Sibling Rivalry
Polpo’s sister restaurant Polpetto opens
Little sisters steal your make-up. Younger brothers reveal your porn stash. They mimic everything you do. And the oldest always has to go through the curfew wringer first, right?
|
|
But we’re coming around to the idea of younger siblings - especially when they’re as charming as the latest slew of restaurant sister-sites popping up around Londontown. Bocca di Lupo’s dessert space Gelupo is fast becoming a UJ fave for afternoon office gelato (our league table stats claim pistachio’s a winner with pineapple sorbet not far behind), whilst our tipple table of choice is The Salt Yard’s offshoot Dehesa, for the Spanish meat and cheese boards with Iberian wines. Further afield, Heston Blumenthal’s just opened his second pub, The Crown, serving Brit classics like steak and ale pie and banana Eton mess. With his much-hyped restaurant ‘Dinner’ set to hit the capital’s Mandarin Oriental hotel later this year Blumenthal’s family is on course to hit Brady Brunch proportions.
So it follows that our new lunchtime fix comes courtesy of Polpo’s new baby, Polpetto, sitting on top of the gorgeous French House. Launched yesterday (secretly and surprisingly before the more highly-publicised promise of ‘Spuntino’, the supposedly second – and now third- eatery in Russell Norman’s stable), this literally-little sister only has 28 covers and is a teensy, jewel-box version of the main event perfect for intimate Italian meals.
And like Polpo, it doesn’t take reservations for dinner. What a copy-cat. Muuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuum!
INFO Polpetto is open now, Upstairs at the French House, 49 Dean Street, W1D 5BG. Mon-Sat: 12pm-3pm, 5:30pm-11pm www.polpetto.co.uk

The Experientialist: Carter & Bond
|
A treasure of a men’s barbers combining old school cool with quirky West London charm.
Women–folk love to wax lyrical about their hairdressers, colourists, stylists,et cetera. For us chaps, however, with just the one scissor–wielder to choose for the whole lot the decision can be tougher. So The Experientialist took a spin in Carter and Bond’s barbers’ chair to test out their skills. Could this be The One?
There’s nice little UJ Subscriber Offer in it for you too.
