Weekend Guide
UJ Banner

Try as we might, there’s just so much darn culture on this weekend that we’re going to suggest you hold out on the tipsification (come on, you can do it) and revel instead in the sheer variety of things to do. Indie food and vinyl markets (not at the same time, obvs), retail galore, a smattering of exclusive competitions, some outdoor theatre, a pop-up cinema… Talk about a busy weekend… it’s enough to drive an Urban Junkie to drink! (Well, that didn’t last long.)

International Music Summit - Agenda Announced

There’s less than a week left until the IMS, but that’s still enough time to get flights booked, find a scarce hotel room and join in on the festivities in Ibiza next week. And with the final schedule launched with gems like a keynote interview with Pepe Rosello (owner of Space), a chat with the Global Music Director of W Hotels and a presentation by Resident Advisor re: the new house sound- it’s looking like it’s definitely going to be worth the trip. Add that to the festivities surrounding the summit (IMS events, Ushuaia Beach Hotel opening, Borrell at Ibiza Rocks Bar and first glimpses of Pacha’s new bar Lio) and we’d say it’s a no brainer. FILM: The Nomad: Fight Club
Even though the first, second and indeed third rules of Fight Club prohibit one from actually talking about Fight Club, we’re just going to have to risk it as those film-loving souls over at Nomad Cinema are once again at it, tantalizing our cinephilic brains. Tonight sees the Brad Pit and Edward Norton cult classic screened in, wait for it, the iconic Bethnal Green boxing venue, York Hall – so now you can actually smell the blood and sweat as you try to resist joining in and smacking the person next to you with the IKEA catalogue that you conveniently brought along.

ART / LAST CHANCE: Pioneers of the Downtown Scene
Closing on Sunday, this weekend is your last chance to catch a fascinating exhibition showcasing the pioneering (and sometimes decidedly bizarre) individual and collaborative work of musician Laurie ‘O Superman’ Anderson, choreographer Trisha Brown and artist Gordon Matta-Clark. Born in the world of 1970s Downtown New York – filled with its converted warehouses, vast studios and artistic influx – the creative triumvirate represented a creative force to be reckoned with. Playful, edgy, explorative, and hugely inspirational, catch this invigorating exploration and celebration of a bygone burgeoning art scene – before it disappears once more.

Time 11am-8pm
Place: Barbican, Silk Street,

The first dedicated
UK outpost for Burberry Brit launches in London

Sponsored Listing

With stores already in Paris, New York and Milan, Burberry have finally brought their ready-to-wear Burberry Brit line home to Blighty – and it’s hot. The first UK store has set up its discretely iPadalicious, dark oak and polished chrome home in the heart of Covent Garden. And after the all-star launch last Thursday, hosted by the brand’s ever-charming Christopher Bailey and populated by an aptly beautiful crowd including the likes of Ellie Goulding and star model progeny, Tara Ferry and Tali Lennox, the store is now open for all. Celebrating the best bits of Brit-ness, it’s perfect for topping up on your more casual designer essentials (including a certain trench that we’re absolutely lusting after) – and be sure to keep an eye out for the series of in-store live gigs they’re planning for this summer.

MUSIC: Independent Label Market
Downloads might be the easiest way to buy music nowadays – but (and we don’t care if it’s a cliché) nothing will ever beat the feel and sound of a prized vinyl (or at least CD) collection. Period. Descending on Soho’s local Berwick Street market with a very special treat for music lovers, independent labels galore (including the likes of Peacefrog, Chess Club, Wall of Sound, Mute and XL) will be out in force to pitch their wares, with label bosses on hand for a chat, and even the promise of few special artist appearances to keep the musical ball rollin’.

Time: 8am-10:30pm
Place: Berwick Street Market, Berwick Street, W1F
Cost: Free entry

SHOP: Maltby Street
In the face of the unfortunate ‘Bermondsey Seven’ incident last weekend (which saw the powers-that-be at Borough Market eject several ‘two-timing’ traders down at the smaller, vaguely-neighbouring Maltby Street), now’s the time to head to Bermondsey and show a little support. And since support at Maltby involves supping on artisanal ales from Kernel. snacking on meats and cheeses throughout the arches, maybe a bottle of vino at Aubert & Mascoli rounded off with fresh coffee from Coleman Coffee – we’re more than happy to show our community spirit. Vive the little guy!

