And
like that, pff!, the holiday month is gone. And no more
August means more than no more holidays. That's right: no
more complaining about the missing Summer (it's essentially
Autumn now kids: scarves at the ready); no more mini weekend
guides (now we're back to the heavy-weight beasty); and
no more fun at all. Well, maybe a little bit of fun, yes?
This weekend's guide is brought to you in association with
the Shoreditch
Shuffle. For two nights next weekend, the infamous Shoreditch
triangle (from 333 to AOP; the Hoxton Pony to Time For Tea)
is going to be awash with the biggest, craziest, most frenzied
mix of DJs, bands, activities, and all round carnage imaginable,
including Mama Shamone, Akira the Don, and the Five O'Clock
Heroes. Click the banners more info.

The
Bolingbroke Pub & Dining Room
Formerly the Inebriated Newt, then
Nikson's, this Northcote Road landmark has now
been taken over by boutique company Renaissance
Pubs and, although it's only been quietly open
for a couple of weeks, locals are already referring
to it as The Boli.
Whether this is a good or a bad sign is unclear
as yet but the place makes a refreshing change
to the cafes that are overrun with yummy mummies
and Bugaboos during the day and the bars called
things like The Abyss and Inferno that become
slightly scary in the evening.
At the Bolingbroke you can get a proper pint
or a decent glass of wine in civilised surroundings
- light, airy and decked out with the familiar
sage green paintwork and shiny dark wood that
has become almost compulsory for gastropubs.
For lunch go for classics like the club sandwich,
and order extra chips which should arrive crisp,
golden and piping hot. For dinner try seared
scallops with pea puree and Cumbrian air-dried
ham followed by salt marsh lamb with anchovy
and caper butter, roast cherry tomatoes and
purple broccoli.
It's not ground-breaking but a good bet for
a lazy weekend and, for now, a much- needed
respite from the Northcote hordes.

Hawksmoor
There are those venues that, despite minimal
atmosphere, awful service and lousy fare, remain
consistently and inexplicably rammed with punters,
baying cattle-like at the bar with little regard
for either style or worth.
Easily overlooked on Commerical Street, the
cosy, bare-bricked, but often quiet Hawksmoor
is quite the opposite. Serving huge, choice
slabs of meat from the famed Ginger Pig, it
also offers an inspirational menu of contemporary
and über-classic cocktails from the award-winning
alco-maestro, Nick Strangeway. And yet, whilst
the bar's been around for a fair while now,
I am repeatedly amazed to find an inexplicable
lack of a nightly queue outside its wooden-slatted
windows.
Judge not the usual clump of post-work, high-rolling
City chaps within, and step past some of the
finest steaks in the city. Instead, pull up
a stool at the bar, pick a section in the cocktail
menu, or a spirit from the gorgeous back bar,
and work your way through. From futuristic floating
globes of 'Cointreau caviar' to authentic 19th
century punches, it's hard to be disappointed.
And if the legendary Mister Strangeway should
be present in all his goateed glory, do, with
all respect, get him to mix you up 'something
special'. Secret, home cask-rested gins, curious
infusions lurking on shelves, molecular alchemy
of the highest order...
Of course, if I find myself queuing for my
monthly Manhattan next time, I'm going to regret
this. In fact, forget everything I've said.
Terrible bar, that Hawksmoor. Wouldn't go there
if you paid me.
