Weekend Guide
UJ Banner

There’s a touch of the March madness about the UJ office at the moment... but then we have collectively been attacked (verbally) in Starbucks, fought to keep our own M&S bag from being stolen on the bus (no seriously), learnt all the words to Nelly’s ‘Just a Dream’ (and almost empathised with him) and eaten our way through three-quarters of a 2kg tub of Swizzels Matlow confectionary (so we might just be high). We need a good time, so join us as we swing by a magical soiree, see some prehistoric friends take to the decks, dress as giant magical wolves, and eat popcorn. It makes perfect sense to us – but considering our scrambled psyches, it could all be just a dreeeeeeeeeam. Albeit a good one.

TONIGHT
Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs

If you’re not totally over Barney the Purple Dinosaur or think a good Halloween costume comes in the form of an all-encompassing foam bodysuit in the shape of an animal, you’ll love musical act Orlando Higginbottom’s Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs. His balance of pop sensibility, sharp basslines and dance floor melancholy have marked him out as one of the dance music’s brightest new talents, with UJ falling for last single Garden’s soft 80’s charm. Get a preview of new release 'Household Goods' tonight.

CAMP, 70-74 City Road, EC1Y 2BJ. 8pm-late, £8 adv.

If there is such a thing (half the UJ office is still looking), this classic Oscar Wilde production is bound to know where to look. Or just get its characters in the usual tangle of period drama distress – which we’re loving now that our Sunday nights are being spent firmly ensconced in front of Downton Abbey’s upstairs/downstairs intrigue. Maybe the eligible men are all below stairs...?

CAZADORES/UJ
Dia de los Muertos

For this year’s UJ/Cazadores Dia de los Muertos pair-up we threw down at Bungalow 8 for our fiesta – and boy was it one hell of party. There were skulls and tombstones at every turn; killer sangritas and Cazadores margaritas; ghouls, devils and some truly great music from our cracking DJs: J Saintil, Jeffrey Disaster and James Cooper (Bi Bop). So huge thanks to everyone who got all dressed up and joined in the fun. And we can’t wait till next year.

FILM: The Kids are Alright
Your mothers are lesbians and the most contact you’ve had with your father was contained in a petri dish - and now you want to know who he is. The Kids are Alright is a totally enjoyable All-American Family film with a twist, starring Julianne Moore and Anette Benning as the bourgeois couple whose children seek out their gardening hippy father who has an eye for the ladies. So at least they all have one thing in common.

Time: 5:30pm/8:30pm

Cost: £12.50 - £25

Les Deux Salons
Modern brasserie deluxe dining comes to Covent Garden

40-42 William IV Street, WC2N 4DD - 020 7420 2050
www.lesdeuxsalons.co.uk

Location
It’s a funny little spot, the knee crease between Trafalgar Square and Covent Garden that this much-hyped newcomer sits on. Terroirs, opposite, has already made it an unlikely destination, and helped attract a new set to the area, so my guess is that this brasserie of sorts can only add to the appeal.

Vibe
Anthony Demetre and Will Smith have already impressed London diners with Wild Honey and Arbutus, their USP being a modern, relaxed take on white tablecloth dining at prices that don’t make you wince (too much) when you peer at the bill. Their new baby is a more ambitious enterprise that, from first impressions, could be described as La Coupole meets Balthazar.

Flavours
Rather than featuring the usual French fare, the menu reflects modern London’s increasingly sophisticated tastes. So there’s a very Smith & Demetre bavette of Scottish beef with shallot sauce, in its own copper pan, and a quinoa, broccoli and preserved lemon salad that could be inspired by a dish from Moro. There are also retro puds like rum baba that seem to be getting people very excited, but I was quite happy with the ‘ravioli’ of rose veal wrapped around cavolo nero and goat’s curd. That, and an utterly buttery potato puree.

Décor
Designer of the moment Martin Brudnizki has done a spot-on job, turning this former All Bar One into a movie-perfect rendition of a Parisian brasserie, from the copper-topped bar to the soft globe lighting and mottled mirrors to maroon mohair banquettes.

Upshot
Considering it’s billed as a brasserie my only real quibble is that it’s a shame there’s no all-day menu. Having said that, it’s great to see Smith and Demetre turning their hand to something more glam but still keeping the prices pleasing. I’m looking forward to trying a slice of this shimmering Parisian chicness in the evening.
