Bank Holidaaaaay! You’d think we’d be tired of saying that by now, what with the dozen or so we’ve had off this month. And yet… here we are again, as excited as ever. So what could we offer you that would trump the natural high of a long weekend? Why, a long weekend packed to the rafters with drink and food obviously. There’s a sneaky soft launch down in Bermondsey, some new and revamped eating and drinking spots both East and West – oh, and the odd art, outdoor cinema and block party micro-fest to keep things interesting.
Eat, drink and party hard everyone. And we’ll catch you on the other side.

TONIGHT
Step Inside Bar

And they say alcohol doesn’t make everything better. Pah! As part of the already great Clerkenwell Design Week, the boys behind the local Giant Robot and Redhook restaurants have teamed up with Inside UK and architect Giles Miller to convert the old disused petrol station on Clerkwenwell Road into a three-day pop-up bar. Punctuating the various talks and shows that make up CDW, the Step Inside Bar promises the old design classics of good drinks, good tunes and good times coupled with what might just be the largest legal smoking terrace. Surely those are the very foundations of any esteemed design premise, if you ask us.

EAT: The Meatwagon
Start the bucolic bank holiday weekend with a twist by heading up to the wide blue yonder that is the Dalston Roof Gardens, where an evening of film and carnivorous outdoor revelry awaits. Back in full swing after last summer's successful pilot, tonight's hosts at this rooftop retreat are no less than everyone’s beloved Meatwagon boys, serving up their legendary burgers beneath the East London stars. Satisfy your meat-fix, then wash it all down with a beverage or two for good measure – plus there are some film screenings in the mix for good luck. But really, this one’s all about the meat.

EAT: José Soft Launch
José Pizzaro (formerly at Brindisa) has a new venture on the horizon – a tapas/sherry bar on Bermondey Street, simply titled José, and it’s looking great. The bad news is that it’s not officially open till next month. (Boo!) The good news is that if you swing by this afternoon/evening you should catch him in soft-launch mode with a choice 50% off. (Nice.) Drawing loosely on Barcelona’s lively Boqueria, the ever-changing market-style menu promises everything from Razor Clams a la Plancha to Spring Lamb Chuletillas with Alioli and Crab and Basil Croquetas.

Time: 12pm-10.30pm
Place: 104 Bermondsey Street,

SHOP: Hoxton Boutique: End of an Era
After 12 years (can it really be so long? Yikes!), Shoreditch’s nigh-on legendary Hoxton Boutique is closing its bright, bold and generally fabulous doors for the last time at the end of the month. But fear not! Plans are in the works for a bigger, badder online store in the not too distant future, together with an expansion of their in-house Hobo label. But in the meantime, come bid your fond farewells – and grab as many bargains as you can lay your Hoxton-lovin’ hands on – as the Boutique sees out its reign with a so-long super sale.

Time: 11am-7pm
Place: Hoxton Boutique, 2 Hoxton Street,N1 6NG

FILM: Popupscreens: Ghostbusters
What better way to spend a recovery-Sunday than with a good ol’ blast from the cinematic past? Only, forget the (frankly clichéd) sofa option. Instead hit this outdoor cinema over at Ravenscourt Park for seminal ‘80s schlock (or is it a masterpiece?) Ghostbusters. Settle down as history’s most awesome trio of misfit paranormal exterminators don ridiculous boilersuits and cracking special effects in an effort to save New York from pesky poltergeists and the rampant Marshmallow Man. And all this while you dive into Ostrich Burgers, Springbok or maybe some perfectly cooked Wildebeest – and presumably some marshmallows somewhere on the menu.

Time: 7pm doors, screening 8pm
Place: Ravenscourt Road, W6 0UL
Cost: £7

NIGHTLIFE: Street Fest
Time to sling those boxer shorts high, the jeans super low, and dig out that limited edition Stussy t-shirt you cherish so for this one-day Shoreditch block-party celebration of all that is “street” in the world. With live graffiti going down, hip-hop battles, skate displays, food from around the globe, music from – among others – the amazing voice of Ghostpoet, plus DJ sets and short film screenings, there’s more to see and do than we can fit into this li’l box. Guess you’ll just have to turn up and see for yourself.

