One-Upmanship

Me, I love a good members-only establishment. Especially when said membership is of the notably blagged/otherwise-gratis variety. But what's with all the gimmicks? I mean, it's virtually rapiers at dawn out there lately.

Centre Point's Paramount, which officially opens tonight, has its stunning 31st-33rd floor views and a slick Tom Dixon interior (though I personally can't quite forgive or forget the urine-scented ground-floor exterior no matter how much champagne I drink). Hospital is still pushing its cutting-edge Creatives in Residence programme. And Bureau, which (re?)launches on Wednesday after an initial management/PR hiccup, has its card-swipe, well, everything.

You swipe to enter, you swipe to send the DJ your favourite tunes, and you swipe to create your bespoke cocktail menu based on the drinks and recipes you prefer.

Well, it saves having to keep repeating "I'll have another grapefruit margarita with a hint of agave served up with a salt and pepper half-rim, please barkeep. And keep the change." Especially when coherent conversation left the building a few rounds earlier.

Please send all membership donations to Addie Chinn, c/o Urban Junkies...

Membership at Bureau starts at £350
Bureau: 13 Kingly Ct, W1B 5PW • 020 7494 4386
