It's
been a disappointing week, and the Swiss are entirely to
blame. Yes, sod neutrality, they've ruined our apocalyptic
hopes with their dud atomic collision experiment which failed
to go pop, let alone end the world, and then continued to
irritate us by sending Federer out to beat our own angsty
Andy. So we say, get sexy with Lady Luck, get shuffley in
Shoreditch, and get wet with Boris. Yep, it's about as random
as it gets, but we guarantee nobody'll be dissatisfied.
This weekend's guide is brought to you in association with
the INVERTED.
As part of this year's London Design Festival and London
Fashion Week, Beyond the Valley have created two distinctly
twisted environments around the Carnaby area, showcasing
brand new fashion and design products in back-to-front and
front-to-back versions, many of which have been created
exclusively for the festival.

Shoreditch
Shuffle
Okay, so we haven't quite gotten over the mind-bogglingly
clever new iPod 'shake to shuffle' feature. However, in
the absence of such technological indulgence, you can re-create
in fleshy real-time, the fine combination of music, theatre,
art, fashion, film and vigorous hip-shaking over two-days
and 17 venues across Shoreditch. From Five O'Clock Heroes
and Kid Carpet to Man Like Me, quite frankly, I'm all shook
up.

Min
Jiang
I've been writing about pubs quite
a lot recently so I thought I'd readdress the
balance with a healthy dose of glamour.
Min Jiang is the posh new Chinese perched on
top of the Royal Garden Hotel, and with its
slick lacquered decor and impressive vistas
over Kensington Gardens, it's a real 'get dressed
up and enjoy the view' kinda restaurant. I'm
generally more a cosy banquette kinda girl but
this is show-offy food which requires a more
formal setting and slightly over-attentive service
- luckily, though, the food is so good you almost
don't notice the fussing.
It's all beautifully, delicately executed,
from the pretty, pastel-coloured dim sum to
the green bamboo tea, not to mention the lobster
with ginger and spring onion which made me want
to put a bib on and suck every last ounce of
flavour from every bit of shell. But it's really
all about the Beijing duck, which is proudly
presented to you all wood-fired and honey-glazed
before it is turned into pancakes, lettuce wraps
and duck-crackling.
If you can, save room for the banana toffee
fritters - we've got to allow ourselves some
consolation for not having had a summer.

The
Dove
With it's beautiful
bookstore, the cute café-cum-Dutch
bike shop down by the canal, and a smattering
of quality restaurants, Broadway Market feels
more like a little village - albeit a slightly
yuppy-ish one - than an urban market in the
heart of the Big Smoke. And come Saturday, this
endearing slice of fauxburbia blossoms into
a full bougie-communist paradise: stalls of
vintage attire, organic fruit and veg, takeaway
food from around the globe, including more cheese
than you can shake a Frenchman at, and possibly
the best damn mushroom sandwich on this fine
Earth.
So when you're done with all the haggling,
your arms laden with goodies, nothing is as
welcome as a comfy, wood-panelled corner and
a half pint of a tangy, refreshing Belgian beer.
Trust me. And it's for exactly this that The
Dove has long been famous.
Okay, so it might no longer have quite the
army of European rarities that it once boasted
(but then, such a range is rarely good for business
- unless you're Uto in Borough, of course),
and sure the smoking ban may have robbed the
interior of some of its 'old world' atmosphere.
But The Dove's crowd are a friendly lot, and
the pubs brewed offerings are more than inspiring
enough to keep you from leaving till a lot later
than you ever intended. Paradise indeed.
