

Time:
1-7pm
Place:
Starts and finished at Shoreditch Park
Cost:
Free

MusicBest Laid Plans
As Robert Burns once wrote: "The best laid plans of mice and men / often go tits-up when you're out on a Sunday night, planning on enjoying a quiet one, but mysteriously and without warning find yourself dancing like a Ritalin-spiked teenager till the wee hours." With live music, DJs and mini-cinema screenings, these just might be the Best Laid Plans yet.

Time:
2pm-12am
Place:
Proud Camden, Horse Hospital, Stables Market, NW1 8AH
Cost:
Free

We still love a bit of an artist/designer collaboration, and whist its not the newest news, Agnes has been doing it for years; grab the latest robotic t-shirts by New York Graffiti maistro Jean-Michel Basquiat; you'll be right on trend without having to succumb to Wall-E pyjamas.

Ida
I can't help wondering whether there would be less street crime if every neighbourhood had its own Ida.

It's not so much that the cooking at this little family-run Italian gem in Kensal Rise is life-changing, but more that the whole homely experience makes you feel like the world's not such a bad place after all.

Although, saying that, the food, which is mainly Piemontese-influenced, is not at all bad. The pasta is 'fatto a casa' (homemade), there are starters that combine tender aubergine, oozing burrata and tomatoes that taste like tomatoes, and hearty dishes like pot roast veal and meatballs with, of course, tiramisu to finish.

But it's the friendliness of the staff and owners, the candles on tables and the wonderfully shabby-chic, faded quality of the place, as if you could be part of a sepia-tinted photo, that really gives you that feel-good feeling.

It's the kind of place you can forgive for running out of cold rose, even on the hottest night - and that's saying something.

Hours:
Mon-Sat 6:30pm - 11:30pm. Closed Sun
Place:
167 Fifth Avenue, Queen's Park, W10 4DU
