Weekend Guide

Finally – the time has come to make a change. Sure the General Election’s not exactly looking to be an inspireathon of Barackian proportions, but the last time we voted for someone they were singing Careless Whispers on the X–Factor so we’re just about ready for the big guns! Cast your allegiances carefully this weekend by choosing between circus–freaks and birthday boys, laser shows and game play, and the rather aptly named Yes We Kan’t – this is still Britain, after all.

TOMORROW
Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant

Whilst we all wait for the iPad to drop in the UK, Regent Street’s Apple Shop are determined to keep us entertained in the mean time with a series of in–store appearances by the likes of The Mighty Boosh and stars of The Office; Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant. They’ll be discussing their first feature film, Cemetery Junction, and revealing the secrets of successful comedy – but then again, there’s probably an app for that too.

Tonight features Ben Osborne of Slipped Disco and Severino from Horse Meat Disco taking to the decks for a guaranteed Arabian–orgy of electronic and disco tunes.

Billing themselves as an apocalyptic red light district, there’ll be nudity, cabaret by the likes of Jonny Woo, Le Gateau Chocolat, Empress Stah and Ryan Styles, and flamethrowers running riot over original artwork by scrap–heap collective Mutoid Waste Co and the Duck Til Dawn bar, with live music and DJ sets to boot.

UJ The Game
Hmm, it’s not even close to Summer and we’re already seeing the first of a series of ‘boutique festivals’ popping up on our calendars. If you prefer to keep a healthy dose of cynicism intact (and a roof over your head), check out this new Games night. Throwing together music, DJ turns from James Lavelle and the Mystery Jets, and food from our new favourites, The Rebel Dining Society, there’ll also be interactive robots by Suspect Art, performers roaming the floor and a general sense of mayhem. Beats grass stains anyway.

Time: 9pm-4am
Place: Scala, 275-277 Pentonville Road, N1 9NL
Cost: £15
Info: The Game

SHOP
Bugs at Dover Street Market

Nothing says Summer like the slow onslaught of creepy crawlies and flying beasties that come out to play at the slightest hint of heat. So if you can’t beat them, fool them into a false sense of sisterhood with Ileana Makri’s Bug Collection of jewellery. Taking inspiration from the iridescent beetles of her native Greece, her necklaces, pendants and earrings come in multicoloured stones that’ll dazzle even the hardiest fire–ant.

Available in the Ground Floor Jewellery Space.
17-18 Dover Street, W1S 4LT.

BOOK AHEAD
Breakfast Club at The School of Life

It’s almost impossible to pin down a place at any of the School of Life sessions, so we’re giving you a timely heads up to their latest talks. Start the day the right way with some philosophical conversation, contemplation, and a side of eggs at The Breakfast Club series featuring Robert Rowland Smith and Mark Vernon. Molly Ringwald probably won’t be making an appearance, but what did we really learn from her adolescent agony anyway?

70 Marchmont Street, WC1N 1AB. Every second Wednesday morning starting 14th April. 7:30am-8:30am. £15.

This week’s hottest foodie destination

101 Pimlico Road
101 Pimlico Road, SW1 8PH – 0207 730 0202

Location
In an increasingly gourmet-friendly part of Pimlico – The Orange (from the boys behind Thomas Cubbitt) and chocolatier William Curley have also recently opened nearby.

Vibe
Young gun owners Will Guess (24) and chef Keith Goddard (29), who previously worked under Tom Aiken, are bursting with passion about good quality food. All the meat is from high-class butcher O’Shea’s and, this being the first restaurant site to ever serve truffles in London back in the Seventies, theirs are sourced from the original supplier.

Flavours
With a pie, a burger (Black Angus or rose veal which has quite a following) and cote de boeuf (for two) always on the menu, there are also plenty of lighter choices plus some fine fishy items like spicy deep fried whitebait with lemon aioli and roast cod with spinach, black pudding, parsley and chili.

Décor
Less is more here – you don’t want to scare off the locals – so the modest-sized room has been kept simple, light and neutral. Reminiscent of Kensington Place, back in the day.

Upshot
A combination of simple and slightly posh nosh brought up to date by Goddard’s expert touch. A good bet for a tranquil set lunch before you hit the King’s Road or somewhere to take the parents in the evening before a spot of culture at The Royal Court.