Time: 9am-2pm
Place: Maltby Street, SE1
Cost: Free entry

INTERNATIONAL
Nobu at Cannes

With the Cannes Film Festival drawing to a typically magnificent close this weekend, there’ll no doubt be more than a few Hollywood suits inking big-dollar deals at the Nobu Berkeley’s pop-up. High on the rooftop of the 3.14 Hotel Cannes boutique hotel, the menu is a riviera-licious take on the traditional Nobu genius: classic sushi dishes, yakimono and salads all served with sides of idyllic poolside views of the croisette as standard – no doubt with a few tipsy aspiring starlets, as a garnish.

Betrayal

Taking a break from being one of world cinema’s most fascinating actresses, Kristin Scott Thomas is back on the boards this summer, two years after winning an Olivier for her amazing role in The Seagull. This time round, she’s the adulterous wife in Harold Pinter’s 1978 Betrayal, which unfolds in reverse chronological order tracking a seven year affair between her character and her husband’s best friend. Scott Thomas can do glacial deception in her sleep – and her proven rapport with The Seagull’s Ian Rickson spells only wondrous things for this revival of the Pinter classic.

THEATRE: Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre
With summertime seemingly on-hand, nothing beats escaping the grand ol’ theatres of Shaftesbury Avenue for a leafy amphitheatre in North London. Especially when The Open Air Theatre’s summer season is kicking-off with Lord of the Flies. Staged by the team behind last year’s Crucible, the classic desert island schoolboy adventure is sure to be an outdoor cracker – and while the season continues with the likes of Jimmy Carr, I Am Kloot and a Punchdrunk-ified Beggar’s Opera, we say get in there from the start. Of course, this being Bighty, don’t forget to bring an extra layer for the evening chill and to pray for clear skies!

This week’s hottest foodie destination

The Riding House Café
Rule Britannia with the juiciest burger on the touristy block.

43-51 Great Titchfield Street, W1W 7PQ.
020 7927 0840

www.ridinghousecafe.co.uk

Location
While we were scratching our heads wondering how Chutney & Lager, the ‘Indian tapas’ (ahem) restaurant that previously occupied this light-filled Noho site, failed to take hold (despite having the greatest name, like, evah!), The Riding House Café has quickly established itself as the place for post-Top Shop martinis. This all-day brasserie’s arrival marks a first move across the river for the guys behind style-savvy SE1 venues, The Garrison and Village East.

Vibe
It’s like the Wolseley’s had a wobble and got itself a Soho House makeover. Bromance is in the air over breakfast and lunch as young media types establish the RHC as their new canteen. A more flamboyant cocktail crowd arrives as the shops shut. Reservations are only available for the Dining Room, so a lively ‘walk-in’ vibe permeates the bar, lounge and ‘Dining Hall’ with its communal table.

Flavours
The ‘full and proper breakfast’ and eggs hussard (a Schiller’s Liquor Bar brunch standard – basically eggs benny with bordelaise sauce) suggest you can breakfast like a king at RHC – though there are juices and mueslis for those that start their day more gingerly. An alluring menu of colourful ‘small plates’ such as our asparagus and parmesan, chermoula poussin and veal and pork meatball go down very nicely the rest of the day though there are bigger plates – fish and chips, burgers and steaks – too. So good are the chorizo hash browns, they’re on all day.

Décor
The distressed brickwork, the white metro tiles, the tasselled ‘granny’ lampshades are very familiar design details but it wouldn’t be fair to say there’s nothing here we haven’t seen elsewhere before. The display copies of ‘Horse and Hound’ and the pre-scuffed retro-futurist customised Dyson Airblade, in particular, are new ones on us.

Upshot
At last, an off-Oxford Street venue that’s in-tune with what we want and when we want it. Pre-shopping, post-shopping and, above all, on Sundays, we will be there.
