Weekend Guide

Someone who’s not you has emptied the lottery coffers, The Brits broadcast turned out to be a comedy of audio–visual errors, and the beginning of Lent means you can no longer take comfort in alcohol or food. One might ask, is there anything left to stick around for? So if you’re serious about an escape, check out our brand new Vancouver Guide for inspiration, and if you’re braving it out in Blighty (and avoiding the imminent Fashion Week mishmash) cheer yourselves with birthdays, bashes, (literally) and bedtime stories.

SHOP
Matthew Williamson Menswear

Oh boys, how the King of Boho teased you with his short–shrift menswear collection for H&M (which consequently, the women went and stole from under your uninitiated retail–rush noses). Well now he’s back with a proper collection for the boys, complete with jewel coloured sweaters, paisley print scarves and the odd beetle or two – get in there quick before the girls pre-stock their Summer wardrobes. Available at Harrods now.

iconThe Old Queen’s Head Fourth Birthday
With her boozer mentality and octogenarian-sounding moniker, you’d be forgiven for thinking The Old Queen’s Head was well into her pension days – but alas – she’s younger than your last partner, but twice as forgiving. Celebrating four grand years of gigs, guest DJs and acoustic Sunday soirees, tonight’s party features spin-time from Foals and Chew lips, Primary One, Warrior One and Tidy’Rhythm to knock the electro (pop)socks off revellers wishing her many happy returns.

THEATRE
Satyagraha

Gandhi’s search for truth is spectacularly brought to life in this musical masterpiece by Philip Glass, one of the world's greatest living composers. Satyagraha is a hauntingly beautiful musical meditation upon Mahatma Gandhi’s early years in South Africa and his spiritual progress towards a philosophy of non-violent protest. Instilled with breathtaking theatrical flair by Improbable’s award-winning director–designer partnership of Phelim McDermott and Julian Crouch, this production is a both a visual and musical delight. iconScrap Club
Ever feel like going a little rock’n’roll, heaving the old (non HD-ready) TV out of the window and taking a baseball club to your ex’s Playstation? For the angst–ridden, aggressive amongst you (man we love our subscribers), Scrap Club could be the answer – turn up at this ‘Destructivist’ meet and take hammer, crowbar and bat to as many household objects as you like. It’s loosely based on art, but largely centered around 150 people’s collective rage against the (washing) machine.

Place: Stamford Works, Gillett St, Dalston, N16 8JH
Cost: £10

UJYARNfest
It may come as a shock to the less-prolific readers/weavers amongst you that ‘spinning a yarn’ has little to do with sewing or knitting of any kind, and much more to do with a well-told, beautifully crafted story. Which is what this brand new festival is all about; telling tales. Sunday is the busiest with David Alric reading from his book Valley of the Ancients, Tom Wrigglesworth offering to read over a roast, the Paper Cinema making magic in The Lost World, and a spot of short cinematic Bedtime Stories for grown ups.

Time: 20th-24th Feb, various times.
Place: The Book Club EC2A 4RH, Queen of Hoxton EC2A 3JX
Cost: Free
Info: YARNfest
