Weekend Guide

I have one word for you, folks: Carnival. Yes, it's that time of year again, when we take our work-free Monday and use it as an excuse to write the whole three-day weekend off in a stream of sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll. Or admitting our age, and behaving properly. Or you could always escape to Ibiza for the weekend and escape this wretched excuse of a "summer". Tempting, no?

This weekend's guide is brought to you in association with glacéau vitaminwater. With their worryingly attractive helium karaoke - this week's Thursday Night Hydration Club installment- happening tonight, remember to pop down after work for another quirky evening of chipmunk solos, free glacéau vitaminwater and cocktails.

Click here for photos of the last great Thursday Night Hydration Club to get you in the mood.

FRI CAPTIVE STATE + FACTORY • SAT EASTERN ELECTRICS • SUN VYNER STREET • MON PROUD WEEKENDER
FRIDAY

MusicCaptive State + Factory
A bit of a mixed one this, as the Nick Franglen (of Lemon Jelly fame)-produced and Brian Eno-applauded electro-alt band, Captive State, precede their gig at 10:30pm with a joint performance alongside Factory of the latter's ever-changing, and much lauded production of Hamlet at 7:30. Think theatrical performance art in a Punchdrunk style, but with a high end electro-ish soundtrack. And a bonus afterparty under the same roof.

Time:
7pm-3am
Place:
Old Boys Club, 66 Boleyn Road, N16 8JG
Cost:
£10, £5 before 10pm
Info:

DJNoah and the Whale
Those almost irritatingly upbeat folk-pop sensations of the moment, Noah and the Whale, are settling into Islington's gem of a local, The Old Queen's Head, to spin a bit of vinyl (or CDs, I suspect), beside Kid Harpoon and a bevy of support. One to catch, most certainly, before a) they make it huge, and b) you get wrecked at Carnival or one of its alternatives this weekend.

Time:
8pm-2am
Place:
Old Queen's Head, 44 Essex Rd, N1 8LN
Cost:
£3

BOUJIS IBIZA, MONDAY AUG 25th

Boujis and Calla Longa – a match made in heaven.
This bank holiday Monday, the two are coming together for a fabulous Ibizian fiesta. Forget the city queues, hoards of people, and traffic jams. Here there'll be Balearic beats, champagne and cocktails galore, and a crowd that isn't afraid of going glam in the sand. Views will be pretty unbeatable and the over the years the celebs have included a string of A-listers

SATURDAY

MusicNotting Hill Carnival
My first experience of the beast that is Notting Hill Carnival involved emerging from the tube station to behold a trio of paramedics, conversing closely like Macbethian witches, whilst four poor Carnival wounded sat beside them, propped up against the wall, vomiting synchronously onto their own feet. Remember folks: pace yourself - it's a long one. And sort you after-parties now. The Strange Worlds one looks pretty good. As does everything, in fact, this weekend.

Time:
All day, all weekend
Place:
Throughout Notting Hill
Cost:
Free

DJEastern Electrics
Of course, should the idea of tackling the great West London beast fill you with a tingling dread, then how's about something at the diametrically opposite end of town? Maybe SE1 for a mammoth Mulletover all-dayer including sets from the Trailer Trash, Vice, and Neon Noise camps? And if you like it so much, stick around for a similarly insane line-up on Sunday.

Time:
2pm-5am
Place:
Ewer Street Car park, Gt Suffolk St, SE1 0NR
Cost:
£15 adv.

COMPETITION

Sancho Panza
We have teamed up with Bush Hall, one of London's most original venues, and Smirnoff, sponsor of the Terrace Bar at Bush Hall, to offer 5 lucky Urban Junkies readers the chance to win tickets to Sancho Panza's hotly anticipated Carnival after-party on Sunday, August 24th.

SUNDAY

DJSecretsundaze
It doesn't matter how great the gig is; after seven years it's hard for me to maintain interest in anything, let alone a club night. But then there are those occasions that practically holler for one of Giles and James's Secretsundaze all-dayers. Throw in the likes of Detroit's Keith Worthy, Carl Craig and Padded Cell's Richard Sen, and a day of minimal-techno-disco malarkey with a Monday off sounds pretty attractive.

Time:
2-10:30pm
Place:
The Arches, 51 -53 Southwark St, SE1 1RU
Cost:
£12, £15 adv.

otherVyner Street Festival
This is the second day in this year's Vyner Street Festival, celebrating the art-infused Eat End stretch, through the combined effort of The Eel Collective and the classic boozer, The Victory. Amidst the artists' market, Tatty Devine is hosting a stall once more, and the band line-up for the weekend includes the twisted world of The Bobby McGee's, plus blues and folk from the likes of The Intolerable Kidd and King And The Olive Fields.

Time:
2pm
Place:
Vyner St, E2
Cost:
Free

MONDAY

MusicProud Weekender
Two day festivals are one thing, but when it comes to competing with the mammoth demon out West, it would take something utterly perverse like, I don't know, a five-night, 15-band, 20-DJ stormer of an event, set somewhere local like, say, Proud in Camden, that didn't cost an arm and a leg, so didn't matter if you missed the odd one, to compete. Sorry? What was that? 'Done'?

Time:
All weekend
Place:
Proud Camden, Stable Market, NW1 8AH
Cost:
£10 per day, £20 for the weekend
Info:

Dance
Strictly Summer Ballroom
Monday's reared it's head, and maybe it was just Sunday that you took advantage of like a sneaky letch of a Best Man at a wedding party, but either way, the idea of more drinking brings you out in a curious shade of jade. How's about a touch of class then? And what's more classy than a day of social dancing, as live bands, DJs and demos provide the ultimate antithesis to Carnival carnage.

Time:
2pm-12am
Place:
Southbank Centre, Belvedere Rd, SE1 8XX
Cost:
Free

Red or Dead
It might be all about the staycation this year, but that's no reason to skimp on decent luggage. Short breaks in the great British countryside deserve as much style as a fortnight on the Riviera. Ahem. UJ loves these retro style weekenders from Red or Dead's Flying Ducks range. Well, at least they're used to the rain.

EAT

Aaya
It's a relief that Soho is becoming cool again when it comes to dining. For a long time the only point of eating there was because you could get a cheap bowl of pasta. Now, it may not be quite as cheap but at least you've got swanky hotspots like Barrafina and Quo Vadis serving more than decent food and now there's a very acceptable modern Japanese too.

Aaya might sound like something Cato would yell as he leapt from the top of a wardrobe onto Clouseau's head, but with Alan Yau's brother Gary at the helm you can be reassured you're in good hands - although with names like Gary and Alan it's slightly odd that no one has questioned their authenticity.

Anyway, dark horse Gazza has come up trumps with this cool and contemporary canteen. The sashimi is meltingly fresh (the scallops so tender you could spread them on toast), the sushi equally good (if you're still a sea urchin virgin, pop your cherry here) and there are other very nicely-done party pieces like king crab with ponzu jelly.

Are there any more Yau brothers out there we don't know about?
