Life is a Smorgasbord |

You
know when you've done modern
British to death, Asian fusion feels
so 2005 and tapas doesn't quite hit the
spot? Well, I've decided that a flirtation
with Swedish food might be the way forward.
It's wholesome, tasty, and a little bit
naughty - a bit like the off-beat Swedes
themselves. |
|
The
place that most seems to sum up this is
Fika,
on Brick Lane, which has quietly been
gathering quite a following in the last
few months. A convivial hang out for enjoying
a 'fika' (Swedish for taking a break to
enjoy a drink and a snack), its waffles
are particularly popular, whether sweet
(apple sauce with cream) or savoury (reindeer
salami and cream cheese), but there are
also more substantial dishes like Billingsgate
grilled salmon, served on an oak-smoked
board - perfect with a cold glass of cider.
Then there's Deep
in Imperial Wharf, run by husband and
wife Christian & Kerstin Sandefeldt, showcasing
seafood from Lake Vanerne in Sweden; and
Madsen
in South Ken, which holds 'Swedish Tuesdays',
serving pan-fried herrings with spring
vegetables and other Scandi specials.
