Weekend Guide

April showers may bring May flowers, but we’ll settle for a horticulturally-deficient month if it means we can keep the current spate of sunshine and take advantage of the latest gastro pop-up by the river – The Summerhouse. Also on this weekend’s agenda, get those bodies in gear for free from a spectacular penthouse studio, squash your singleton status with a few timely SMS’, head to a Spring Ball and catch music from the Stereo MCs at the Southbank Centre. Simples.

UJ KICKS ASS
Free Kickboxing Trial Class at Epic Gym For Our Subs

There’s something about punching, kicking and screaming which, whilst admittedly sounding like the everyday activities of a toddler, can also be terribly cathartic. And where better to take out your aggression, tone up and get fit, than a slick penthouse apartment at the top of Westbourne Studios? Epic Gym opened here in February and offers kickboxing and boxfit classes at all levels, helping you work on your speed, flexibility and core strength whilst taking in the surrounding London skyline. You can even pop into the fully licensed bar downstairs for a post-workout tipple.

Fancy a go? Your first session is free when you quote UJ. Epic Gym, The Penthouse, 402 Westbourne Studios, 242 Acklam Road, W10 5JJ

TONIGHT
Speed Dating With Lolita

Singletons, get those mobile phones charged up and your sexting fingers at the ready – tonight’s event is part of the Barbican’s Ron Arad exhibition, and involves you sending messages to a lit-up, digital chandelier (made by Arad) to try and grab the attention of the one you admire. Hosted by The Tenor Ladies, there’ll also be alcohol from the fabulous Absolut rotating bar – making this the perfect time to send that drunken text and actually see some positive results, for once.

iconThe Orphanage Spring Ball
Not all orphanages have Dickensian associations – the Last Tuesday Society, for example, is only too generous in providing more. More dancing, drinking and general ribaldry in the cellars of the Adam Street members club, with music by The Alan Weekes Jazz Band, David TG, Penny Metal and Russell Taylor, a midnight feast courtesy of Suzette Field’s, and a strict dress code of ‘no ugly clothes.’ Better get pick-pocketing if you want that tailcoat in time.

Time: 10pm-4am
Place: 9 Adam Street, The Strand, WC2N 6AA
Cost: £20

UJ Record Store Day
Remember the days of flipping through LPs, sliding the disc out of its sleeve and gently placing the needle on the turntable? Yeah, we’re still struggling to think back to cassette tapes too – but we’re willing to learn. Today’s Record Store Day celebrates all that is wonderful about the golden oldies, with events at lots of independent stores around London. If you’re not sure where to start, pop into Pure Groove Records for acoustic performances by Bombay Bicycle Club and Babe Shadow and DJ sets by Stopmakingme, Lost in Paris and more.

Cost: Free

Ashish’s Ice Cream Dress

We’re finally feeling summery, and nothing says hot and heavy nights like an ice-cream cone dripping down your wrist, just begging to be licked off. Or, to avoid the mess just go with Ashish’s fully sequinned dress version; twice as yummy and just as covetable – watch out for who’s trying to get a taste.

BOOK AHEAD
Parliamentary Waffle House Tickets

Haven’t decided where to place your all-important vote? Been studiously catching the Party Political Broadcasts, dissecting manifestos and counting candidates? Or perhaps you just need something simpler – like a waffle - to make up your mind. Experimental foodies Bompas and Parr are going all Belgian on us with their Parliamentary Waffle House, where each party will be represented by a different waffle, and the end result should give us a snapshot of the nation’s feelings. Which are, by the looks of it, just hungry. Book your tickets asap to cast (iron) your vote.

UJThe Summerhouse Pop Up
A house in the Hamptons is, by American standards, the ultimate upper-class getaway – and now you can get in on the act without even having to step foot on Daddy’s private jet. The Summerhouse is a riverside pop-up in Little Venice, serving up sea-side style treats in cool surrounds – think blue and white checks, whitewashed walls and its own mooring so you can pull up by boat. Dig into New England Clam Chowder, Fish & Chips and round it off with Pimms Jelly and Ice-Cream.

Time: 10am – 11pm
Place: The Summerhouse, Opposite 60 Blomfield Road, W9 2PD

This week’s hottest foodie destination

Caravan
Stylishly laid-back diner and coffee roastery.
11-13 Exmouth Market, EC1R 4QD – 020 7833 8115

Location
On the site formerly known as Al’s Cafe Bar, on the corner of achingly edgy Exmouth Market.

Vibe
A stylishly laid-back all day restaurant, bar and coffee roastery, this relative newcomer is particularly suited to weekend grazing and lazing. Staff are friendly, plates come in all shapes and sizes (priced from £4 to £14) and the freshly roast java is seasonal, if you please, so if you order a flat white anywhere it should be here.

Flavours
An eclectic menu is a concept that can go horribly wrong but here, so far, they seem pretty adept at getting it right, from fluffy, crunchy felafal with apple and pepper relish to crispy trout, sweet potato and salted blackbean leeks. Good things have also leaked out about their fry-up and baked eggs with chorizo.

Décor
Played down, utilitarian chic in the form of bentwood chairs, cafe-style tables and low-hanging light fittings. Floor to ceiling windows along one wall means plenty of light and there’s outside seating available on warmer days. The roastery in the basement, which seats 12, can also be booked as a sort of private dining space.

Upshot
Kiwi chef-owner Miles Kirby cut his teeth at Providores in Marylebone while co-owner Chris Ammermann worked with swanky caterers Urban Caprice so, despite its fashionably low-key attitude, the place has an impressive pedigree. Oh, and waiter Tom is becoming an attraction all on his own.
