Weekend Guide
UJ Banner

It’s the end of February folks, and we’ve collectively survived the January doldrums, Valentine’s Day, and the Cheryl–Ashley split currently rocking the nation’s already shoe–string–thin belief in true love. But, as it’s officially Spring (despite the Chaos Britain weather warnings), we’re planning on putting a little swing in your step with a line–up of naughty knickers, birthday celebrations aplenty, a very unusual art show and free brownies.

iconI love the 90s Second Birthday
If tomorrow’s Gutterslut bash sounds a little too hardcore for you, opt for tonight’s birthday celebrations instead. Perfect for common people and wannabes alike, get ready to jump around and zig–a–zig–ah to your heart’s content. There’ll be free sweets, 90s pin badges, a big balloon drop and super cheap Carlsbergs and vodka mixers for all those university reminiscences. Whether you end the night as you would have back in the day, is entirely up to you. Roll with it.

iconFriday Late
Lest we forget folks, we are living in a digital age (oye, put that iPad down and concentrate) so the V&A‘s latest show, Decode: Digital Design Sensations should be extra pertinent to all you googelisers out there. Tonight’s Late event includes sound tours, a self–portrait machine, a golden magical mirror which will reduce you to fairy dust, and of course, an SMS murder mystery game for the fiddly. Check out what hackers have been up to with Etch–a–Sketchs, and watch some early examples of computer–generated films that’ll make Avatar look like witchcraft.

Time 6:30pm – 10pm
Place: V&A, Cromwell Road, SW7 2RL
Cost: Free

FREEBIE
Starbucks Brownies

Sure you only buy free–range eggs, put out the recycling every week and switch off the TV at the mains – but do you ever really feel like you’re being rewarded for your hard eco–work? Starbucks are offering anyone who buys a Fairtrade coffee a free Fairtrade brownie this Friday as part of 2010’s Fairtrade Fortnight. And if you can wrap your tongue around all those Fairtrades, you deserve to fill your mouth with chocolatey goodness. What, we’re just doing our bit for the world.

iconGutterslut 2nd Birthday
Did you know that the country’s registrar has the right to refuse particularly ridiculous baby names? This and other wisdom we gleaned from Channel 4’s ‘One born every minute’, which kind of begs the question – how does a two year old deal with being called ‘Gutterslut’? Turns out quite well actually, as East London’s finest Gutter DJs Per QX, Elliott J Brown and Nic Fisher are joined by very special guests Larry Tee "(NYC), Sick Fantasy, and the legendary Princess Julia alongside the Jonny Woo for a very special birthday event this evening. We’re guessing she doesn’t want a dolly for her present though.

Time: 10pm – 7am
Place: Rhythm Factory, 16-18 Whitechapel Road, E1 1EW
Cost: £12
Info: Gutterslut 2nd Birthday

UJ The Rime of the Ancient Mariner
‘Water water everywhere, but not a drop to drink’ – no, not the state of your love life, but a line from Samuel Taylor Coleridge‘s famous poem being performed in all of its albatross–agony at this brand new production adapted from the 2009 outdoor performance at the Young Vic. Original music comes from the Southbank Artists in Residence, promising to put a new spin on the story of man’s journey through nature and the turbulence of his own self–consciousness. Expect plenty of sea monsters, haunted ships and one poor bird. And we’re not talking about your date.

Time: 2:30pm
Place: Southbank Centre, Belvedere Road, SE1 8XX
Cost: £8
Info: The Rime of the Ancient Mariner

UJAviary Art Installation
There’s nothing like a gentle Sunday stroll with the sounds of bird song to relax the mind for another tough work–week slog – so who the hell gave the chaffinches cymbals and why are the finches rocking out on electric guitars? French artist Céleste Boursier-Mougenot has created an amazing walk–through aviary equipped with 40 zebra–finches and a variety of musical instruments, resulting in a totally random interactive soundscape as the birds go about their business. Beats the pants of Snow White’s skills any day.

Time: 11am-8pm
Place: The Curve, Barbican, Silk Street, EC2Y 8DS
Cost: Free

UJThe Noisettes
If you managed to get through last year without ‘Go baby go baby go’ on your iPod, congratulations are in order. The Noisettes may have been a little quiet since their stints at T4 on the Beach and the like, but they’re back for this one-off performance at The Roundhouse. Get your ice lollys in hand, it’ll be just like the sweltering days of Summer all over again. Just don’t upset the rhythm.

Time: 7pm
Place: The Roundhouse, Chalk Farm Road, NW1 8EH
Cost: £16.35
Info: The Noisettes

CELEBRATE
Carnaby Street Turns 50

There’s not many people who can say they’ve met The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix and the Sex Pistols by the time they hit their golden years. But Carnaby can, and in celebration of their 50th birthday, they’re putting on a year’s worth of special events kicking off with the 3D timeline exhibition, marking the street’s memorable moments from 1960 to the present day.

26th February – April 2010, 38 Carnaby Street, W1.
Mon-Sat: 11am – 6pm, Sun: 12pm-6pm.
