Health Food High
New foodie destinations to make this Summer your healthiest yet. Seriously.
Someone once told me that cravings have a lifecycle of 15 minutes; less than a mosquito, but ten times as annoying. It would be marginally more manageable if we craved carrots. But no, Britain’s national dish is a curry, confectionary comes deep-fried and the late-night delicacy of choice drips with grease on a rotisserie spit before being dressed up in mayo as a kebab. So we’re hardly rivalling LA’s booty-short, rollerblading health-food fanatics then (though we do a nice side-line in wife-beaters should the sun appear).

So why not make this the Summer of change and try to feed our insides rather than our cravings for once, starting with the Greaseless Spoon Cafe. Popping up all of this week, it’ll use Tefal jiggery pokery to magically health-ify your Full English favourites (complete with 3% fat chips), plus if you befriend their facebook page and request a reservation online, you can get your meal for free. Good for the waistband and the wallet.
Elsewhere, the East End’s Saf has just landed at Wholefoods in South Kensington with their signature vegan fare, ‘Saf-to-go’ takeaway options and a pretty amazing botanical cocktail bar. And if you’re going to wait to the last sunshiney minute to get healthy, you’re in luck too. Proud Camden is transforming it’s South Gallery into Proud Kitchen opening at the beginning of June, serving up fresh healthy food like scrambled tofu with coriander, sharing pots of Mussels, and small-eats like Hoi-sin duck at pocket-friendly prices of £6, £9 and £12.
Looks like health food’s 15 minutes of fame have finally arrived — now we just have to learn to crave it.
