Weekend Guide

Take two unrelenting carnivals and cream together with a large dollop of Madonna (any era will do). Beat in 500 grams of East London carnage, one upcoming dance extravaganza and a large shot of gothic cabaret, and bake for fifteen minutes 'till warm and gooey. Sprinkle with a flurry of art fairs and exhibitions, and garnish with the newest, slickest bike shop in town. Et voila: London, this weekend. Bon appetit!

This weekend's guide is brought to you in association with Alessi, who prove that functional kitchenware doesn't have to be boring. Variously bright and colourful or chic and sleek, their innovative take on interior design has been charming customers since 1921, and has us shouting Viva Italia!

FRIDAY

nightlifeTelling Tales (Too Terrible To Tell)
What's a Friday night without a bit of gothic cabaret then? Think Tim Burton as shot through a lens of delirious theatricality: a splash of garish Technicolor, a snippet of silent cinema, and a dash of Vaudevillian villainy all wrapped lovingly around a twisted spine of subversive fairytale. Starring the terrible twosome, Pustra and Vile-een, ably supported by Tom Baker, Raven Kaliana, and the inimitable Scottee, expect delightful nightmares and warped hilarity.

Time:
8pm, doors at 6:15pm
Place:
Volupté, 9 Norwich Street, EC4A 1EJ
Cost:
£5 standing, £10 seated
Info:

musicRecession Session
Financial success by day, hardcore party animal by night. Sound familiar? But let me guess: the current economic stress surrounding the former is beginning to severely impinge on the latter, yes? Or maybe you're more of a now-even-less-well-paid creative. Or even-more-broke graduate. Or perhaps you're still flying high, and would quite like to stay that way. Well, luckily, Slipped Disco and Goldirocks are in utter agreement - proving here that Friday night naughtiness need not cost the Earth.

Time:
9pm-2am
Place:
Bar Music Hall, 134 Curtain Road, EC2A 3AR
Cost:
Free

Eonnagata
Bringing together dancer, Silvie Guillem, theatrical wünderkind, Robert Lepage, choreographer, Russell Maliphant, and fashion designer, Alexander McQueen, Eonnagata is their first performative collaboration. And it's based on the true story of Charles de Beaumont - diplomat, writer and swordsman, who was also the first spy to dress as a lady to enact a disguise. How very dare he!

SATURDAY

This week's ORIGINAL pick: Simply Madonna
Are you more of a fan of the pointy-bustier or the ripped denim? Did the sleek, raven-haired desert dweller do it for you, or was it the baby blue Stetson? Evita or children's book writer? Marilyn Monroe-esque beauty, or 50 year old in a thong? Love her or loathe her, Madonna remains one of the most iconic women of our generation. And this is the largest private collection of her outfits under one roof.

Time:
9:30pm-2:30am
Place:
Old Truman Brewery, Corbet Place, E1 6NH
Cost:
£9.50

nightlifeCarnival
With a carnival as unrelenting and all-consuming as Notting Hill's, it's hard sometimes to remember that anyone else does them. Take the Brazilian one, for example. At least as far as glitter-wearing half-nudity goes, they don't get any better. And whilst we're not going to promise too much tanned flesh, this huge party at Guanabara, running 'till Wednesday, is as close as you're going to get over here. To Brazilian Carnival, that is. Not the nudity. Although you never know.

Time:
5pm-4am
Place:
Guanabara, Parker Street, WC2B 5PW
Cost:
£10

SUNDAY

otherFastnacht
Maybe not the most local listing, but since we're feeling the carnival vibe at the moment, we just can't help ourselves. Well, you never know: you might be in Germany for the weekend - and it's hardly that far away. Besides, who doesn't love a full-on six-day carnival? Big days are Thursday (19th) and Monday (23rd), but if you're anywhere in Southern Germany, look out for the Mardi barminess. Oh those crazy Europeans.

Time:
Feb 19-24
Place:
Southern Germany, but Cologne is where it's at
Cost:
£10

ArtInternational Art Fair
London might well be one of the most diverse cities in the world - as reflected in the enormous variety of art on offer at all of our numerous galleries. But the Big Smoke can also be a pretty sprawling nightmare to negotiate when you're craving a creative hit. So if you haven't been yet, today is your last chance to catch this cracking fair that brings all this diversity under one historic roof.

Time:
11am-6pm
Place:
RCA, Kensington Gore, SW7 2EU
Cost:
£5
Info:

SHOP

Shop 14
Once a mere mode of transport, bikes are now also the lifestyle accessory du jour. But rather than waxing on about the trend, if you're into colour coordinating your deep section rims with your skinny jeans, and maybe even riding on them, then this place is for you. Brand spanking new, the store is stunning, their multicoloured bikes and parts arranged like jewellery, and the chaps at the helm are some of the friendliest on the scene. Which always helps.

Shop 14 is now open, 10am-7pm: Old Truman Brewery, 91 Brick Lane, E1 6QL

EAT & DRINK

Daylesford Organic - Notting Hill
When I grow up I want to do my weekly shop and have leisurely weekend brunch at Daylesford.

It may seem a little extravagant to be thinking like this in times like these, but I fully believe, as I mentioned earlier this week, that a little of something you really covet goes a long way.

Daylesford has just opened its second proper foodie multiplex in London, karmically, on the site of the old Fresh & Wild on Westbourne Grove, where you can get all those inessential essentials like grapefruit scented toilet cleaner and manuka honey dark chocolate (actually, that is essential) and browse through other organic fancies to your heart's content.

There are two dining-in options: the Raw Bar in the basement - where you can not only get the uber-healthy vegetable juices and salads you'd expect, but also nibble on ceviche of wild sea bass with coriander and citrus dressing or steak tartare with watercress and quail's egg - and The Larder on the ground floor, where heartier fare like leg of lamb with roast fennel or surprisingly unhealthy-tasting (in a good way) beetroot risotto is on offer.

It may all be a bit too-good-to-be-true, and will no doubt become the all-day hangout for perfectly-groomed OCD (organic compulsive disorder) sufferers...

But if you can't beat them, live in denial too, I say.

Hours:
Mon-Sat 8am-11pm / Sun 10am-4pm
Place:
208-212 Westbourne Grove, W11 2RH
Cost:
£30
