More Than Your Average Slice of Toast

Nopi leads our line-up of London’s more ‘interesting’ breakfast options

So what did you manage to squeeze in for breakfast today? A Pop Tart (do they still even make those?), toast or lonely piece of fruit? Or maybe just a large latte…

Allegedly the most important meal of the day, breakfast can so often be an after-thought – and sadly the most predictable. But does it really need to be that way?

Take the Hawksmoor Cornflake Milkshake, which remains our go–to for the morning after the night before: stomach-lining, childishly magical greatness in a glass. Likewise, the perfect companion to a site-roasted Caravan Flat White has to be their Grilled Coconut Bread with Lemon Curd and Cream Cheese. Beats any run-of-the-mill Almost Croissant hands down.

Stepping up the bizarre-brekkie game, culinary newcomer Nopi touts a pretty unique Black Rice Pudding with Coconut Milk, Banana and Mango. And a little bird tells us they also knock out a mean Shakshouka – a tasty North African car-crash of spiced peppers, tomatoes and cooked eggs.

Over in Covent Garden, the weird-sounding and even weirder-looking bowl of white goop that is Kopapa’s Turkish Eggs is unfathomably amazing – two soft-poached eggs lurking within a heap of Greek yoghurt and melted chilli butter. Which is almost as bizarre and addictive as Bill’s vegetarian breakfast, with it’s spicy chick peas, guacamole, hummus, and poached eggs on chunky toast.

We’ve become endlessly adventurous with every other aspect of our social lives – from experimental cocktails to meatgasmic pop-ups. And as Grandma Junkies used to say: start as you mean to go on…
So why not spread a little of that fearless spirit to the once-humble breakfast?
