The Art of Distraction |
The L-13 Light Industrial Workshop and Private Ladies and Gentlemen's Club for Art, Leisure and the Disruptive Betterment of Culture opens |

Trapped between the utterly ridiculous second home scandal that continues to dumbfound us and the more serious European parliamentary elections looming around the corner, we reckon the time is absolutely ripe for a little intellectual distraction. |
|
Take Steve "The Aquarium" Lowe's latest creation: The L-13 Light Industrial Workshop and Private Ladies and Gentlemen's Club for Art, Leisure and the Disruptive Betterment of Culture. Sure it's a bit of a mouthful, but when your founding members consist of such diverse and controversial artistic luminaries as former KLF-frontman James Cauty, the delightfully unorthodox poet/artist Billy Childish, and prolific experimental musician/filmmaker/painter Geraldine Swayne, they were never exactly going to call it 'The Space', now were they?

|
Part swish contemporary gallery, part subversive socio-political vision, part artists' studios and part members' club, L-13 may well have more parts than a British MP has free homes, but we have such short attention spans here at UJ that that's probably not such a terrible thing. L-13, that is. Politicians on the other hand…
