Weekend Guide
UJ Banner

With the impending hullaballoo of the Royal Wedding we’re taking a step back this weekend to catch our breath. If morning TV is anything to go by, we have outfits to plan, cake to bake and place settings to consider, with the potential for Union Jack flags too (seriously, is anyone else finding the pre-preparation options a little ridiculous? You’ve already bought a fascinator? Oh right then...). So kick back with a couple of sample sales, take a walk on the secretive side with a labyrinthine art evening, explore a surreal world, and get a taste of the simple life with a Cannes wildcard. And maybe buy some bunting.

FRIDAY

THEATRE: London Road
This new production at the National Theatre takes the 2006 murders of five sex workers in a rural town in Ipswich as its subject matter, transporting the audience into a world of suspicion, fear and upheaval. As if that’s not twisted enough, they’ve turned the story of the Suffolk Strangler into a musical – they’ve promised it won’t be ‘sensationalist’, but we’re guessing it’s not going to be a sing-a-long kind of show either.

Time: 7:30pm
Place: National Theatre, South Bank, SE1 9PX
Cost: £16.50

OTHER: The King & The Minotaur
We like a good labyrinth, especially if it doesn’t involve David Bowie. Get hold of your entry ‘Crest of the Minotaur’ and hit this disused 1850s stable. The Liquid Room is up first for booze bravery before you’re plunged into the maze, filled with both secret refuges and challenges via various bits of art, music, sculpture and performance hidden throughout. No Goblin King or missing baby bros here.

Time 7pm – 12am
Place: A Labyrinth Gallery, 7 St Pancras Way, NW1 0PB
Cost: £7

SHOP
Oakley O Store Re-Launch

You haven’t lived if you haven’t sported a pair of Oakley wraparound sunglasses in your time – or at least, you weren’t a kid growing up in the 90s. The iconic brand are finally ready to re-open their Covent Garden signature store, a feat designed to not just ‘pique interest’ but leave you ‘astounded and awestruck’ too. If a 12 ft tall, 800lb metallic angel and a chandelier made out of 4000 pairs of Frogskins won’t do it, how about the Custom Lab, 3D experience, etching machine and O Lab (whose lasers and impact rigs educate customers on optical performance and impact protection, no less)? Head down this weekend and pick something to suit the sunny weather – fingers crossed eh?

PARTY PHOTOS
Bombay Sapphire Presents the Imagination Installation

UJ subscribers were amongst the lucky first few to check out Bombay Sapphire’s sparkling Imagination Installation on Tuesday night; a multidimensional, Swarovski-adorned piece of art representing the top-tier gin’s ten botanical ingredients. Luckily the good stuff wasn’t all hung to the wall and the theme of imagination stretched its legs as guests sipped creative cocktails to match. We loved the martini served with candyfloss, the ‘Perfectly Poised’ twist on the classic Collins created with the aid of soda fountains, and the ‘African Haze’ bramble variant which appeared in a fog of dry ice. Gazpacho, Miso Soup and Red Thai Curry were served in shot glasses whilst bowls of multicoloured popcorn circulated, and like locusts we descended on lollipops, macaroons and salted caramel cubes served on sticks. The only thing they hadn’t invented was a cure for the following morning’s headaches.

PODCAST OF THE WEEK
Take it Easy

Something old, something new, many things borrowed, nothing blue. There’s something for everyone in this mix from Kerrin Audio Sushi. She eases you in gently with a lush new track from Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore and some serious soul from Jonathan Jeremiah’s debut album. Then cranks it up with a couple of reworked old favourites: Hoodie Allen’s Evil Woman (yes, it’s ELO and yes it’s addictive) along with a dance remix of Beach Boys’ “Wouldn’t It Be Nice”. Yes it would. Enjoy.

ART: Joan Miró
One of the biggest art openings of 2011, don’t miss the rare opportunity to get an eyeful of over 150 paintings, drawings and sculptures by world renowned Spanish artist, Joan Miró. Moving away for the abstract great’s highly recognisable, fluid and brightly coloured dreamscapes, this exhibition offers a glimpse of the more political, socially switched-on side to many of Miró’s works.

Time: 10am – 10pm
Place: Tate Modern, Bankside,
SE1 9TG
Cost: £14

FILM: Meek’s Cutoff
We’e not gonna lie; despite Depp’s involvement we just didn’t get ‘Rango’ and its Wild West animated animals. If you’re looking for a Western with proper grit, Meek’s Cutoff is the best call this year (despite the Cannes c*ck up which saw Coppola walk away with the Golden Lion). As a group of settlers try to cross the Oregon Trail, they’re torn between a misleading guide and a Cayuse Indian warrior – a natural born enemy. Simple, stark, and a fight for survival – you quite cosy in that Aubin sofa with your footstool there?

Time: 5:45pm/ 8:30pm
Place: Aubin Cinema, 64-66 Redchurch Street, E2 7DP
Cost: £8-£30
Info: Meek’s Cutoff
