Weekend Guide

There's a certain craziness in the air at the moment. Perhaps it's the electricity of these first weeks of Spring; perhaps something the government are putting in the water to alleviate the pressures of fiscal Armageddon; perhaps a curious new breed of hayfever.

Either way, it's there - and it's not just us who's feeling it. Mad hatters? Massive electric cubes? Strip bowling? Russian Futurist opera in Kentish Town? Tell me that's not all just a little bonkers?

Thankfully, if it's all getting a bit much in this crazy ol' town. At least Mr and Mrs Smith have the solution. Check out their killer two-for-ones for some wallet-friendly luxury escapism, just for Urban Junkies subscribers.

FRI MAD HATTERS · SAT ETC · SUN SOWETO KINCH

FRIDAY

NightlifeMad Hatters
You could take the long route - the somnambulence, the temporally-burdened leporids, the scale-altering beverage, the decapitating cards, the translucent feline - just to get yourself to an audience with a be-hatted marvel. Or you can hop over to the V&A, who are enthusiastically flaunting their current hat fetish for this month's social must-see. None off that "off with her head" rubbish either.

Time:
6:30-10pm
Place:
V&A, Cromwell Road, SW7 2RL
Cost:
Free
Info:

This week's ORIGINAL pick:
Etienne de Crecy/Audio Bullys

"So what are you up to this weekend then?" "Me? Oh, I was planning on watching a three story electro-Rubik's Cube go nuts to EDC's bone-pulsing back catalogue." Forget club VJ's projecting weak stop-frame footage to satisfy the old visual cortex. This is going to be AV mahoosiveness. And if you fancy battling for a cab home at 6am, then Audio Bullys are hosting the club afterwards.

Time:
7-10pm for EDC, 11pm-6am for the club
Place:
Matter, The O2, Peninsula Square, SE10 ODY
Cost:
£15 adv for EDC / £8 adv for the club
Info:

COMPETITION

The Met Cristal Competition
You start with a sedate glass of vino, indulge in a few cocktails, start slamming the shots, and before you know it, you've gone all Diddy with the Cristal and have no cash left for a cab home. Lucky then, that The Metropolitan is offering a free night's stay for anybody who pre-orders a bottle of Louis Roederer Cristal 2002. And one lucky UJ reader can win the whole package for free.

SATURDAY

nightlifeBowl-A-Rama
"Bowling. Naked." That was all they really needed to say. Okay, so maybe not quite naked. "Taking off your clothes and putting someone else's on, whilst simultaneously dancing around like a loon and bowling at least a spare." That's right folks, Swap-A-Rama is throwing a cheeky strike-tastic special. Beats a pint in the pub, surely.

Time:
9pm-3am
Place:
Bloomsbury Bowling Lanes, Bedford Way, WC2H 9EU
Cost:
£8, £5 before 11pm
Info:

otherMatt Skinner
Fancy an afternoon sipping wine, the gastronomic hustle and bustle of Borough market whispering in the distance? Assuming you don't mind Matt Skinner, are happy with a New World focus, and are keen to expand your oeno-file, then this 'meet the expert' session is just the ticket. You can do the full wine tour first, just sip and slurp with Mr Skinner, or opt for the VIP spesh - but however you pour it, cheers!

Time:
12pm for VIP sessions, 3pm for regulars
Place:
Vinopolis, 1 Bank End, SE1 9BU
Cost:
£35-£99 adv.
Info:

SHOP

Whitestuff
The recession is, if nothing else, a bit retro. Us Brits like a stiff upper lip and Keep Calm and Carry On mentality; so we're loving White Stuff's authentic wartime style Ration Book. Packed with offers and treats from the likes of Mr&Mrs Smith, Elemis and Montezuma, it also includes helpful hints and illustrations on how to make do and mend; goldfish tennis and a teabag tan anybody? Well, we like our crunch with a little humour anyway.
Free with purchase at White Stuff stores from 25th March.

SATURDAY

artVictory Over the Sun
Whilst not quite oxymoronic, 'Kentish Town' and 'culture' might not be the most logical association to make. And yet, all weekend, NW5's increasingly intriguing Club Ponderosa is hosting an interpretive series of performances of Victory Over the Sun - a 1913 Russian Futurist opera, apparently, featuring a cast of over 40 performers and musicians from the New Factory of the Eccentric Actor. Whodathunk?

Time:
3pm
Place:
Club Ponderosa, 176 Prince of Wales Road, NW5 3PT
Cost:
Free, but an RSVP is advised

otherSoweto Kinch
If you've been missing the recent Soweto Kinch-programmed 'In the Mix' sessions at the Rich Mix, then let's hope you don't have a soft spot for cracking contemporary jazz and hip hop - because some of them have been rather brilliant. This weekend's session will in fact be proudly featuring none other than the acclaimed, multi-award-winning saxophonist and rapper, Soweto Kinch. Handy that. Well if you can't blow your own saxophone?

Time:
2-5pm
Place:
Rich Mix, 35 - 47 Bethnal Green Road,E1 6LA
Cost:
Free
Info:

EAT & DRINK

Trader Vic's
Forget going without socks, it's at this time of year, when the sun teases us with an impromptu performance of what we hope is to come, that I get cravings for a pina colada.

And there's nowhere in London that does kitsch cocktails quite as well as Trader Vic's. There's something that takes you straight back to the first 'exotic' holiday you went on as a kid when you walk into the place (admittedly whether it was Vegas or a themed restaurant in Blackpool), and, some may be interested to know, was the main inspiration behind Mahiki.

But there's nowhere quite like the original, with its 'Love Boat' style decor, Seventies tinged desert menu - where else can you get ice cream flambe with kumquat sauce - and, of course, its famously extensive cocktail list - from Mai Tai to Passion Punch, order a 'mini canoe' to share and grab a straw each.

But of course, ahem, this is supposed to be a restaurant review so I should probably report that the place has a pretty extensive food menu, featuring crab cakes with red pepper vinaigrette and Cantonese style steamed sea bass, and is now doing suckling pig on a Friday and a monthly changing special of three courses and a cocktail for £25.

So, not somewhere to take your seriously foodie friends perhaps but certainly good, retro fun.
