A short week means only one thing: it’s almost the weekend! So whether you’re coming to Cowley with us and taking (another) long weekend, or are here in London- either way, the weekend is on its way. And with options like disco dancing at the zoo, dinner with the Disappearing Dining Club or at Nuno’s new spot, as well as cultural picks like a little Sunday jazz at the Vortex– we think you’ll be entertained. Whatever you do, have a good one.

DRINK: Zoo Lates
It is, in my humble opinion, one of the great sadnesses of adulthood that we can no longer enjoy the zoo with childlike eyes; set aside out real-world cynicism for a few hours and relish the wonders of the many glorious animals. At the first of London Zoo’s summer late night session, however, we can now do just that. And what’s more, we can do it tipsy! (You sip champagne with the penguins and tell me it doesn’t taste better.) Plus there’s ‘twisted cabaret’, Silent Disco, and a BBQ – though hopefully not to the detriment of any of the usual residents.

DRINK: Taste By Appointment
Nip up to the heights of Paramount for a session with Grey Goose’s Joe McCanta (also the man behind Shoreditch’s Saf restaurant) as he unravels your palate preferences and presumptions with some amazing visual-taste illusions (savoury-looking ‘parmesan’ that tastes like chocolate; candyfloss that tastes eye-wateringly bitter). And when that’s all done, he’ll create a bespoke cocktail to match your newly-refined taste-profile, which you can then keep forever to the envy of all. Beats trying to come up with your own ‘concoction’ next time you’re hosting a 4am afterparty, that’s for sure.

Time 6-8pm, 8:30-10:30pm
Place: Paramount, 103 Oxford Street ,WC1A 1DD
Cost: £15 adv.

SHOP
Andy Warhol for Rosenthal

So technically these are probably meant to be hung on your wall, but there’s something so perversely enticing about eating off Marilyn Monroe’s face that we just have to have these Andy Warhol Pop Art plates. Limited to just 500 pieces, whether you want them to lend their brightness (and cultural appreciation) to your wall or table, as a limited edition run of just 500 pieces you’re just going to have to race us to ’em.

FOOD: Disappearing Dining Club Dinner Dance
The Disappearing Dining Club are up to their old tricks again this weekend (disappearing and dining – an oddly regular feature), this time taking over the outdoor Summer House dining space at the new Red Market. Join them (’cause you definitely can’t beat them) for a smorgasbord of smokey delights including Smoked Lobster Gazpacho, Smoked Roast Strip Loin and Smoked Neal’s Yard Cheese Tart. Tickets will not only get you food and a welcome cocktail, but also access to the Flying Circus at the Red Gallery that same evening (a highlight at this year’s Miami WMC and similarly high on our to-do list).

Time: 6:30-10pm
Place: The Summer House, 3 Rivington Street,
EC2A 3DT
Cost: £50 adv.

EAT: The Corner Room at Town Hall Hotel
If you still haven’t been to Viajante then this might be a way to  dip your toes in. Nuno Mendes’ latest project- the neighbourhood bistro style ‘The Corner Room’- has recently joined Viajante at the Town Hall Hotel, putting Bethnal Green firmly on the foodie map. Like everything else hot  these days (read the Russell Norman empire) The Corner Room has a no  bookings policy, but as it’s a Saturday, we say go early, and  hopefully you’ll be in in no time. Mains are around £10-£12, and  definitely have the Nuno touch. If you go this weekend and get a  table, save us a seat- there’s a Squid, Jersey Royals & Fennel dish  with our name written all over it.

Time: 7am-10pm
Place: The Town Hall Hotel,Patriot Square, E2 9NF
Cost: Various

ART: Free Range 2011
Who doesn’t like a bit of free range these days? It all started with the chicken, then the egg, now it’s moved on to the art, graphics and product design. Every summer, the Old Truman Brewery is transformed into a monumental art and design exhibition space to showcase the work of the hottest young creatives, freshly turned out of universities nationwide. Cast your eye over illustration, textiles and photography and catch the stars of tomorrow before they hit the big time. And, since it’s a market Sunday, you can top up on the awesome Korean BBQ just over the road afterwards. Art and food? Talk about spoiling you!

Time: 10am-9pm
Place: Old Truman Brewery, 91 Brick Lane, London, E1 6QL
Cost: Free

MUSIC: Vocals At The Vortex
The very term ‘open-mic night’ is usually enough to invoke a reflex scan of the room for the nearest emergency exit. But this being a Sunday, and this being the Vortex, there’ll be more than enough to keep us in our seats at this jazz open-mic soiree hosted by singer Romy Summers. With musical accompaniment from the Bob Stuckey Trio and special guest singers Laurence Mackenzie and Anne Peck on hand, sit back (glass in hand, natch) and revel in some top tunes and aspiring vocal talent.

Time: 7:30pm
Place: Vortex Dalston, 11 Gillett Square, London, N16 8AZ
Cost: £8
Info: Vocals At The Vortex

BOOK AHEAD
Summer Series at Somerset House

A few weeks ago, when the full-line up for this year’s Summer Series at Somerset House was announced, the gig menu seemed plentiful enough that we didn’t bother booking anything just yet. A buncr'h of this years dates have already sold out (you can kiss goodbye to Eels, Blondie and Ellie Goulding) but there are still tickets available for electronica legends Lamb – which makes us rather happy. Other remaining highlights include Professor Green and Imelda May, but whatever tickles your fancy, we suggest you move fast!

Somerset House, Strand, London, WC2R 1LA.
Lamb play July 16, 8pm. £22.50-£35
