This weekend we’re all about rediscovering pure, simple good fun. Starting with a little trip down memory lane courtesy of cult classic Dirty Dancing and a night dedicated to carrying watermelons, before moving onto a Jurassic encounter of the disco kind. We’re even rediscovering the joy of vintage at Goodwood and in our giddy state, riding a Routemaster to reconnect with the good commuters of London. Fairy Godmothers at work? Maybe on Sunday...We’re having the time of our lives (sorry) – come join us!

TONIGHT
The Art of Conversation
The commute is painful enough with the packed carriages, hideous smells and jarring delays – so why would you want to strike up conversation with your fellow passengers? Especially the one with his iPod jacked up to ear-splitting volumes. Well, Global Cool reckon it’s time to get sociable, stop avoiding eye contact and focus those blank stares. Their seminars take place on an old Routemaster and this, the third instalment, promises to educate us on the diversity of our city’s occupants, share their stories and hopefully encourage you to open up. Ah well, at least these old buses have a clear exit route should it all go wrong, right?
7pm-8:30pm, Pick up at Speaker’s Corner, Hyde Park. Free. Email: getinvolved@globalcool.org to join. |

BOOK AHEAD
The Cineroleum
It’s been a summer of super cinematic events, from the launch of the Aubin Cinema to open-air screenings under the stars. And to cap it all off we’ve just discovered this little gem, masquerading as a petrol station by day and transforming into a picture palace from the golden days of cinema by night– think beautiful signage, paper tickets, popcorn and a rollcall of films including Barbarella and a night of Buster Keaton shorts. The first performance is already sold out, with further films up for grabs until mid-September – so get your reservations in now.
£5, 100 Clerkenwell Road, EC1M. |

COMPETITION
Glyndebourne at Somerset House Tickets
If Somerset House’s filmic night passed you by and you fancy taking in something a little more high-brow, you’ll love the three upcoming nights of opera broadcasted live from Glyndebourne from the 20th-22nd August. Projected onto a spectacular, high-def big screen in the outdoor courtyard, you can order luxury hampers from Fortnum and Mason, bring a blanket and enjoy either Billy Budd, The Rake’s Progress (with design by David Hockney), or Hansel and Gretel. UJ have a pair of VIP tickets to give away for each performance. To be in with a chance of winning simply tell us: which show you’d like to catch and why.

PARTY WITH BOUJIS AT BLUE MARLIN IN IBIZA
With the impeding long weekend winking at us from afar we’re already thinking about how to really make the most of the extra time out. If you fancy avoiding the Notting Hill Carnival crowds and getting your bank holiday off with a sun-soaked bang, then pack your bags, get your passport up to par and allow us to point you in the direction of Ibiza, where the Boujis bash on August 30th is promising to be the party of the weekend.

TIME OUT
Tea Tox
Bored of the usual afternoon tea options? As the chill starts to set in and the kettle gets its long-awaited resurrection, we’re heading to the Caprice Holding’s beautiful Asian restaurant Bam-Bou for their tea salon blending the quintessential English tradition with Eastern style. Think Chrysanthemum Teas, Rose Tea Buds and our favourite - the giant unfurling Flowering Tea Bulbs served in beautiful glass pots. Nibble on some pandan and coconut agar agar and dream of warmer climes.
From 15th August, Daily 3-5pm. 1 Percy Street,
W1T 1DB .

Tom Binns at Matches
Here at UJ HQ we’re all obsessed with these Tom Binns t-shirts, taking the designer’s signature offbeat baubles and superimposing them onto clean white tops for a jangle-free jewellery option. Including sparkling stones, neon nuggets, skulls and heavy hardware, they’re going quicker than we can type our card details into the computer. Best beat us to it.

This week’s hottest foodie destination
Bond & Brook
Fashion hub Fenwick gets expert gourmet treatment
63 New Bond Street, W1A 3BS - 020 7629 0273
www.fenwick.co.uk
Location
This new Mayfair pitstop is the latest addition to family-owned department store Fenwick, which in the last three years has quietly undergone some major redevelopment. As well as the restaurant, the store now boasts a brand new spa and an affogato bar designed by Tom Bartlett. Voguettes from Hanover Square - a Celine bag’s throw away - will be flocking.
Vibe
The first venture for A Private View, the restaurant consultation group run by queen of critics Fay Maschler and Simon Davis, who have teamed up with posh catering company Rhubarb and former Le Cafe Anglais chef Daniel Taylor. London’s foodie community will no doubt be keeping a beady eye on the attention to detail, which should be immaculate.
Flavours
The menu at B&B - which is open for breakfast, brunch, lunch and high tea - is somewhat eclectic, featuring everything from girlie egg-white omelettes and an ‘Array of Cold Soups’ to steak frites, vitello tonnato and even prawn Pad Thai, which seems an odd inclusion. We’re looking forward to trying the bijou full English in a skillet with a Virgin Mary shot and the gilded fondant fancies.
Décor
Surprisingly space-age, the second floor dining room is adorned in the palest palette of dove-grey, silver and white, with a marble floor and sculptural pewter bar making the place feel almost clinically cool. Barbarella-style chairs and stacks of style tomes on the shelves are further reminders that this is a fashion cafe, sweetie.
Upshot
While there’s something a bit off-kilter about a food critic being involved so closely with the launch of a new restaurant, we doubt Fay & Co. have their sights set on a Michelin star but have instead drawn on all their positive experiences to create a rather chic little place to eat.
