Weekend Guide
UJ Banner

It could be the football, it could be the weather, it could be all manner of things… but whatever’s the cause, this is shaping up to be one heck of a weekend. From pop-up fine dining to cutting-edge dance, some fearsome bass-playing to the very embodiment of the surreal, there really is something for everyone.

And if it’s the World Cup that’s your thing, then make sure to check out our UJ hot picks of where to eat during the games, where to drink, hang out, or just hide if you’d rather avoid all mention of the f-word (and that’s ‘football’ by the way – I mean please folks, heads out of the gutter!).

Olympic Park, blah blah blah. Already your ears are closed to the O-word aren’t they? Well try this little number on for size to re-awaken your interest: perched (quite safely, I’m promised) above the 1.9 million square feet Westfield Stratford City site, with an insane view, is hard at work creating this summer’s dining spectacular. It’s running for three weeks only and at a less-than-meagre £75 per head. But the multi-course menu, lavish cocktails and typically sterling presentation will no doubt blow your mind and palate in an equally fabulous manner.

iconElliot’s @ Pavilion Café
Before opening their new restaurant in Borough Market this October, chef Isaac McHale and the rest of the team behind Victoria Park’s Pavillion Café will be hosting a little pre-launch taster every Friday throughout the summer. Well, we say “little” taster… In fact it’s an impressive five-course affair highlighting only the very best local produce, accompanied by five glasses of exceptional wines selected by the palates at Bottle Apostle. It’s going to be great – and they dinners are booking up almost as I type, so be quick!

iconSurreal House
Imagine a world where the surrealists won. Imagine a labyrinthine dwelling where Dali and Duchamp reigned supreme, where Magritte and Bourgeois were king and queen. Imagine a house where the minds of Cornell, Koolhass and Kienholz were free to roam, unfettered by the practical whims of those pesky modernists… and then step inside. For architects Carmody Groarke have created just such an artistic space – replete with haunted chambers and enchanting dreamscapes, the cinematically delirious and architecturally unheimlich. (So a little like a weekend at Ikea then…)

Time 11am-8pm
Place: Barbican, Silk Street, EC2Y 8DS
Cost: £10

SPECIAL UJ OFFER:
See Ditch for just £13 (normally £25)

It is a future not too far away: the British government has been reduced to a group of fascist dictators, the country plunged beneath rising waters. When all the conveniences of our society are stripped away, what is it that remains? The debut play from Beth Steel, Ditch is a cracker. Stark and unyielding yet shot through with a warmth and humanity, it explores a vision of the future that might lie just around the corner.

WORLD CUP
The UJ hot picks for the football season

Love it or hate it, there’s no getting away from the fact that it’s World Cup season, where the whole of the city gathers to drink and watch 22 grown men sweat it out over one poor ball. And like we always say: “if you can’t beat ‘em, then you may as well join ‘em in the best possible style.” So from sleek subterranean pizzas to full on DJ mash-ups, private stables to a little fashionable distraction, here’s the UJ rundown on the best places to catch the action. (Or avoid it, if you really feel like hiding from it all.)

iconLive Vibe
After an impressive sell-out season last year, Live Vibe is back offering the chance to catch the very cream of the emerging creative scene. Attracting young artists from throughout the performative media, from dance to music and even spoken word, each show takes an elemental theme (tonight it’s the turn of ‘water’) as four of the country’s leading youth and semi-pro companies battle it out with only one of them making it into next month’s finale at the Peacock Theatre.

Time: 7pm
Place: Lilian Baylis Studio, Rosebery Avenue, EC1R 4TN
Cost: £12

UJ The Frantastics
After the absolute pleasure of rocking out to Fran and her Frantastics down at 69 Colebrooke Row’s last week, I can honestly say that these gals do live up their name. They are hysterical, they are charming and with their storming music they got every pair of feet in the house dancing within minutes. It’s pure rock ‘n’ roll pared right back to its roots. It’s fabulous. It’s frantastic. And you’ve never heard Johnny Cash covered quite so good.

Time: 8:30pm
Place: Bistrotheque, 23-27 Wadeson Street, E2 9DR
Cost: £10

UJ Meltdown
We’re sort of saying ‘come and see this tonight’ – but frankly, get down to the Southbank whenever you can, because the award-winning guitarist Richard Thompson has racked up a stellar line-up for this year’s annual Meltdown festival. Highlights for the opening weekend include: the man himself with his Cabaret of Souls on Friday, Saturday’s celebration of the late folk legend Kate McGarrigle, and tonight’s performance by the Philharmonia Orchestra of Thompson’s favourite composers, including Vaughan Williams and the incredible Alan Hovhaness. And that’s just the first few days…

Time: Various
Place: Southbank Centre, Belvedere Road, SE1 8XX
Cost: £9-£40

UJ Meshell Ndegeocello
To tie in with her eighth and latest album, Devil’s Halo, the incredible Meshell Ndegeocello is storming it at the Jazz Café with a short series of gigs this weekend. If you’ve never seen her perform live it really is an absolute must. Musically fearsome and inspirational, she’s a prolific bassist/singer/songwriter who’s earned acclaim and infamy in equal measure – yet continues to summon nerve-hijacking, complex riffs and smart, genre-defying songs after 20 incredible years in the industry.

Time: 7pm
Place: Jazz Café, 5 Parkway, NW1 7PG
Cost: £22.50 adv.

This week’s hottest foodie destination

Inn The Park
Leafy lakeside urban idyll

St James’s Park, SW1A 2BJ – 020 7451 9999 www.innthepark.com

Location
The verdant setting of this peaceful St James’s Park spot, paired with Oliver Peyton’s modern British know-how, make this one of London’s fairest and most appealing warm weather hang-outs.

Vibe
So much more than just a cafe, you won’t find second rate sandwiches, melted KitKats and leaky tin teapots here. There’s a spacious, decked terrace looking out across the lake to Duck Island on which to enjoy a sunny day or balmy evening, and if it gets a bit blustery there’s plenty of contemporary but comfy seating inside – or you can make the most of the Grab & Go range that includes salads, tarts and homemade ice-cream, and create your own picnic.

Flavours
Well-sourced and inventively English, the food here is, perhaps surprisingly, cooked by an Australian chef, but this does mean that Amanda Wilson is a bit handy with a barbie and on Saturdays and Sundays from midday you can enjoy expertly grilled Longhorn organic burgers with Coleston Basset stilton, Barnsley lamb chops and Cornish sardines.

Décor
The elegantly sweeping design, with its Deco meets Scandinavian log cabin feel, are the work of Tom Dixon and Hopkin Architects. Described as ‘retro-industrial’ it’s actually gentler than that and blends in perfectly with the sweeping lawns and foliage. The latest feature is the rooftop bar where you can sit back and sunbathe or star-gaze with a cucumber and mint martini or watermelon cooler.

Upshot
Great British food and tipples in gorgeously green surroundings; Inn The Park is a summertime winner - breakfast here (fried duck egg and bacon and sage sausages, anyone?) being a particularly tranquil and indulgent way to start the day.
