Weekend Guide

It's been a disappointing week, and the Swiss are entirely to blame. Yes, sod neutrality, they've ruined our apocalyptic hopes with their dud atomic collision experiment which failed to go pop, let alone end the world, and then continued to irritate us by sending Federer out to beat our own angsty Andy. So we say, get sexy with Lady Luck, get shuffley in Shoreditch, and get wet with Boris. Yep, it's about as random as it gets, but we guarantee nobody'll be dissatisfied.

This weekend's guide is brought to you in association with the INVERTED. As part of this year's London Design Festival and London Fashion Week, Beyond the Valley have created two distinctly twisted environments around the Carnaby area, showcasing brand new fashion and design products in back-to-front and front-to-back versions, many of which have been created exclusively for the festival.

MusicForever Heavenly
Tonight marks the first instalment of what is set to be a cracking weekend of 18th birthday celebrations in the shape of an urban music festival, featuring the great and the good from Heavenly Recording's impressive roster. artDan Baldwin: Dead Innocent
Dan Baldwin is an artist who knows a thing or two about pictorial oxymorons. By smacking graphic references lifted from popular culture, art, religion and political history on top of impulsively daubed bright paint, his contradictory work rams together painting, collage, appliqué and printing with uplifting yet disquiet results. If a modern-day Aubrey Beardsley woke up one morning randomly engrossed by Pop, he'd probably make something a lil' like this.

Time:
12-6pm
Place:
Forster Gallery, 1 Chapel Place, Rivington St, EC2A 3DQ
Cost:
Free

NightlifeLadyluck London Weekender
I kind of wish Luck weren't a Lady for once. Just for tonight, let luck be a bloke. A fit, muscly bloke who happens to know how to wing me a few aces under his sleave. Failing that, I'll settle for the company of Lady Kamikaze, El Nino, and The Lovesick Cowboys. Ooooh, I'd let them roll my dice.

Time:
10pm - 3am.
Place:
Volupte, 7-9 Norwich St, EC4A 1EJ
Cost:
£10-£12

TONIGHT

Paradise
Top secret and hot off the press, we were sworn to secrecy about this one so couldn't give you more of a heads-up, but that sheik of dancefloor shenanigans, that don of the decks, everyone's favourite DJ, Erol Alkan (cue canned laughter), is playing a surprise set up at Paradise, whilst Micachu & the Shapes & Joe Driscoll take to the stage. See you down there. 8pm-2am, £5

OtherGreat River Race
Twenty years on, and the Great River Race is still as springy as when the first Cornish pilots, skiffs, and Viking longboats set sail off the glorious shores of Richmond in '88. Powered by enthusiastic, athletic, if not occasionally burly Homo sapiens, participants leave behind their loved-ones in an attempt to beat other Hawaiian war canoes in this 22 mile long race. Head to Greenwich for the triumphant finale.

Time:
2:05-5:20pm
Place:
Finish: Island Gardens, SE10 9HT

DJApocalypso
When you find big name DJs playing sets at what essentially amount to local boozers with cracking music policies, one of two things is generally to thank. Either the talent in question is having a bad month, or the venue has hit on a good thing. With James Lavelle (yes, he of Unkle) joining Punks Jump Up at the OQH, I'm guessing it's the latter.

Time:
8pm-2am
Place:
The Old Queens Head, 44 Essex Rd, N1 8LN
Cost:
£4

OtherMayor's Thames Festival
The mayor wishes to invite you to a festival celebrating London and it's Thames, complete with a Jive Stage and a Wishing Tree, Japanese Jamboree and a Soup Ceremony, plus the fantastical sounding Whoopee Club Carnival to top it all off, compered by Johnny Woo in a lantern lit 1920's style riverside Carnival Ball. Now you remember why we voted Boris. Let's just hope he doesn't fall in. Sigh...

8-10pm

Between Westminster & Tower Bridge

SUNDAY

MusicShoreditch Shuffle
Okay, so we haven't quite gotten over the mind-bogglingly clever new iPod 'shake to shuffle' feature. However, in the absence of such technological indulgence, you can re-create in fleshy real-time, the fine combination of music, theatre, art, fashion, film and vigorous hip-shaking over two-days and 17 venues across Shoreditch. From Five O'Clock Heroes and Kid Carpet to Man Like Me, quite frankly, I'm all shook up.

