Weekend Guide
UJ Banner

It’s time to tap into your inner screaming child this weekend. There’s the playground at this month’s V&A Late, sheer mania at Bumpkin and unpredictably bonkers fun and games at Punk tonight. Should your inner sprog be a bit of a porker, how does a chocolate festival sound? And there’s even a macaroon-vibe over at Nike if your sweet-tooth takes a turn for the fashionable. But if you’d rather play grown-up, that’s covered too with everything from retail therapy to a piano with an identity crisis. If our WMC bits have talked you into a flight to MIA- be sure to check out Resident Advisor’s Dirty Dozen, and complete party list.  And if it was too last minute, we say click through on the below and check out the Delano. We love it here- might be time to book a little May holiday. Fun in the sun, Miami style. Enjoy!

iconThe Hendricks’ Lecture Season
Lectures, as The School of Life has proven with its impossible-to-book talks, are not always boring. Hendricks’ evening of education has landed on three topics for discourse tonight; swearing, bondage, and time travel. So, whether its foul language and four letter words, fetish photography and bound up babes, or a weird Italian community of ‘time-travellers’ and an underground temple that floats your boat, we guarantee there won’t be any dozing off in the corner this evening, though there might be a little wrist slapping with the ruler – if you’re lucky.

iconPlaygrounds
Forget boo-boos on the swing set and the childhood pain of trying to solo see-saw; tonight’s V&A Late has hooked up with Hide & Seek to bring the best of the playground to your sticky fingertips. There’ll be Victorian parlour games, a massive game of Pass the Parcel that’ll take more than one person to unwrap it, an illuminated balloon race where you’ll fight for pieces of string, puzzling treasure hunts and an Avatar machine to name a few. You’ll be dragging your heels when Mummy comes to take you home.

Time 6:30pm – 10pm
Place: V&A, Cromwell Road, SW7 2RL
Cost: Free

TONIGHT
Wacabonkers

Ok, so the title reads like something someone from Big Brother would say right after they’d declared they were ‘mad’, but hosted by Met Bar regular, Jonny Awsum, and eschewing the usual pen and paper questions for whiteboards and bizarre activity based point scoring (can you make a balloon animal?), this is a fun little evening’s entertainment, with prizes including bags of carrots and gourmet meals up for grabs. Plus there’s free entry to the nightclub afterwards - at which point that bag of carrots might come in mighty handy.

7pm. Punk, 14 Soho Street, W1D 3DN. Free www.wacabonkers.com

iconThe Fluid Piano
You know where you are with a piano. You know how all those neat little black and white keys look and, more importantly, how they sound. They are safe, predictable, certain. But just for a moment imagine a piano that turns its nose up at such petty conventions. Instead it touts bespoke tuning layouts, microtonally adjustable single notes, and thus the ability to be entirely flexible. Tonight sees the world premieres of several exclusive compositions for this ‘multi-cultural piano’, including inventor Geoff Smith himself and several leading guest composers. The revolution may not be televised – but it plays a mean round of chopsticks.

Time: 7:45pm
Place: Purcell Room, Southbank Centre, Belvedere Road, SE1 8XX
Cost: £15

UJ Medium Rare
There’s never been a better time to be in the dog house – no matter what your crimes – as the Maison du Chien (see what they did there?) goes into the final week of its pop-up members club residency at Bumpkin. Taking over the attic space, £20 gets you and three friends into the snug for hearty comfort food, a cracking cocktail happy hour between 6 and 8pm, and a night of Modern Variety ranging from Ursula Martinez’ comic striptease (last seen at La Clique) to Bendy Ladies, Men in Coats and even Scottee. Your ‘membership’ lasts until 1st April, so if you like what you see you’ve got a carte blanche to get in again and again – just keep the leash loose.

Time: 6pm-1am
Place: Bumpkin, 209 Westbourne Park Road, W11 1EA
Cost: £20
Info: Medium Rare

SHOP
Nike Air Royalty Macaroons

We kind of thought Nike might have cutesied themselves out when they collaborated on the Liberty ditsy-print dunks, until we clapped eyes on these French fancies. Taking their inspiration from those pastry perfect, powder pastel confections (macaroons, in case we lost you there), this limited edition line of thermo-moulded trainers come in berry, pistachio and lemon flavours, dropping in at various times over the next few weeks. Delicious.

UJEnchanted Palace
Whilst some of us are still waiting for our Prince to come, others can hot foot it to Kensington Palace’s new exhibition and find him for themselves. Various designers have created installations in its state apartments, taking inspiration from a line-up of princesses, transforming the royal residence into a living fairy tale. Vivienne Westwood, William Tempest, Stephen Jones and Boudicca have all taken part, with interactive theatre, storytelling, soundscapes, film projections and clues scattered throughout making this a Disney-esque outing for even the most cynical of souls.

Time: 10am-6pm
Place: Kensington Palace, Kensington Gardens, W8 4PX
Cost: £12.50

UJChocolate Festival
With Easter just around the corner, a visit to this weekend’s Chocolate Festival could technically be termed as ‘research’, or if you will, a warm-up. Put your elasticated pants on and work your way through stalls selling everything from truffles and bars to bon-bons and melted concoctions, pastries and hot chocolates to cakes and even raw cocoa. Take part in tastings, check out the sculptures and even learn how to make your own Easter Egg, effectively putting the Bunny entirely out of business in one day. Nice work.

Time: 11am-6pm
Place: Southbank Centre, Belvedere Road, SE1 8XX
Cost: Free
