At UJ headquarters it would be fair to say we have an ‘eclectic’ taste in music. What is to one the heavenly strains of electro-pop, is to another akin to having their eardrums scraped with a toothpick. Where foot tapping occurs to a dash of jazz here, weeping commences in the RnB fan–corner. But aside from the resulting game of extreme musical i–Pods, we’re a fairly lyrical bunch. And there’s always our Audio Sushi playlists to fall back on.
Which is why we’re super excited about the Red Bull Music Academy, a month long international music festival, symposium, and studio which touches down in Tooley Street with a stellar line up of events and workshops this week.
Since 1998 Red Bull Music Academy has set up camp in a different city each year combining a number of the most talented new musicians with established legends such as Sly and Robbie, Goldie and Public Enemy’s Chuck D to discuss, create and collaborate. Indeed, the list of forward thinking RBMA alumni, from Glasgow beatsmith and LuckyMe boss Hudson Mohawke, Soul Jazz dubstep champ Kalbata and Warp Records wunderkind Flying Lotus, not to mention the simply awe–inspiring Francesco Tristano, attests to the fertility of the project.
And it’s not only fun for those on the program. YOU also get a chance to experience the musical goodness flowing from the doors with a series of events (from Horse Meat Rollerdisco to a 3D Soundclash at the Royal Albert Hall), radio, parties and lectures lined-up throughout their residency. Find out when the newbie jamming session is scheduled to happen – our UJ insider says it’s a cracker of an evening, with new acts and undiscovered talent gathering in one room to make musical magic.
Get hold of a copy of the daily Red Bull Academy Paper, the Daily Note, launched especially for the London residency, with features on RBMA participants and events, listings and in depth pieces on the future of the music industry. With 80 thousand copies distributed around London per day, their website, radio station and events almost every day there’s practically no reason to miss out!
We can’t wait to see who we’ll be inter–office fighting over next. Or perhaps we’ll finally land on an artist that can satisfy the many whims of the UJ staffers. One can dream.
The Red Bull Music Academy runs until March 12.
