Book Worms
Multi-functional venue The Book Club launches.
The last time I attended a Book Club I was wearing a Brownie uniform and labouring under the delusion that I was Leader of the leprechauns, where handwritten diatribes on Little Women were rewarded with felt badges, and Owls hooted their praises in human tongue.
Back in the adult world we seem to be faring no better. If the Jane Austen Book Club is anything to go by, members seem to be in need of therapy they’re not getting elsewhere, conversation veers far from literary analogies and use of simile, and the attention is firmly focussed on what snacks have been brought.

Which should suit multi-purpose new venue, The Book Club, relatively well. Like an East End version of the West’s Hospital Club, it aims to be a laid-back meeting spot for creatives, offering office space starting at a tenner, snacks and free Wi-Fi during the day, and drinks, dancing and drama at night.
And, rather than an endless round of ‘make do and mend’ classes, here you’ll get everything from Jonny Woo in a leotard leading dance lessons, Death Drawing tuition on taxidermy, and self-made music, no matter how tone-deaf you are.
Now there’s some badges we’d be happy to earn.
