Weekend Guide

It may be London Fashion Week (also known variously as 'Free', 'Blag', and 'No Rest For The Wicked' Week), but a man's still gotta weekend when a man's gotta weekend. That means you need to drop that mediocre LFW goody-bag, put away your "I'm fabulous and don't deserve to be in this queue, dammit" look, and get out there and have some fun. Transsexuals, design, cabaret, and lashings of cheese? What more can you want? This, after all, the ultimate city fashionista's hangover weekend, so revel in the return to reality.

FRI AMANDA LEPORE SAT HIP HIP SUN FESTIVAL OF FOOD

FRIDAY

NightlifeCircus
There are few fake breasts that can generate quite the same response as those of the infamous queen of botox, the legendary siren of the surgeon's steel. Jordan? Jodie? Pammie? These poor little girls have nothing on the one and only Amanda Lepore, aka 'The #1 Transsexual in the World', who's making a very special appearance at Circus this week, to perform some brand new numbers. And probably get naked. Very naked.

Time:
10pm-3:30am
Place:
Soho Revue Bar, 11 Walkers Ct, W1F 0ED
Cost:
£10
Info:

MusicLondon Airwaves Festival
No, not a leading brand of menthol-infused chewing gum, useful for concealing those cheeky lunchtime liquid lunches, but another one of those Shoreditch-wide, multi-venue, weekend-bashing music extravaganzas, this time apparently in association with Iceland's famous (?) music fest. With the Young Knives at Vibe, Trailertrash demolishing the Hewitt St Car Park, and, our personal favourite, the Kitsune mash-up at 93 Feet East, including The Teenagers, Cazals, and Digitalism.

Time:
7pm-2am
Place:
Throughout Shoreditch. See website for details.
Cost:
£20 adv.
Info:

SATURDAY

artTiger Translate
When old Rudyard said 'East is East and West is West, and never the twain shall meet', he obviously hadn't envisaged this artistic fusion showdown. Watch as emerging Far Eastern artists, including Bandral Bold, Udisha Kumar, and Mee Wong team up with Brit counterparts (EINE, Pure Evil, High Calorie and Monorex) to interpret the theme Voyage alongside international DJs and probably, a bit of beer. Sounds like a good blend to us.

Time:
8pm-late
Place:
Hearn St Car Park, 7-11 Hearn St, EC2A 3LS
Cost:
Free
Info:

NightlifeHip Hip
With its move from the distant lands of exotic Bethnal-upon-the-Green to the formidable territories of King's Cross, Whoopee's younger sibling, Hip Hip, is coming of age, and trading up the predictable small-size burlesque game for something with a little more meat. Tonight's DJs include Hitman Hearn and Ponystep's Madame, plus live musical ditties from The Dead Victorians, and Polly Cupcake as your boisterous hostess for this green-themed, Absinthe-fairy-infused re-launch special.

Time:
9pm-4am, show at 10pm
Place:
Apothecary, 3 Vale Royal, N7 9AP
Cost:
£15, £10 after midnight
Info:

SUNDAY

otherFestival of Food
Wrapping up a four-day riverside fest, it's time to take a deep breath, pop that Pret sandwich back on the shelf, and take a walk down to the Southbank for the enormous Festival of Food and Slow Food Market, where over 50 stalls and a slue of events will put a smile on your face. And your belly. See their website for more details of the weekend's activities.

Time:
12-9pm
Place:
Southbank Centre, Belvedere Rd, SE1 8XX
Cost:
Free
Info:

Other Tent London
It's official: Fashion Week is done. Finito. O-v-e-r. Finally I can return to schleppling around in sweatpants, and no one will bat an un-made eyelid. Now I've turned my aesthetically-fascist attention to objects that look gorgeous, instead. Perfect then, that Tent London, which wraps up today, has crammed the best of the world's design talent - from art, architecture, contemporary and vintage design - into the Truman Brewery for my casually dressed pleasure. Everything looks fabulous, so you don't have to. Thank God.

Time:
10am-5pm
Place:
Truman Brewery, Brick La, E1 6QL
Cost:
£10

EAT & DRINK

Benja
It's funny, there was a time, about five or six years ago, when everywhere you looked it was Thai fishcakes, Indonesian salads and lemongrass creme brulee - so much so that I longed for English staples like shepherd's pie and treacle tart.

Now that we can't move for Great British Classics I find myself craving something with a bit more of a kick, so I jumped at the chance to try some bonafide Thai cuisine prepared by Thailand's premiere foodie celeb Chef McDang at the 'Michelin-Bibbed' Benja in Soho.

McDang (who has nothing to do with Scotland but did live in Pimlico for ten years) has created a new menu, including things like crispy fried shrimp with spicy mango salsa and pan-seared snapper with mushroom and coconut sauce, all of which packs a punch and reminds you just how addictive the combination of chili, garlic and galangal can be.

While I ate he taught me the basic principles of Thai food and tried to interest me in a whiff from his secret phial of 'bug-juice'; extract of a flying insect that apparently has a floral bouquet. I politely declined.

Benja itself is smart and swishy and I'll probably be back soon as I'm not sure I'm going to be able to eat anything without liberal dousings of fish sauce and lime for quite a while.

Hours:
Mon-Sat 12-3pm & 6-11pm
Place:
17 Beak Street, W1F 9RW
Cost:
£45

OnOff Pick of the day

On|Off PICK OF THE DAY: BERNARD CHANDRAN

The combination of bold colours, highly elaborate construction techniques and unique silhouettes could have spelt disaster for a catwalk collection, but with the odd over the top piece Monsieur Chandran successfully negotiated the path between innovation and unwearable oddity. The very first curved strapless dress set the tone; it was carved in four panels to create a wonderful egg dress without being bulky or exaggerated.

Backstage

BACKSTAGE: AVSH ALOM GUR

Avshalom Gur's a busy boy; apart from his mainline show, he's also been designing the revamped Ossie Clark line, but that didn't stop him sending out a stellar show at ON/OFF, devoid of backstage hissy fits. Instead we found ribbon tie sandals, chair earrings and prints, and pretty, smiley models, with black lipstick. Ah, the paradoxical world of fashion.
