When
I was five I got a kitten for my birthday. The story
runs that I tried to flush it down the toilet that
very afternoon. Giving it a bath, apparently. I still
love birthdays. Even if no one does give me pets any
more. And the only thing better than a birthday. Is
a weekend full of both birthdays and celebrations
of every kind. I say make every birthday on a weekend.
Or better yet, every weekend a birthday. Who’s with
me? |

Moshi
Moshi Records' 10th Birthday
For any institution, managing a full decade of existence
- no matter how mediocre - is worth quite a back-slapping.
So when Moshi Moshi get to celebrate a whopping ten years
of pure, utter, and undeniable cool, it's no wonder they've
gone and booked out Matter and a stage line-up that's just
do damn, well, cool. Hot Chip, Kate Nash, Florence and the
Machine, Tilly and the Wall, The Mae Shi, and a Greco-Roman
Soundsytem of a DJ line-up to boot.

Manifesto
Marathon
Conceived by Hans Ulrich Obrist, this year's Manifesto Marathon
sees his curatorial genius put to good use in the final
weekend of the spectacular Frank Gehry Summer Pavillion.
Gilbert & George, Brian Eno, Yoko Ono, Terence Koh, Christian
Boltanski, Jonas Mekas, Tom McCarthy and Franz West are
amongst some of the leading figures from the worlds of art,
architecture, science, literature, philosophy, music, fashion
and film who will present their manifestos over a two-day
'futurological congress' in this park.

Late
Night Tales
Proving that their more than just a bunch of guitar twanging,
well, monkeys, Matt Helders (he's the one on the drums…
just in case, y'know) is celebrating the launch of his own
Late Night Tales mix album with this shindig at t'Tavern.
And, as though such animalistic multitasking wasn't reason
enough to drop in, he's being joined by fellow Late Night
Tale-tellers, Someone, Sean Brosnan, Ben Smith, and Santogold's
tour DJ, Martelo. |

Nozomi
Yeahhh, I know a ton of new restaurants
have just opened, but bear with me - I've been
away for the last couple of weeks getting married
and haven't had the chance to check them out.
And I went to Nozomi recently and it was decadent
and delicious.
Okay, so it's in Knightsbridge, most of the
clientele saunter in wearing too much cologne,
their shirt collars too high, heels higher,
and look like no one's told them we're on the
the verge of a financial crisis, but a little
denial can be healthy.
And, okay, so the waiters aren't the most attentive
in the world, but I like the feel of the place
in a perverse, eurotrashy, St Tropez kinda way.
There's a black marble bar, shiny wood, studded
leather chairs in the bar and pristine white
tablecloths in the dining room.
You'll find all the usual sashimi, nigiri,
tempura stuff but there are also some other
very well-executed, more imaginative dishes
like the miso and mint marinated lamb with eryngii
mushrooms or pan seared tuna with grilled shishito
peppers and miso vinaigrette, and a very good
sake menu.
There is also, as you may have predicted, a
dj, so if you're after a nice low-key night
out, this probably isn't the place for you.
But if you're in a 'throw your cares to the
wind and start wearing Versace' mood it is.
