Pausing
halfway across Waterloo Bridge the other
day (en route, in fact, to a certain tequilatastic
screening), I was struck by just how
beautiful our city really is. It's understandably
easy to get blinkered by pincer of the
fiscally-anxious daily grind and booze-tinged
weekends. But take a (windswept) moment
on one of the more central bridges and
all those worries are blown away. |
 |
Relishing
in this aesthetic magnificence of the
Thames and its historic views (and rose-tinting
just enough of the choppy, chilly, grey
reality), the new High
Timber restaurant is perched right
on its bank. A stroll down (or stumble
up, if you're heading home) from St. Paul's
and bang opposite the Globe, it's the
brain-child (or, more likely, liver-and-stomach-child)
of vineyard owners Gary and Kathy Jordan
and Vivat Bacchus's Neleen Strauss. No
wonder, then, that it is also a carnivorous
oenophile's paradise.

And if the various loins of venison, rumps
of Herdwick lamb, pulled shoulders
of pork, and gargantuan slabs of
Cumbrian farm connoisseur, Andrew
Sharp's forty quid côtes de boeuf
don't exactly tickle your proverbial
fancy, then there's always the 40,000
strong wine cellar to keep you occupied.
