For some strange reason, there’s a serious retail vibe going on this weekend (not that we’re complaining of course) - so it’s looking like a good weekend to scratch the ol’ shopping-itch. But if fashion isn’t your thing (infidels!) there’s plenty to get involved with, from vibrant gastro-love to a gig-drenched pair of musical micro-fests. Plus there’s little culture thrown in to boot. Well, it would be rude not to…

TODAY
Christopher Kane Sample Sale
We loved the acid brights and Planet of the Apes-esque gear of his ‘09 summer collection, and had a mild crush on the geisha-ness of his A/W10 - so now’s the time to top-up on Christopher Kane goodness at a sliver of the price. Alongside statement t-shirts, the sample sale features pieces from the young designer's catwalk shows from the last few years. But be prepared to fight for the good stuff!
Londonewcastle Depot, 1-3 Wenlock Road, N1 7S1.

PARTY PHOTOS
UJ Pool Party at Cowley Manor
We came, we saw, we pool partied! Last weekend, UJ joined forces with the stunning Cowley Manor for our inaugural luxury house-party. From chilled Campo Viejo cava and Bombay Sapphire cocktails (Elderflower Collins and Gin Breeze) to bright blue skies and all-night sets from our resident DJs, it was an amazing way to celebrate a hot summer evening. Rounding off with a picnic out on the Cowley's endless fields and lakes, needless to say coming back home was tough.
If you weren't able to make it down: keep your eyes peeled for our next house-party. But for now, thanks to everyone who joined us and got involved, and we’ll see you all at the next one!

MUSIC
Rory Gallagher
When Jimi Hendrix was asked how it felt to be the greatest guitarist in the world, he famously answered "I don’t know, go ask Rory Gallagher." Now, Sony have released a double-CD set of the musician’s lost 1978 studio album Notes from San Francisco, along with an unreleased live show from the following year - and rock buffs are already drooling. Recorded by the guy behind Neil Young’s Harvest and The Band’s The Last Waltz, the album was abandoned due to studio tensions. But Gallagher, who died in 1995, said he hoped it would surface and get remixed. Celeb fans, like Slash and Johnny Marr, should be happy.

BOOK AHEAD
The Infernal Comedy
Empire of the Sun and Dangerous Liaisons are a couple of our favourite John Malkovich films - although it’s hard to top the moment he climbed into his own head in Being John Malkovich. So we can't believe there are still tickets available to catch the actor treading the boards at the Barbican next week, where he'll play a real-life Austrian serial killer, flanked only by two sopranos and an orchestra. It's not an easy move for a film star who could be spending his days by the pool in Hollywood, but Malkovich has said he wants to show a murderer's human face… We can’t wait!
June 17-18, 7.30pm, Barbican Centre, Silk Street, EC2Y 8DS, £11-£35

This week’s hottest foodie destination
José
The man behind Brindisa branches out
104 Bermondsey Street, SE1 3UB.
020 7403 4902 (no reservations)
www.josepizarro.com
Location
A prime corner spot on Bermondsey Street where, on a sunny lunchtime, the scene is so salubrious you suspect Richard Curtis to be somehow involved (or Woody Allen, at least). Floor-to-ceiling windows give you a ringside seat onto the lives of the lucky locals, with their warehouse flats, cool independent shops and cute dogs. Opposite is the excellent Garrison, useful if José is packed - which is not unlikely, it being both muy pequeno and sin reservas.
Vibe
José Pizarro’s aim is to create an authentically Spanish tapas and sherry bar - but this place is way more stylish than anywhere we’ve ever found on holiday. It's chic, efficient and buzzy, with an unobtrusive house soundtrack and great looking staff. It’s a tough call between sitting at the counter as the chefs cook up a storm, or facing out onto the street to people-watch. In the evenings, you’re unlikely to get the luxury of such choice: the place is a mob scene.
Flavours
The menu, which changes every three to four weeks, follows classic lines: think impeccably sourced single-ingredient dishes, such as boquerones doused in Cava vinegar, and well-executed standards like patatas bravas and chorizo in red wine. Daily specials depend on what’s good at the market. We tried loin of pork, cooked very rare - Pizarro came out from the kitchen to explain that the pig’s diet had consisted solely of acorns ‘and the odd mouse’.
Décor
Somehow, in such a small space, they’ve managed to include every design element desired by the urban(e) set: exposed brickwork, aged wooden beams, industrial girders and light fittings, rustic tiles, plus white marble counters to reflect the light and make everyone’s skin look gorgeous. Legs of jamon hang from the ceiling, and piles of fresh, glossy prawns and asparagus sit behind glass on the counter, waiting to be cooked to order.
Upshot
Small but beautifully formed, José is a welcome addition to the current spate of stylish, lively tapas joints in the city. Warning: a visit may induce serious SE1 lifestyle envy.
