I have one word for you, folks: Carnival. Yes, it's that time of year again, when we take our work-free Monday and use it as an excuse to write the whole three-day weekend off in a stream of sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll. Or admitting our age, and behaving properly. Or you could always escape to Ibiza for the weekend and escape this wretched excuse of a "summer". Tempting, no?
This weekend's guide is brought to you in association with glacéau vitaminwater. With their worryingly attractive helium karaoke - this week's Thursday Night Hydration Club installment- happening tonight, remember to pop down after work for another quirky evening of chipmunk solos, free glacéau vitaminwater and cocktails.

Proud Weekender
Two day festivals are one thing, but when it comes to competing with the mammoth demon out West, it would take something utterly perverse like, I don't know, a five-night, 15-band, 20-DJ stormer of an event, set somewhere local like, say, Proud in Camden, that didn't cost an arm and a leg, so didn't matter if you missed the odd one, to compete. Sorry? What was that? 'Done'? |

Aaya
It's a relief that Soho is becoming cool again when it comes to dining. For a long time the only point of eating there was because you could get a cheap bowl of pasta. Now, it may not be quite as cheap but at least you've got swanky hotspots like Barrafina and Quo Vadis serving more than decent food and now there's a very acceptable modern Japanese too.
Aaya might sound like something Cato would yell as he leapt from the top of a wardrobe onto Clouseau's head, but with Alan Yau's brother Gary at the helm you can be reassured you're in good hands - although with names like Gary and Alan it's slightly odd that no one has questioned their authenticity.
Anyway, dark horse Gazza has come up trumps with this cool and contemporary canteen. The sashimi is meltingly fresh (the scallops so tender you could spread them on toast), the sushi equally good (if you're still a sea urchin virgin, pop your cherry here) and there are other very nicely-done party pieces like king crab with ponzu jelly.
Are there any more Yau brothers out there we don't know about?
