Weekend Guide
UJ Banner

We hate to say it, but there’s a distinct sense of chill in the air, and we fear Autumn may be just around the corner. But before we dig out the woollens, there’s the Big Chill to contend with (figuratively, not literally fingers crossed!) and if you’re lucky enough to be going backstage check out the pop-up Giant Robot restaurant. And if you’re keeping it local we suggest booking in a special therapy session with Scottee and, having unearthed your inner child, taking it off to a retro games arcade or screaming it all out in Paradise’s new Karaoke room. Beats Prozac any day.

BOOK AHEAD
Friday Zoo Lates

Either London Zoo just got impressively 'on-trend' or Silent Sound Systems just got creative with their Silent Disco venues. Whichever way round it is, this month sees the critters at London Zoo joined by a whole new kind of species – wearing headphones. If that’s not your bag, the Late Fridays also include picnics by Angela Hartnett,  a seafood and oyster bar, mojitos and pimms, a BBQ and animal demonstrations and talks. Dance wild enough and you might be the subject of discussion. A slightly surprising hit, tickets for the first event on 6th August have already sold out, but there are three more Fridays, so get booking.

13th, 20th, 27th August, 5pm-10pm, £13.50-£16.20

iconTate Late
Tonight’s Late at Tate takes on the whimsical title of The Lovers, The Dreamers and Me, inviting visitors to join in a musical journey into a lost world populated by dinosaurs, rainbows, mountains and rivers. Yes, this is still the Tate and it is still London, but suspend your disbelief for a moment and put your imagination into the hands of a cast of musicians and artists bringing the galleries to life at night, and allow yourself to drift on islands afloat under strange stars. Well, it beats the Thames.

We don’t know about you, but our innermost thoughts are pretty deep, dark and dirty – which is why we’re not sharing. Scottee however has no such qualms, and tonight’s series of one–on–one, 20 minute dance encounters promises to be a revealing (and quite likely disturbing) trip inspired by his childhood therapy sessions in the attic bedroom at the RVT. Book in advance and give him a call from the foyer to be admitted upstairs to see what happens behind closed doors.

Time 12pm to 8:30am (7th)
Place: Royal Vauxhall Tavern, 372 Kennington Lane, SE11 5HY
Cost: £7

In association with PKR.com, you can now take your virtual game to the felt and play for real. 6,500 square metres, space for 200 players, a library and tutorial afternoons focusing on Texas Hold’em and Omaha will teach even the most amateur of tells to bluff’em with their muffin. Oh no wait... that’s just Gaga. Our mistake.

UJ Sink The Pink
We’ve never put much store into the ‘dance like nobody’s watching’ adage because let’s face it – they’re also pointing and laughing most of the time too. But tonight you’re being positively encouraged to bring the Funky Chicken, the Robot and the MC Hammer down to a dance–off that would bend the lisp right out of Louis Spence’s tongue. Hosted by Ma Butcher and featuring performances from Sink the Pink Dancers, TheDiscoKid and Breakfast Club, remember to pirouette for prizes as DJs Susan Okereke and Bright Light Bright Light remind you that your disco needs you. Even if you could do without it.

Time: 9pm-2am
Place: Concrete, 56 Shoreditch High Street, E1 6JJ
Cost: £5

UJ Karaoke Room
Bring your power ballads, your pop classics and your Dad rock – for now you have a place to vent your vocal talents that doesn’t come with an entourage of Japanese businessmen or a sparkly pink microphone. Opened this week, the chic Karaoke room at Paradise holds up to 15, has an extensive library of over 7500 songs, musically themed food and drink packages, stage clothes and a ‘booze’ button for that much needed shot of Dutch courage. Works for Courtney Love anyway.

Time: 6pm-12am
Place: Paradise by way of Kensal Green, 19 Kilburn Lane, W10 4AE
Cost: £30 per room, per hour
Info: Karaoke Room
