iconDesigner Warehouse Sale
What’s a weekend without a spot of bargain hunting, we ask you. But with all that foraging around for sample sales here, vintage bargains there, we know a post-work shop is pretty doomed from the outset. Or is it? From Wang to Westwood with a veritable army of new and established designers in between, today is the first public day for the new DWS sale (preview on the 4th and it runs till Sunday) so get in while the goods are hot. Which is to say “to trot” rather than “off the back of a truck.”

iconVan Doesburg & the International Avant Garde
Founded on their Neoplasticist philosophy and recognisable by that simple bright, arithmetically perfect style (think of Mondrian and you get the drift), the Dutch artistic movement De Stijl has barely slipped out of fashion in over 90 years, influencing everything from modern architecture to interior design. This major exhibition of Theo van Doesburg’s work – the first of its kind in the UK – present a refreshing, wonderful opportunity to dive into the mind of the man that got the iconic ball rolling.

Time

4th Feb - 16th May, Sun - Thur 10am - 6pm. Fri and Sat 10am till 10pm.

Place: Tate Modern, Bankside, SE1 9TG
Cost: £10

HAITI
Ctrl Alt Shift Auction

Here’s another fantastic event raising much-needed funds for Haiti (while simultaneously padding out your wardrobe/social life/etc.) as the chaps at Ctrl Alt Shift build on their existing £10k raised with a bit of an eBay charity auction. Only you see this is no ordinary auction. Bags from Mulberry, Dior and Chanel; tickets to Hot Chip, Lovebox and Dizzee Rascal; signed bits from JLS, Jay Z, Robbie Williams, Julian Casablancas; and more limited edition trainers, PSPs, etc. than you can throw a charity stick at. So get bidding now. And remember: since it’s all going to help Haiti, we’re asking you to push your budget that extra yard to get the prize…

iconWorld of Wine
It’s Saturday morning, which means you’ve got two whole days of play ahead. So do you a) go for a healthy mid-morning jog, maybe hit your local Waitrose and give the house a bit of a tidy? Or b) unravel the mysteries and delight of the World of Wine with a one-day workshop? Tough call, we know. Saturday papers versus two hours each on whites and reds covering at least 15 different bottles? Break out the duster or break in your varietal palette? Guess where we’ll be… Hic.

Time: 10:30am-4pm
Place: Artisan & Vine, 126 St. John's Hill, Clapham, SW11 1SL.
Cost: £85 incl. lunch

UJ Edward Scissorhands
Part of the BFI Johnny Depp month, this is Tim Burton at his best. The dark world of fairy-tail suburbia, magic and loss; the tousled, deep-eyed innocence of Depp; the adolescent empathy and xenophilia of Winona Ryder… It’s like a moving testament to their pre-mash-up years. Romantic, twisted and thoroughly enjoyable, if you miss tonight’s (Thursday’s) Cry Baby then this is the next best hit of early Johnny. Popcorn an absolute essential.

Time: 5:50pm
Place: BFI Southbank, Belvedere Rd, SE1 8XT
Cost: £9
Info: Edward Scissorhands

COMPETITION
Jerusalem Press Night Tickets + Party Passes

Not only was Jez Butterworth’s Jerusalem a massive sell-out at the Royal Court. And not only do we have a pair of tickets up for grabs to catch the press night (Wed Feb 10) for the new 12-week run at the Apollo. But how does a pair of money-canna-buy passes for the after party sound? If you and a guest fancy watching the brilliant Mark Rylance and Mackenzie Cook run riot in Butterworth’s eccentric rural masterpiece – and then hanging out with them afterwards – just pop us an email with your details to be entered into the draw.

The lucky winner will be notified on Monday, Feb 8.

Q & A
Ashlee Nelson

Just shy of her 19th birthday, the UK Olympic sprinter Ashlee Nelson is already a global icon and inspiration to many. She took a wee break from her rigorous training up at Lee Valley to talk to UJ about her goals, her music, her training regime; what drives her, what satisfies her, and what makes her wake up everyday and come back for more. Click through to see what the legend in-the-running (sorry) had to say.

UJCharles Leadbeater on Perspective
Aside from carrying a name with more inherent potential for intimidation than any man since Vlad the Impaler, the governmental advisor, charming author and wise social analyst Charles Leadbeater is also a man with an uncanny understanding of what the future might hold. In today’s Sunday Sermon at The School of Life, he advocates an about-face perspective to life which begins with the contemplation of a good death, moves through an appreciation of a ripe and satisfying old age and heads back home from there. And apparently it’s actually all rather optimistic. Which is strange, considering.

Time: 11:30am-12:45pm
Place: Conway Hall, 25 Red Lion Square, WC1
Cost: £12.50

UJRed Bull Music Academy - Gerd Jansen

As the Academy pushes on through until mid March, keep your eyes peeled for more parties and gigs including Ms Dynamite, Matmos, Goldie, Jazzie B and the Trojan Sound System at venues that stretch from Dalston Superstore to Paramount, the Roundhouse to the Royal Festival Hall. But tonight – tonight is where it all begins…

Time: 11pm
Place: Fabric, 77a Charterhouse St, EC1M 3HN