Time: 1pm-11pm
Place: Hearn Street & Hearn Street Car Park, EC2A 3LS
Cost: £10
Info: Street Fest

INTERNATIONAL
Cannes in a Can

The suits are shiny, the yachts are gold and the lips are as inflated as the egos that trawl the Croisette from early morning meeting to late night party. And yet, despite the beguilingly bling crowd that frequents the year’s biggest event in cinema, the Cannes Film Festival somehow always manages to churn out some of the most discerning art house films that are likely to reach our cinemas. So, we donned the dark shades (yes, even in the darkness of the cinema auditoria) to bring you our five favourite picks from this year’s offerings.

SEE: Taryn Simon
Serious and sombre might sum up this Tate Modern survey of recent works by American artist Taryn Simon – but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth taking time out of your bank holiday wanders along the South Bank to check it out. Simon sensitively combines photography and text to document everything from feuding families in Brazil to v the Bosnian genocide all featured in a show which pits issues such as territory, power-mongering and religion alongside more psychological and physical human considerations. Like we said hardly chortle-worthy – but perfect for an afternoon of chilled out contemplation.

Time: 7:45pm
Place: Tate Modern, Bankside,
SE1 9TG
Cost: Free

EAT: Pizza East Portobello
Now fully broken-in after its soft-launch, Pizza East’s new Portobello branch is a different beast to its Shoreditch predecessor, switching out the industrial feel for some more West London cosiness, without compromising on a sharp, fun crowd. Head on over now that it’s found its feet for the predictably killer pizzas – but be sure to try some of the new menu additions (like the Chargrilled Squid and Heritage Tomato Salad) and save space for the Ricotta Cheesecake which they really nail here. They may not take reservations, but with a stellar wine list and various bars to perch on, waiting really isn't a problem. An instant neighbourhood classic – and a much needed one, too.

Time: 10am-12am
Place: 310 Portobello Road,
W10 5TA
Cost: Free entry

The Gilbert Scott
Marcus Wareing’s posh new place at St Pancras

St Pancras Renaissance Hotel, Euston Road, NW1 2AR.
020 7278 3888

www.thegilbertscott.co.uk

Location
After many years and many, many millions, the vast Midland Grand hotel in King’s Cross has finally been restored to its Victorian splendour, re-named the St Pancras Renaissance and re-opened for business. For those of us with only average-sized pockets (rooms ere towards the impressively pricey), the experience will be limited to the ground floor with its splendid bar and Marcus Wareing’s second restaurant, The Gilbert Scott, named after the architect responsible for the glorious Gothic pile.

Vibe
It’s fair to say that it’s aimed less at London locals than Eurostar travellers beginning or ending their jaunt with a treat. But that’s no bad thing: rather than the blasé, expense account-atmosphere of other high-end joints, fellow diners here tend towards the jolly and appreciative. Plus, the fact that you’re unlikely to bump into anyone you know gives the place a frisson: perhaps it’ll replace Kettners as the venue of choice for adulterous couples not wanting to be spotted.

Flavours
Quaint, olde worlde Britishness is the name of Wareing’s game: dishes include Mrs Peckham’s lobster and mushrooms on sippets. But unlike Heston’s similarly history-minded approach at Dinner, the food here is more straightforward than it sounds. Tweed Kettle, for example, is just a perfectly cooked fillet of sea trout with a crust. Pudding is where he cuts loose, with witty takes on classics: cheddar cheese ice cream accompanies Eccles cakes, and Kendal Mint Cake provides the inspiration for a genius choc ice.

Décor
Pretty astonishing, from eye-level upwards at least, the ceiling’s white metalwork is doily-intricate, and the butter-yellow walls lined with old mirrors, paintings and pillars topped with lashings of gold leaf. You get the impression that, after restoring the hotel’s original features, there wasn’t much money left for furniture: it’s pleasant enough but unmemorable. On your way out, however, be sure to stand at the bottom of the hotel’s grand staircase and gaze upwards at the multi-floored view. Alas, a polite gent will stop you actually going up – unless, of course, you caved and splurged on a room after that third glass of Viognier.

Upshot
An oasis of class and refinement on the Euston Road, suitable for both your visiting gran and your new squeeze.
