Ah,
Valentine's
Day. Little birds tweeting away in the trees; golden, dappled
sunlight dancing along the street; lovers walking side by side,
hand in hand, smiling, kissing, being unreservedly joyous and
caring towards one another. Or should that be Valentine's
Day: a torrid affair of consumerism, cheap chocolate, wilting
roses and trite, half-felt clichés. Whichever way you swing
(so to speak), we've got your lovestruck backs, so have no fear.
This weekend's guide is brought to you in association with Net-a-Porter.
And with London Fashion Week a mere stone's throw away, why not
spring straight into the new season in style. Whether it's the
dark arts of Givenchy, some uptown Oscar De La Renta, or a little
Marc Jacobs arm candy that you're craving, the folks at Net-a-Porter
have all the answers for the coming Spring.

Mr Jones Watches
Forget plucking the petals off some poor flower
this weekend, with this more timely Mr Jones approach
to the ancient love game. With a kinetic mechanism
to flick the brooch face from He Loves Me to He
Loves Me Not, all you have to do is think of the
object of your desire, pull the winding crown,
and leave the rest up to fate. Or mechanics, depending
on the outcome.

Work It Players Lounge
Yes, there are still a few not-entirely-awful restaurants
out there that aren't booked up. And, yes, you could stay
at home and mope about your lack of partner (or, indeed,
'celebrate' with the one you do have). Or you could pop
down to the ICA, for this hula-hooping, '90s hip-hop-loving,
typically multimedia, all singing and dancing (literally)
Work It special at the ICA. There are limited tickets left
for the door, so do try to get there early for this one.

Trite teddy-bear cards and overpriced (and
distinctly uninspired) restaurant reservations
are all very well. A glass of cheap, last
minute bubbly and spray-painted, Chanel-red
roses are surely better than a slap in the
face (whether proverbial or literal). But
there are those rare and wonderful occasions
when only an e-card will do.

Sam Roddick on Seduction
So you're lying in bed, alone, on the morning after what
is purported to be the sexiest night of the year. Either
you're still single and have failed in your 'screw' Valentines
mission, or your better half has left in disgust at your
poor seduction techniques. Fear not, for Coco De Mer founder,
Sam Roddick, is here to preach the good news about sex,
in a sermon so salacious it'll have even the sinners blushing
in the pews.

Get Frocked
Survived the horrors of the annual V-Day? Well,
don't you deserve a little reward? Favourite amongst
celebrities, the Frock Me Vintage Fashion Fair
is back, pushing all its usual retro wares in
Chelsea's Town Hall between 11am and 5:30pm. Make
sure to stop by the pre-war inspired tea room
for something steamy and creamy on your way out.
Oh alright, we took that a little too far...

Kettner's
It wasn't a huge surprise that Kettner's
got such a flogging when it reopened at the end of
last year replete with Ilse Crawford interior and
poncey new menu.
A Soho institution that started life in 1867 as a
French restaurant frequented by Oscar Wilde and Agatha
Christie, the place enjoyed more recent years as a
faded but fun, upmarket pizzeria (it's owned by Pizza
Express) where you could enjoy a few glasses of bubbly
at the champagne bar before your Fiorentina. But the
new-look Kettners, critics-in-mourning wailed, was
all style and no substance and the food just didn't
cut the mustard.
Thankfully though, the place seems to have brushed
up its act on the food front and, I have to say, I
kind of like the French-tearoom-meets-scrubbed-brasserie
decor, and fully approve that they've kept the pianist.
Try the diver scallops - which are sweet, earthy
(in a marine-like way) and perfectly turned out on
parsley-flecked champagne risotto - or go just to
visit the Pudding Bar, whether to pore romantically
over Poires Belle Helene with your beloved or drown
your single sorrows in a chocolate pot with warm madeleines.
