Weekend Guide

Fashion Week is over, The Design Festival ends this weekend, we lost Patrick Swayze, and you feel emotionally spent. So, either get out of town entirely with Mr and Mrs Smith, hook up some retail therapy with sample sales, rebel with bingo, bag art booty, and oh yeah, relax. And don’t forget to check out our LFW coverage - because nobody puts UJ in the corner. Though they didn’t exactly plant us front row either. We’re taking out Wintour with a watermelon next time.

They’ve chosen their three most popular destinations at this time of year – the UK, Paris, and Morocco – so you can take your pick between autumnal countryside, chic city break and late summer sunshine. UJ subscribers can join the luxury hotel specialists for half price and take advantage of this offer, so now there really is no excuse.

lightlifeUnderground Rebel Bingo
There’s something clandestinely fun about finding a dirty bingo hall behind the visage of a second–hand clothing store inside a shopping mall. Underground Rebel Bingo promises late night, dirty, noisy, hardcore bingo for people who like loud music, shouting, and need an outlet in which to indulge in their secret, shameful vice – the passion that dare not speak its name. Bingo. Prizes come from Kings of the useless novelty gifts, I Want One Of Those, and there’s the promise of top name DJs and a bar. The last tickets are available on the door – if you can find it.

theatre Love’s Labour Lost
Taking a vow of celibacy in exchange for academic enlightenment is rarely a good plan (as anyone who’s benefited from the British university system knows, you’re far more likely to ditch the books for the bootay). Life gets especially hard (ahem) when an entourage of sexy French maidens make their way into your Kingdom. Dominic Dromgoole’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s wittiest comedy is full of puns, wordplay and parody, as well as geriatric mooning, drug addiction, and a spot of ‘snake strangling’.

iconAlternative Village Fête
You’d think a village would be prerequisite for a ‘village fête’ – which is where we, in grand old London town, fall sadly short. Luckily, Home Live Art have come to the rescue, setting up an alternative event with everything from Ukelele jams and rock–a–hula games to participatory skipping and hula hooping. There’ll be stalls by guerrilla knit artists ‘I Knit London’, The Make Lounge, The Society of Wonders, and cupcakes, candyfloss and popcorn.

Time:
1pm – 7:30pm
Place:
National Theatre, South Bank, SE1 9PX
Cost:
Free

UJPatrick Swayze Double Bill
Losing Patrick Swayze and Keith Floyd in the same breath is almost viciously unfair. One made us swoon with lust, the other spent most of his time swooning on red. So, as an homage, The Roxy are putting on a Ghost and Dirty Dancing Double Bill, with plenty of food and cheap plonk on the side. There’ll be dancing, there’ll be crying, there’ll be erotic pot–making and a few watermelons. The time of our lives? We owe it all to you Patrick.

Time:
5pm/ 8pm
Place:
Roxy Bar and Screen,128-132 Borough High Street, SE1 1LB
Cost:
Free to members / £3

UJTurner and the Masters
Remember that old kids song, ‘Anything you can do, I can do better’? Turns out Turner never really grew out of it. This exhibition lays out the artist’s own copycat work next to the likes of old masters Canaletto, Rubens, Rembrandt and Titian, showing how his fierce competitiveness drove him to prove that he could be just as good, if not better, as his own idols. Kind of like Gladiators for art – and you get to play referee. No giant ear–bud battles though – that would just be childish.

Time:
10am - 5pm
Place:
Tate Britain, Millbank, SW1P 4RG
Cost:
£12.50

TODAY
Central Perk Pops Up in Soho

And now it’s time for The One In London, as the gang’s favourite hangout, Central Perk, prepares to take over a space in Soho. Props from the show including a bar of Mokolate and Rachel’s wedding dress will be on display, coffee will be served, and Gunther will be in situ for the opening night party.
