Weekend Guide

Ah, Fashion Week. Another season, another week of constant shows, parties, afterparties, early morning reports, and incessantly alternating cups of coffee and stems of champagne. Sigh. But now that that's all over for another six months, we're feeling a distinct desire for something that, well, isn't fashion week. Which is where this weekend comes in. Art, performance, whisky, oh and a few parties. Well, you're not perfect either.

This weekend's guide is brought to by Tate Triennial, who have decided that a new modernity is emerging - in which increased communication, travel and migration are making our lives a chaotic journey in a teeming universe. So, if your head hasn't exploded already, why not go and explore this new altermodernity through art, film, and discussion.

FRIDAY

otherWhisky Live Gala
As Robert Burns put it: "Here's a bottle and an honest friend! What wad ye wish for mair, man?" Or, in the equally eloquent words of Ron Burgundy, "I love scotch. Scotchy, scotch, scotch. Here it goes down, down into my belly." And with masterclasses, tastings, and of course a dram or three for friendly consumption, this two day whisky love-in sounds like heaven - with tonight's evening gala clearly the peaty icing on the Scotch cake.

Time:
5-10pm, daily sessions 11am-5pm
Place:
Hurlingham Club, Ranelagh Gardens, SW6 3PR
Cost:
£55 (or £28 for Saturday's day ticket)

nightlifeJonny Woo: Remix
The latest show from Mister Woo continues his inimitable foray into the world of rap and rhymes with a new single, 'FAGGOT', and remixes of his spoken word. After the fabulous fashion palooza that was 'The House of Blue Eyes Show' this LFW, the brainchild of one 'Johnny Blue Eyes', we'll catch you down at the Bistro, if you're not quite ready to settle back down to normal Joes (and Jonnys) just yet…

Time:
8pm
Place:
Bistrotheque, 23-27 Wadeson Street, E2 9DR
Cost:
£12 on the door.

TONIGHT

WineChap
Our very own Wine Chap, Tom Harrow, has collaborated with Mumford Fine Art to revive the lost tradition of London's cultural salons. Thursday Feb 26, 6:30-9pm , Free but a tenner would be nice. Guestlist only. RSVP to Tom (subject Wine, Weird & Wonderful), or 07870 384 490.

SATURDAY

This week's ORIGINAL pick: The Rain Emperor
Even without the original rumoured plan of having it pour with rain indoors (can't think why that was canned, can you Mr Health & Safety?), this stirring installation is still an absolute must. Taking as its starting point the late composer Robert Jacob's fascination with rain, this site-specific production reinterprets his various scores into vast multisensory performances by the likes of The Elysian Quartet, Aste Amundsen, and the inimitable Scottee.

Time:
8pm
Place:
Village Underground, 54 Holywell Lane, EC2A 3PQ
Cost:
£15

nightlifeProhibition
It feels kind of right to be hiding decadence at the moment, sneaking expensive purchases out of shops in brown paper bags and hiding bottles of the good stuff on the back shelf. So throw in a little Charleston, and some gramophone DJs and flapper girls into the mix, and you've got yourself a nice little illegal shindig, 1920s style. See, recession doesn't have to mean literally depression.

Time:
8pm
Place:
It's a secret!
Cost:
£15

SEE

Doctor Atomic
There's only going to be 9 performances of this explosive (pardon the pun), co-production between the ENO and New York's Metropolitan. So book now for John Adam's exploration of what it's like to be J Robert Oppenheimer, the man who invented the atomic bomb, and the moral dilemmas behind being "the destroyer of worlds'. Wish we had as cool (if slightly less apocalyptic) a pseudonym.

Info:
25th Feb - 20th March. Tickets from £16

SUNDAY

ArtKinetica Art Fair
Tired of canvases that do sweet f.a., expecting you to do all the work for them? Of sculptures that just sit there like a bag of dead goldfish? Maybe you want something more, I don't know, active for your art buck. And besides, what's a weekend without a few pole-dancing robots, some man-eating installations, and a little subliminal mind control? The National Portrait Gallery will never seem half as interesting again...

Time:
11am-10pm
Place:
P3, 35 Marylebone Road, NW1 5LS
Cost:
£5, or £20 for the weekend
Info:

musicBlogger's Delight
You've got to envy the Blogger's Delight boys, haven't you. I mean, a full two months for post-NYE recovery? Jeez. Sure, we could do with a break after all our LFW shenanigans. And were we to just, you know, not turn up to anything till, say, April, there could be worse ways to start our "recovery process" than this - the first Sunday session of the year with Casper C, Skull Juice, and all their mischievous kith.

Time:
3-11pm
Place:
Lock Tavern, 35 Chalk Farm Road, NW1 8AJ
Cost:
Free

EAT & DRINK

Brady's
It's such a nice feeling when you stumble across somewhere by chance. A restaurant that isn't hyped to the max, or the new hot place to go. Just a good, tried and tested old favourite.

Brady's has been tucked away on Old York Road for 18 years serving up some of the best fish and chips in London and doing a roaring trade so I'm very glad I've finally caught up and discovered the place.

They've recently given the restaurant a lick of paint so it's extra welcoming, and was stuffed to the gills (sorry) the night we went which I'm guessing isn't unusual.

Their herb-crusted, grilled haddock was flaky perfection, their dark-golden chips are easily in my top three and I guarded the tray of five different herbie mayonnaises they brought to our table like a dog with a bone (or a cat with a fish). I'm already salivating over the idea of trying the battered plaice or cod next time - although the choice is wide, including things like potted shrimps and crab cakes, so it could be a hard one - and I've heard the traditional English puds they serve are legendary.

Long live the quality chippy and thank heavens it's nearly Friday.
