Weekend Guide
UJ Banner

We’ve been waiting to say it, for fear of frightening it away like some kind of timid sea–anemone sucked back into its shell – but Spring truly does seem to be in the air! From the crocus’ popping out of the ground to the sunshine spooling through office windows, we’re feeling decidedly up for being out and about – starting with a trip to the Will Broome illustrated sea–container acting as Harvey Nichols’ mobile Hub. Celebrating the launch of their Fourth Floor, it’ll be full of vending machines shelling out goodies, the best of their lifestyle product wall (which we’re kind of in love with) and catering by Bistrotheque. It all kicks off today with a performance by Samantha Ronson and Daisy Dares You, before hitting four other locations in as many days. You thought you couldn’t buy that sunshiney, happy feeling? Well you were wrong – it also lives in a vending machine.

Free goody bags for UJ subscribers

We’re huge fans of Harvey Nichols’ Fourth Floor, especially for its amazing lifestyle wall stacked full of surprises. If you’re planning on hitting the space’s mobile Hub at one of its four locations this weekend, make a point of letting them know we sent you - the first ten UJ subscribers to arrive at each spot will get a goody bag filled with champagne, beauty treats and more. How’s that for incentive eh?

iconThe Gods Weep
What happens when you spend a lifetime building up your empire, only to see it destroyed by your own minions as you grow old and grumbly behind your desk? Admittedly, your ‘empire’ might only extend to the front door and include a cat and two goldfish but hey, it would still suck. This new production by the Royal Shakespeare Company sees Jeremy Irons in the lead role as Colm, whose company is at the centre of a clash between corporate greed and state security as the play leads you through three separate worlds with a rising body count.

Time 7:30pm
Place: Hampstead Theatre, Eton Avenue, NW3 3EX
Cost: £20

iconBestival: Time Machine
If you can’t wait for the Bestival machine to come rolling around this summer, get a little pre-party taster at their Time Machine event. With a 2010 theme of ‘The Fantastic’ for the main festival in September, tonight celebrates all the diverse subjects of their illustrious past – so get your fancy dress in order. There’ll also be Lost & Found nonsense, the inflatable church is back, live music from Alex Metric, Charli XCX, The Correspondents, and DJs Rob da Bank and Sombrero Sound System. Now we just need to decide - Cowboys and Indians, Under the Sea or Out of Space?

Time: 9pm-3am
Place: Koko, 1a Camden High Street, NW1 7JE

PLAYLIST
Playlist of the week – Trunk of Junk!

Sometimes there’s just no straight theme that neatly ties a collection of disparate things up with a bow – much as we’d like someone to gift wrap life – it ain’t happening. So this week’s playlist is a deliciously eclectic selection including something a little classical from the London Sinfonietta, Biggie’s classic hit Hypnotise to get you head–bopping at your desk, a little Beastie Boys action, a Chiddu Bang Gorillaz remix, and more. Variety is after all, the spice of life –and we like it extra tangy.

UJRankin’s Cheeky
Fancy a little sauce with your Sunday stroll? Check out Rankin’s Cheeky, the photographer’s new show (and incidentally, a lovely coffee table tome with foreword by none other than Hugh Hefner) which is being exhibited at the man’s very own gallery - Annroy. Featuring all of your favourite model players, including Kate Moss, Lily Cole and Helena Christensen in some state of undress, it’s a tongue-in-cheek exploration of the female form and sexuality.

Time: 12pm-6pm
Place: Annroy Gallery, 110-114 Grafton Road, NW5 4BA
Cost: Free

UJScrabble Sunday
Board games are a much maligned pastime of our digital age, no? Or something less existential sounding - but still, we miss a rousing round of Scrabble, the sneaky attempts to find the blank tiles, the imaginary two-letter words and someone getting in a huff because nobody believes that ‘zephlarg’ is a word. So come along to this Scrabble-a-thon (part of The London Word Festival) complete with dictionary keepers, cakes and biscuits for sustenance and an array of boards, from vintage spinny types to junior and giant varieties - so something to suit every intellect then.

Time: 4pm-10pm
Place: The Pembury Tavern, 90 Amhurst Road, E8 1JH
Cost: Free
