Weekend Guide
UJ Banner

2009 – a year of celebrity demise (Michael Jackson, Patrick Swayze, Tiger Woods), celebrations (Selfridges, Barbie, Woodstock), vampire fanciers, tweets galore, swine flu fears, and the official year of astronomy and, less impressively, natural fibres. You've joined us for the best and the worst dear readers, and as we wrap up for another year we leave you with a weekend of nudity, ice–swimming, Chinese acrobats, storytelling and of course, all of our heartiest thanks and wishes for a wonderful Christmas. We'll be back from the 12th January 2010 (the year of biodiversity, dontcha know) and a whole new decade of fun. Happy holidays!

iconStarkers
We’ve had the great pleasure of meeting our lovely subscribers on many a UJ occasion, and we’ve surmised that you’re a good–looking lot. So it follows that we’d like to see you naked, in Vauxhall, on a cold, dark night. Whilst it might sound questionable, the opportunity to flag this new nudist disco was too great to pass up – and fear not, it claims to be asexual and play comforting club classics, with a chill out room where you can mingle, and changing rooms so that bus journey over won’t be too embarrassing. We’ll be the ones with UJ tattooed on our butts. See you there?

Time: 10pm-4am
Place: Club Life, 64-65 Goding Street, SE11 5AW
Cost: £15

iconChinese State Circus
Sure nouveau circus is enticing, but what ever happened to that old world charm and quiet fascination from sitting ringside at a truly traditional big–top? If you’re up for some bendy people, you’ll enjoy The Chinese State Circus who have set up camp in Blackheath Common, with acts that are thousands of years old. Wonder at the contortionists, marvel at The Shaolin Wu–Shu Warriors, hail the return of The Monkey King, and question whether those girls are really of legal performing age. Oh wait 7nd this isn’t the Olympics. Phew.

Time: 7:30pm
Place: Blackheath Common, Shooters Hill Road, SE3 7AS
Cost: £10–£27
Info: Chinese State Circus

TODAY
Soda Stream – Back From the 80’s

As if our ‘Easy Bake’ oven didn’t cause us enough stress, now the 80’s stalwart of do–it–yourself imbibement is back; the SodaStream. Yes, dissatisfied with the cokes and sprites of this world, the SodaStream Pop-Up is in town selling customised machines, 80’s themed games, a dance floor with retro tunes, and a SodaStream mixologist creating bespoke mocktails. Try and sneak in some eggnog, we dare you – it would taste might fine carbonated up.

10am-6pm, 73 Parkway, Camden, NW1 8PP. Free.

TONIGHT
Animagica

Set to candlelight in Shoreditch Church, Icelandic Quartet Amiina will perform an ethereal accompaniment to animations by pioneering German filmmaker Lotte Reinifer as a beautiful counterpoint to the Christmas panto tradition. No slapstick dames, rather an exploration of the mystery and darkness behind original stories such as Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella, complimenting them with music played on a mixture of traditional and non–traditional instruments – including wine glasses and a delicately bowed saw.

7:30pm, Shoreditch Church, E1 6JN. £12.

UJ’s Top Ten of 2009

Thanks to the inimitable Audiosushi’s selection skills, we’ve been compiling the best new tracks throughout the year for your musical delectation. iconBrockwell Lido Midwinter Swim
There’s nothing like a bracing dip in the pool – especially when you have to take a pick axe to the ice before diving in. This year, Brockwell lido's Midwinter Swim is opening with a mass jump at midday, with badges of bravery available to the mad, bad and wetsuited individuals who plan on taking the plunge. The on–site café will be serving the obligatory mulled wine and mince pies to bring some colour back into those cheeks, for participants and spectators alike.

Time: 12pm-1pm
Place: Brockwell Lido, Brockwell Park, Dulwich Road, E9 5EN
Cost: Free

UJ Storytelling in Hyde Park
As a final hooray before the Arts Gallery is demolished in early 2010, Mike Ballard is literally embalming the space with art, covering floors, ceilings and walls with his own flamboyant take on art history. Transporting the viewer on a supersonic journey through a galaxy of hypermodern and prehistoric art, Storytelling in Hyde Park merges painted floors and walls and a baroque collage ceiling into one gargantuan installation, ultimately becoming one immersive artwork with you at its centre.

Time: 1 hour slots, 3pm-8pm
Place: Hyde Park, Cockpit, W2
Cost: £10

COMPETITION
Showtime Stocking Stuffer Special

Need a last minute gift? Or just don’t fancy spending the next few weeks sat around the family home discussing the dog’s liver failure and Uncle Bert’s stomach issues? Fear not, with a top selection of shows on offer, including La Clique, A Christmas Carol and Rope, and tickets up for grabs to all of them, UJ’s got you a theatre–themed get–out clause. Better than a fictional Santa Clause anyway.

SHOP WINDOWS
December 09

Proving that ‘tis not only the season for crass streets decorations and cut-throat discount nights, here are a few of our favourite shop windows doing their festive thing this month. So from a chilling demonstration of Beyond the Valley cool to some star–spangled LV, a Jonny Wooer–than–thou panto–rama at Liberty to a dose of classic family Christmas fun care of that old softie Ralph, here’s how the big wide world looks out there – assuming you can see anything past those hordes of last minuters…
