Let's Step Outside
The new Meantime Brewery bar/restaurant, Courvoisier Pique-Nique & a Fancy Fair beneath the Thames lead this spring's secret London

Everyone loves a good secret. Whether it's a romantic tryst, an underground speakeasy, a Dickensian benefactor: what's not to love about the hidden and mysterious?

Maybe it's this that's helping communities like Secret London blossom so quickly — their users sharing their favourite secret(ish) venues and gems with one another. But with this sudden burst of (chilly) Spring sunshine in the air, we're thinking it's time to look even further beyond our usual stomping grounds…

Take Greenwich. "Where's that?" you ask. "Just left of Timbuktu?" (at which point it's only polite to apologise for any offense caused to residents of Greenwich. Or indeed Timbuktu.) More than merely a pleasant, riverside slice of just-about suburbia and a docking station for mash-ups at Matter, Greenwich is also host to the new Meantime Brewery bar/restaurant/microbrewery at the £6m Old Royal Naval College which opens this month.

"What's so unique about a brewery?" you jest. How's a batch of limited edition concoctions like the Mojito Pilsner they're brewing up for the launch? Now that nabbed your taste-buds by the short and proverbials.

Still a smidge too been-there-done-that? Then how's a Victorian Fancy Fair tucked beneath the River Thames in Isambard Kingdom Brunel's infamous, long-forgotten tunnel? Or an event/party space in Battersea Power Station? Or an indoor summer picnic replete with cartwheel masterclasses and wasp piñatas, hidden right behind Covent Garden?

Our point is this: It's a big ol' city out there — a city full of twists and turns, nooks and crannies full of secret treasures and hidden joys aplenty. And they're just waiting to be discovered.

Daily Note

Is Grime the first musical genre to exist almost entirely outside of the traditional confines of the music industry? A truly 21st century phenomenon, its stature seems to grow as its artists become less visible. This is thanks mainly to the viral nature of the internet rather than old fashioned means such as record sales or magazine column inches. In today's Daily Note, we take a look at how Grime has been fully rebooted by the web. Available in analogue newsprint from all good tube stations.