Time:
12pm-2am
Place:
Shoreditch Triangle, EC2-ish
Cost:
£20 day pass

OtherJimmy Doherty's Food & Wine Tasting Sessions
Jamie Oliver's bessie mate Jimmy gives some insight into how happy animals produce yummier meals. Which might raise suspicion in anyone who's experienced a Happy Meal. However, give it a chance, as he'll be joined by a Turkey farmer and some eco tomatoes. If you feel like you're starting to hallucinate wash it all down with Vinopolis' resident wine expert Tom Forrest, who'll be selecting wines and beers to complement this foodie's dream session.

Time:
12pm & 3pm
Place:
Vinopolis, 1 Bank End, SE1 9BU
Cost:
£59

otherNobel Textiles
When science and art meet, their union is either happily Leonardo da Vinci-esque, or a rather confusing affair reminiscent of school experiments involving paint, chemicals and boredom. Thankfully the former is comes to being as five Nobel prizewinners team up with Central Saint Martins research fellows to create collaborative textiles, fashions and furnishings, such as sea-urchin egg inspired wallpaper, amongst a cutting-edge season of talks and film. Far out.

Time:
12pm - 7pm
Place:
ICA, The Mall, E8
Cost:
Free

The new iPod Nano
The UJ office is lusting after these rainbow-coloured, technological eye candy confections. Shake 'em and they shuffle, turn them round to watch wide screen vids, or just admire the sexy curved aluminium and glass design. They even have a Genius feature which picks up on what kind of songs you like and creates custom playlists for you. Bye bye mix-tape.

EAT & DRINK

Min Jiang
I've been writing about pubs quite a lot recently so I thought I'd readdress the balance with a healthy dose of glamour.

Min Jiang is the posh new Chinese perched on top of the Royal Garden Hotel, and with its slick lacquered decor and impressive vistas over Kensington Gardens, it's a real 'get dressed up and enjoy the view' kinda restaurant. I'm generally more a cosy banquette kinda girl but this is show-offy food which requires a more formal setting and slightly over-attentive service - luckily, though, the food is so good you almost don't notice the fussing.

It's all beautifully, delicately executed, from the pretty, pastel-coloured dim sum to the green bamboo tea, not to mention the lobster with ginger and spring onion which made me want to put a bib on and suck every last ounce of flavour from every bit of shell. But it's really all about the Beijing duck, which is proudly presented to you all wood-fired and honey-glazed before it is turned into pancakes, lettuce wraps and duck-crackling.

If you can, save room for the banana toffee fritters - we've got to allow ourselves some consolation for not having had a summer.

The Dove
With it's beautiful bookstore, the cute café-cum-Dutch bike shop down by the canal, and a smattering of quality restaurants, Broadway Market feels more like a little village - albeit a slightly yuppy-ish one - than an urban market in the heart of the Big Smoke. And come Saturday, this endearing slice of fauxburbia blossoms into a full bougie-communist paradise: stalls of vintage attire, organic fruit and veg, takeaway food from around the globe, including more cheese than you can shake a Frenchman at, and possibly the best damn mushroom sandwich on this fine Earth.

So when you're done with all the haggling, your arms laden with goodies, nothing is as welcome as a comfy, wood-panelled corner and a half pint of a tangy, refreshing Belgian beer. Trust me. And it's for exactly this that The Dove has long been famous.

Okay, so it might no longer have quite the army of European rarities that it once boasted (but then, such a range is rarely good for business - unless you're Uto in Borough, of course), and sure the smoking ban may have robbed the interior of some of its 'old world' atmosphere. But The Dove's crowd are a friendly lot, and the pubs brewed offerings are more than inspiring enough to keep you from leaving till a lot later than you ever intended. Paradise indeed.

Hours:
Mon-Fri 12pm-12am, Sat 12pm-1am
Place:
24 - 28 Broadway Market, E8 4QJ
Cost:
£10
