Weekend Guide

You can feel it, can't you? That feeling of acceleration that builds near the end of the year. Hallowe'en is barely a memory, Guy Fawkes scarcely a shade, and already the Christmas lights are going up, the end of year blowouts being planned, the party-season already growing in intensity. So, before the mania hits, we've put together a bit of a mixed bag for you. Cerebral and silly; magical and messy. Just how we like it.

This weekend's guide is brought to you in association with Onedotzero: Adventures In Motion. Held throughout the weekend, it promises a packed schedule of arts, culture and entertainment, bringing together groundbreaking cinematic work, sensory installations, performances, discussions and social events. Click on the banners to see what innovative events they're getting up to over the coming days.

Well, the folks at Bar Rumba clearly don't give a fig about pollution. MusicLondon Jazz Festival
Jazz, to me, sounds like a gang of instruments with ADHD who are refusing to take their meds. So this year's London Jazz Festival promises to be a cross-rythmical riot of NHS proportions. Kicking off today, highlights include the 15-man Italian marching band's Funk Off at The Clore Ballroom, Femi Kuti's first studio album in five years, and Keith Tippett in the Purcell Room.

TheatreAbout Silence
In the same vein as White Noise trying to freak us out about the detrimental effects of modern technology on our most intimate human relationships, this three man show mediates on life, love and obsession via a video projector, a laptop, and other-worldly music. Personally, the only pain I get from technology is in my thumb from all the texting, but hey, what a small price to pay for avoiding that awkward break up.

Time:
9pm
Place:
BAC, Lavender Hill, SW11 5TN
Cost:
£10

SATURDAY

MusicNevereverland
Whilst it doesn't claim to grant eternal youth or glittery fairies as your celestial guides, this night of electro, indie and leftfield electronica is as close to musical paradise as it gets. Starring The Presets, Shy Child, Ladyhawke, and The Voguettes just for starters, this year Henry Smithson's Eine Kleine Nacht Music project with Future Cinema promises to stun visitors with it's immersive, tactile and bewitching world - with enough room to give Wendy a good grope in the dark. If that's your thing.

Time:
10pm-5am
Place:
The Coronet Theatre, 26-28 New Kent Rd, SE1 6TJ
Cost:
£18

NightlifemProhibition
Seems everything is moving out East. First bowling and now, abandoning Rathbone Place, Prohibition is setting up shop in a secret East End warehouse for bootlegged alcohol, roulette tables, and flamboyant floorshows, as well as David 'The Nouveau Niven' Piper on gramophone duty. But you'll have to dress up extra hard to stand out here: headbands and drop waists are practically boring in this neighbourhood.

Time:
Entry between 8-10pm, Party till 2am
Place:
40 Liverpool St, EC2M 7QN
Cost:
£15 adv.

MusicSlipped Disco Vs Hell Yeah
Tonight, NME radio magic man Ben Osbourne and DJ Sonny of Slipped Disco are seeing in the Italian imports of Hell Yeah Recordings with a funky-funky bang. Throwing in a dose of Mediterranean new-wave mayhem, Pirate Robot Midget are showing off their stupendous electro-rock talent, whilst master mixers Blatta & Inesha are joined by the Norwegian Casio Kids of Moshi Moshi and their big ol' blend of carnival-inspired tomfoolery. Slipped Disco? Slipped disc more like.

Time:
7am-2.30am
Place:
Last Days of Decadence, 145 Shoreditch High St, E1 6JE
Cost:
£5 after 8pm

SUNDAY

artGoodbye Great Newport Street
Alas, she's had a fair good innings. Having housed a multitude of exhibitions, a cacophony of prints, a fabulously rich array of books since lovingly opened her doors back in January 1971, The Photographer's Gallery is now upping its discreet sticks for a roomier haunt in Soho. To celebrate/commemorate the move, pop in for afternoon tea, sign their memory-book and watch Silvia Ziranek's apt 'Wall Walk' performance, all whilst holding back the tears.

Time:
4pm-6pm
Place:
The Photographer's Gallery, 5 & 8 Great Newport St, WC2H 7HY

musicValerie Tryon Chopin recital
It's funny who we choose to revere; yes Chopin may be one of the great musical genius' of our time, but does a man who wore a beard on only one side of his face really deserve our adoration? Well, obviously. We say, in appreciation of such lunacy, don a half beard and head down to the concert marking 160 years since his last public appearance. The way you'll be looking, it might be yours too.

St Paul's Church, Covent Garden, WC2E 9ED

Arguably the best thing to come out of Salford since, er, sliced Hovis, Mike Leigh wrote and directed a variety of tele-cinematic gems from Abigail's Party to Vera Drake. You also get to participate in a Q&A with biographer Amy Raphael after a screening of his seminal All or Nothing.

EAT & DRINK

The Pantechnicon Rooms
Sister to the Thomas Cubitt, this equally posh pub (or 'bar and restaurant' as they like to call themselves now) is so svelte, in an olde English country drawing room way, you half expect Mr Darcy to glide in any minute.

Nestled on a corner of Motcomb Street, which seems to have undergone a much-needed reinvention with a lot more buzzy little shops and cafes, the ground floor of the place is more relaxed with an impressively elegant bar and first-come-first-serve tables where you can gulp down six Helford River natives, Pantechnicon fish fingers, quail egg and beans or a steak sandwich with your bottle of Claret.

While upstairs in the slightly more grown-up dining room you can recline in studded leather chairs next to a crackling log fire and choose from seared venison or whole Dover sole with rice pudding for afters.

Altogether, it's a frightfully nice place and a good bet to take the parents or in-laws to for the Sunday roast - a steal from £14.95 for organic pork loin, truffled mash and other luxey trimmings.

Place:
10 Motcomb Street, SW1X 8LA

Favela Chic
Once a mere den of delicious debauchery, I popped along to Favela Chic to sample the recently revamped menu from their new head chef (poached from the nearby Shoreditch House, apparently). And you know what? They have me convinced.

To be fair, it's hardly Michelin Star. But the dishes were fresh and bright, the flavours successfully "weird" (quoth the new chef). The service - marking a change for the venue - was attentive, yet without denting the atmosphere. Our sea bass was gorgeous, in its coconut and chilli sauce; the salads sharp and refreshing on a grumpy autumn evening; the chocolate fondant seductively gooey, the fruit salad with guarana nectar a delight of gastronomic escapism; and the tiny cinnamon and monkey nut treats with our coffee made a perfect conclusion to the meal.

You have to go for the cloth-trading extravaganza that is Swap-A-Rama. Definitely make an effort to catch a few of their seminal nights of Brazilian hip-swaying. Absolutely make at least one caipirinha-driven night, Favela style. And now, I'm pleased to say, it is positively worth heading there for a more civilized bite and a cocktail. Before things get down and dirty, of course.
