Weekend Guide

We’re not getting too morose about waving our pals off to Glasto today: the forecast says drizzly for tomorrow at least, and frankly, we’d rather be watching the action at the W Hotel, where Absinthe Martinis will be served in a plush (and dry) screening room. It’s all happening here in London anyway, from world-class opera to foraged suppers and über-camp Mexican luchadors. The only thing that would make us leave is a ticket to Ibiza, where it’s wall-to-wall sun all week…

RELAUNCH
Nike 1948

If you’re wandering through Shoreditch this weekend, stop in at this re-launched space and have a look at Nike’s newest designs – we love their American Football-inspired NSW autumn/winter collection, especially the Sixties-style jacket with gold sleeves. There’s more going on than clothes too, with art installations inspired by sports and tables to hang out or work at, all wrapped up in sleek, minimalist design. It’s enough to make jogging seem sexy…

SHOP
Kensal Flea

It’s not hard to get us anywhere that’s serving gourmet burgers and mac’n’cheese, so if we’re not to be found at Space NK’s amazing summer sale this weekend, we’ll be rummaging through vintage shawls at this (indoor) summer fair in W10’s yummy mummy neighbourhood. It’s not just any old tat they’ll be flogging: think goat skin bags from nineteen57, lovely vintage furniture, accessories sourced from India, live music and La Dinette macaroons to keep you going.

Sat 12-5.30pm, Paradise by The Way Of Kensal Green and St Johns Church car park, Kilburn Lane, W10 4AA. £1

FOOD: Foraged Supper Club
When we hear the words “foraged supper club,” our first thoughts are of freegans crammed into a poky flat, but this is something else. Pimms on the terrace of Kew Garden’s spectacular Orangery, followed by live jazz while you dine on edible flowers, exotic vegetables and other goodies foraged from the surrounding gardens. Hosted weekly by Peyton & Byrne, it’s the sort of night out we could get used to.

Time: 8pm
Place: Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew, TW9 3AB
Cost: £55 adv
Info: Foraged Supper Club

MUSIC: Don Pasquale
Nothing says summer like a bit of outdoor culture with champagne, so we’re glad there are still tickets for the last night of OHP’s opening show of the season. It’s a version of the Italian love story relocated to an English seaside town, and although it’s sung in the original, there are surtitles to help you make the most of the scheming, mix-ups and jokes.

Time: 7.30pm
Place: Holland Park Opera.
Cost: £46.50-63.50
Info: Don Pasquale

OTHER: Folly For A Flyover
Splashing about in a rowing boat in the stark industrial surroundings of the A12 flyover sounds like a novel way to spend an afternoon, especially when you can stop off at a café for a bacon roll afterwards and then watch a movie. It’s all happening from a building that has appeared in the gap between the A road’s east and westbound traffic, built out of reclaimed materials, and we think it’s going to be magical.

Time: 2pm - 6pm
Place: Under the A12 Flyover, Hackney Wick, E9 5HW
Cost: Many activities free

ART: Mike Figgis: Kate & Other Women
Want a little advice on becoming a game-changing art house director? Maybe you should head to this sexy exhibition on Saturday and have a word with the Timecode and Leaving Las Vegas director – he’ll be signing books between noon and 1pm. Alternatively, go to check out Mossy and others reclining in lingerie, suspenders and heels – it might be all the inspiration you need.

Time: Until July 30, Tue-Fri 11am-6pm, Sat 11-5pm
Place: The Little Black Gallery, 13A Park Walk, SW10 0AJ
Cost: Free

COMPETITION
Win hampers of Yardley London’s beauty products

It’s nice to find men’s beauty products that smell of real things – spices, herbs, trees – instead of chemicals, so we’re big fans of Yardley’s new fragrance Citrus & Wood, its first for men for six years. We’d love to get our hands on one of their luxury hampers stuffed with fragrance, bath and body products for men and women (worth £100 each), but we’ve got to give all five away to you people. Email us with the subject line “Yardley London Competition” to be in with a chance of winning.

EAT: Rock Lobsta
We’re not sure if it counts as hangover food, but a half English lobster served on a brioche-style roll and drenched in saffron and garlic mayo sounds like it could revive us from just about anything. That’s one of the options, alongside a half dozen crayfish in a paper cone, that will be served from an east London clothes shop this weekend – it’s one of the best gastro pop-up ideas we’ve heard yet.

Time: from 6pm Thur, 12-9pm Fri-Sun
Place: Luna & Curious, 24-26 Calvert Street, E2 7JP
Cost: Free
Info: Rock Lobsta

ART: Lucha Future
If you’ve never been to a Mexican wrestling match before, you’ve never seen anything quite like it. Muscular transvestites, midgets in capes, heroes and villains bounce acrobatically around the ring, flipping over the ropes, landing on each other’s heads, and making each other beg for mercy. There’s margaritas and nachos on tap, and a Mexican band to help you get into the swing of things. Don’t question it – just go.

Time: Fri-Sun 7pm
Place: Roundhouse, Chalk Farm Road, NW1 8EH
Cost: £22.25-54

Da Polpo
The new bacaro on the block

6 Maiden Lane, London, WC2E 7NA.
020 7836 8448 (no reservations at dinner)

www.dapolpo.co.uk

Location
Having blessed Soho with a buzzy trio of small-plate, high-style restaurants, Polpo founder Russell Norman has decided to give Theatreland a piece of the action. With its classy green frontage and discreetly customized linen curtains, new venture da Polpo sits confidently understated beside its try-hard neighbours.

Vibe
Of the three Polpo offspring, if Spuntino is the cool one, and Polpetto the sexy one, then da Polpo is the approachable one. The one you might bring your mother to – not least because she wouldn’t have to wait two hours for her chicheti. With seventy seats over two floors it’s far roomier than the others, and airy, too, thanks to a large skylight. The soundtrack is crowd-pleasing – the Stones, Johnny Cash, The Smiths – and both customers and staff are less raffish than in Soho.

Flavours
Meatballs, pizzete, asparagus, heritage tomatoes: the brown paper menu sticks to the winning formula of its predecessors and, indeed, why wouldn’t it? Nothing we tried was less than delicious and booze, as always, is spot on. We wanted another aperol spritz even whilst consuming the first, while the bellini sgroppino, which blends prosecco and lemon sorbet was the slushie of our dreams.

Décor
Like its siblings, da Polpo looks terrific: bruised cream paintwork, wooden pews, rusted tin panels on the ceiling, reclaimed fittings and bare light bulbs aglow with fashionable filaments. Old pictures of Venice on the wall remind you that the place was inspired by the city’s traditional bacaros, but the style borrows as much from über-cool joints in the Meatpacking district.

Upshot
The Norman conquest continues with another fine addition to the Polpo family – and, apparently, the last in the line of bacaros before he moves onto his next bright idea. You’re less likely to spot someone famous than in Soho, but have more chance of a seat.
