Weekend Guide

You just can't help feeling hopeful about the future now that Obama's safely installed - behind three inch thick bullet proof glass. In celebration, dine out at that old American tradition, the Supper Club, shoot Brixton in the most peaceful way possible, and drink copious amounts of liquor, perhaps even with the Holy Spirit. Or, if you're sticking to some good old British doom and gloom, pop along to Dr. Atomic and rest safe in the knowledge that it could still all go so horribly wrong. Yay UK.

This weekend's guide is brought to you in association with the ultimate masters of Kung Fu, the Shaolin Monks from the fabled temple in the foothills of the Song Shang mountain range in China's Henan province. Catch them breaking iron bars on their heads, smashing concrete blocks whilst lying on beds of nails, and of course, awe-inspiring martial arts, in their hit show, Wheel of Life at the Hackney Empire.

NIGTLIFEThe Paradise Show
If Paradise really were a club, I'd like to see the Holy Ghost shake it down to some live indie from Ed Larrikin's band The Pan I Am, God marvelling at the Mystery Jets' DJ set whilst slugging a 'Dark & Stormy' (watch out Noah), and Jesus getting inappropriately excited by Kitty Bang Bang's Burlesque show. And if all that conjecturing is sure to land me a place in hell, I'll go happily by way of Kensal Green.

Time:
8pm - 2am
Place:
Paradise by Way Of Kensal Green, 19 Kilburn La, W10 4AE

£3 after 10pm

FilmDoctor Atomic
Whilst the outlook across the pond may seem rosier than it has in a fair while, we're still kinda keen to keep America at a safe distance. But, in the name of progress of course, we're quite happy to steal their art. So bring on the future (of technology, that is) as Penny Woolcock makes her Met debut with John Adams' gripping story of Doctor Atomic and streams it live over to us here in Blighty for the BFI's genius cinematic operatic season.

Hopefully recovered from Time Out's 'On The Up' gig at the Barfly on Friday, the titular hirsute pair of record-spinning cuties returns to the Star of Bethnal Green to mess up yet another Sunday - in a very good way, natch. EAT

The Exhibition Rooms
Now that we're all (I hope) basking in the post-election glow, what we need is one of those slightly bohemian weekend hangouts that does good, hearty grub and is comfy rather than stuffy. A put-the-world-to-rights sort of place that's not full of naysayers and know-it-alls propping up the bar, like the local pub.

Crystal Palace, which has never exactly been a land of plenty when it comes to decent eating places, now has the perfect spot. The newly opened Exhibition Rooms, named after the 1851 Great Exhibition of London, may have a familiarly eclectic decor - mixing English, French and Moroccan antiques - plus a swanky 'cocktail lounge' downstairs and, of course, the ubiquitous terrace, but the thing that sets it apart from other Brit bistros is that the food is as high on style as it is on comfort.

Chef and co-owner David Massey has travelled extensively and evidently been influenced by Eastern flavours, so expect things like freshly picked crab with green papaya, mango, and coriander with Nam Jim dressing and twice cooked pork belly with Asian pear salad and a soy and ginger reduction, amongst more traditional British classics.

Finish off with a passion fruit and mango trifle and leave feeling ready to do your part in making the world a better place - at least until the morning. You can always go back for breakfast to get a top-up.
