Weekend Guide

It seems that with the departure of fashion week, we've been knocked into something of a post-event stupour, involving brownies, fried macbooks and copious amounts of tequila. Yep, Casa UJ is on top form.

So to shake us back into action, we're planning a weekend at the Circus,
followed by some entrancing dancing Oscar Wilde style, and a bit of a jaunt round the East End. We may have (temporarily) lost our souls, but damn if we're going to lose our weekends too.

This weekend's guide is brought to you in association with Wintle Man, Jsen Wintle's eponymous label which has taken the capital by storm with it's couture-like, luxury menswear and precise tailoring. And now you can own a true piece of design too, as the End of Season Sample Sale kicks off this weekend with 75% off.

FRI CIRCUS • SAT SALOME • SUN LONDON WORD FESTIVAL

FRIDAY

This week's ORIGINAL pick: Circus Goes Ab Fab
Proving that they're more than happy to laugh at themselves (which is handy for a night packed with drag glam, door wh*res, and performance art), tonight's Circus goes all 'Ab Fab' for Comic Relief. If you haven't caught the photos of Jodie in full Eddie and Patsy mode, then get on it. And with a film crew down for the night, as the Harshlette puts it herself: "dress the f*ck up - you're going to be on the telly!"

Time:
9:30pm-2:30am
Place:
Last Days of Decadence, 145 Shoreditch High Street, E1 6JE
Cost:
£8, £5 before 11pm

nightlifeWestbury 2nd Birthday
You might be forgiven for thinking that all the cool, quirky nights are out East. But for the last two years, The Westbury's been pulling in a bunch of surprisingly big names and filling their West London local with smashing soundtracks and a great vibe. Celebrating their big oh-two, they're calling in the New Young Pony Club and Mr Hudson's Tokyoyoyo tonight, and Frankmusik and Rob Da Bank tomorrow night. Stick that in your hipster pipe.

8pm-3am
Place:
The Westbury, 34 Kilburn High Road, NW6 5UA

SATURDAY

TheatreJust The Tonic
'The Tonic', in my household, generally meant a foul tasting German potion with, inexplicably, three nuns on the front of the bottle. It did not taste good. Neither did it make anyone feel closer to God. So to Hell with that. Get down to Nottingham's leading comedy night as it debuts at Leicester Square with Tim Vine, Josie Long, and Gary Delaney in the first of a new weekly late-night residency. Laughter is the best medicine, after all.

Time:
10pm
Place:
Leicester Square Theatre, 6 Leicester Place, WC2H 7BX
Cost:
£12.50

filmSalome
If I could get my father to do an 'enchanting dance' to smite any of my previous love interests, it would look something like the Hokey Kokey crossed with the Macarena. Not terribly frightening. So let's leave the dancing to that seductress of the New Testament, Salome, and the smiting to her step-daddy in this 1923 black and white Oscar Wilde adaptation. Starring lesbian icon Alla Nazimova, this classic flick comes with specially commissioned music by Bishi and an intro from burlesque beauty Immodesty Blaize.

Time:
5:30pm
Place:
NFT1, BFI Southbank, Belvedere Road, SE1 8XT
Cost:
£8

EAT & DRINK

Galvin Bistrot de Luxe
Eating at this still young but authoritative Baker Street institution makes you feel a bit like you're part of an exclusive club; like The Ivy without the pretense and rubber- necking.

Darkly panelled and firmly upholstered, it's a lesson in how a certain type of restaurant should look, the oval-shaped table 20 near the door being one of the most comfortable and best-placed.

The rich French-leaning food can sometimes make you feel like you're in danger of contracting gout but that's part of the charm. I have recently discovered a penchant for their signature roast veal brains but feel slightly like I should be wearing scratchy tweed and have hair sprouting out of my ears whilst I'm eating it. They're famous for other, equally delicious, lighter dishes too, like lasagna of Dorset crab and plaice meuniere with brown shrimps - they also do spiffingly good value set menu.

If you're just popping in for a drink the downstairs bar is one of the area's best-kept secrets, particularly on Sundays currently, as there's a programme of jazz evenings taking place, but book ahead to avoid disappointment.

I'm off to buy a polo neck and some looser fitting trousers.
