Weekend Guide
UJ Banner

OK, it's festival-rama this weekend – Lovebox, iTunes Festival, Somerset House’s Summer Series, Latitude – but, for us, it’s all about the after parties. Keep your ears open, we hear there are some good ones brewing.....In between, we’re planning to cram in some sale shopping, animal spotting, (very) modern dance and a trip to our favourite supper club. If you're out and about this weekend, send us tweets (@urbanjunkies) to let us know what is good where and we'll find you there!

OPEN NOW
Poncho No 8 Old Compton Street

Mexican is definitely the fast food trend of the moment, but unfortunately there are still so few haunts that do it really well! We have high hopes for the new Poncho No 8 opening on Old Compton Street tomorrow; hopefully they'll be memorising our daily order before long (make ours a skinny burrito with steak and extra guacamole please). They are also the first Poncho with a liquor licence, and are stocking Mexican beers and a selection of tequilas: dangerous.

32 Old Compton Street, W1D 4TP.

MUSIC: Metropole Orkest vs. Basement Jaxx
Hold up, hold up! Basement Jaxx singers with a 70-piece Dutch orchestra known for mixing jazz and orchestral sounds? This sounds like our kind of evening. The Basement Jaxx ladies are taking to the mic for a crazy mash up extravaganza- from the video, it seems like it's definitely going to be one not to miss.

Time: 7.30pm
Place: Barbican, Silk Street,
EC2Y 8DS
Cost: £20-30
Info: Metropole Orkest vs. Basement Jaxx

NIGHTLIFE: Zoo Lates
If you haven't made it to a 'Zoo Lates' yet, now there’s even more reason to go. This weekend all of our favourite street food vendors are rocking up, including Churros Bros., Meatwagon, Jamon Jamon, Bhangra Burger and BánhmÍ11. We might have to order a  bit of everything. It's going to be crowded though, so elbows out.

Time: 6-10pm
Place: London Zoo, Regent’s Park, NW1 4RY
Cost: £18.45
Info: Zoo Lates

Extra Vitamin D! Sunlight on your face! Grass under your feet! The latest addition to the Nike Training Club roster (iPhone app, free classes at Nike Town, sessions at Gymbox and Third Space) is a series of outdoor workouts in three London parks. ART: Jake or Dinos Chapman at White Cube
Some art is dazzling, some just makes for good conversation. “Are the Chapman Brothers any good individually?” is the question of the day at this new exhibition – the artists have been making their work together for two decades, now they’ve been holing up in their separate studios for the past year and this show is the result. Expect the usual preoccupation with sex and death; apart from that, all bets are off.

Time: July 15-Sept 17, Tue-Sat 10am-6pm
Place: White Cube Hoxton Square, 48 Hoxton Square, N1 6PB and White Cube Mason's Yard, 25-26 Mason’s Yard, SW1 6BU
Cost: Free

DANCE: Hofesh Shechter: Political Mother - The Choreographer's Cut
If the way all the broadsheets have been drooling over bad-boy Israeli choreographer Shechter hasn’t convinced you to see his rocking contemporary dance show (not an oxymoron, apparently), maybe this clip of his opening dance sequence for Skins will. Sexy, edgy, blunt: this isn’t a night at the ballet.

Time: 7.30pm
Place: Sadler's Wells, Rosebery Avenue, EC1R 4TN
Cost: £10-27
Info: Hofesh Shechter: Political Mother - The Choreographer's Cut

BOOK AHEAD
Boom Boom Club

You can’t fake this kind of fabulousness. For every dozen “retro” parties with burlesque acts that turn out to be not much more than gothy strippers, there’s something like this: Jonny Woo, Dusty Limits, Bourgeois & Maurice and the rest of London’s alt royalty; the atmospheric Old Vic tunnels, amazing décor, offbeat food, a gorgeous crowd. We’re planning our outfits now, and telling all our friends to book tickets fast.

Old Vic Tunnels, Station Approach Road, SE1 7NN.
July 21-23 & 28-30, doors 7pm, show 8pm, Sat until 3am.

SHOP
Flash sales

Is there any feeling smugger than wearing a beautiful Alexander McQueen creation out and knowing you got it for a steal at a sample sale? We’re planning on getting that glow after this 10-day Shoreditch sale full of discount clothes (up to 70% off) from not only McQueen but Vivienne Westwood, Chloe and Commes des Garcon. Stock will be “refreshed” each day, so we’re trying to work out how often we can make the trip, and we’ll be examining everything on Facebook first.

July 13-20, Tue-Sat 11am-7pm, Sun 12-5pm,
98 Commercial Street, E1 6QG .

MUSIC: Lovebox
Lovebox. Wow. £50 (okay, £48.50) per day on the weekend, Saturday's sold out; my this festival has grown up. If Friday is going to be the serious rock-and-electro night, and Saturday is the big hip-hop and pop one (hi, Snoop Dogg), Sunday’s the night that’s diva-tastic. Beth Ditto, Kelis, Robyn, Blondie, Scissor Sisters: you’re going to be elbowing glitter-covered ravers out of the way if you want to get anywhere near the front. Even though we're partial to Friday night (you can actually move around), and would like to see Snoop on Saturday (we missed him at Amnesia), we're all about Sunday. See you there!

Time: 12-10.30pm
Place: Victoria Park, E9 7BT
Cost: £48.50
Info: Lovebox

FOOD: Pale Blue Door
The food (salad, roast beef, gooseberry fool) isn’t the point at this Dalston supper club hosted by East End drag queen Tony Hornecker: it’s the insane atmosphere of the mismatched, colourful, art-installation-like house (Hornecker was a set designer for Kylie), the tranny waiting staff, the performances and drinking going on late into the night. We’re so glad it’s back, although tickets are going very, very fast.

Time: 8pm or 8.30pm (two options available)
Place: Secret Dalston location.
Cost: £35
Info: Pale Blue Door

WINECHAP'S WEEKEND WINES:
WineChap's weekend round up

Crappy British summer jokes aside, it is the season of crisp whites apparently (but when is it not? – when does anyone ever really want a custardy, 15% Californian Chardonnay these days?) and barbecue reds. Below are a few wines tried recently that stuck in the memory:

Drink Out
Piemonte Cortese, Ca Del Matt: A slightly jealous Gavi (it’s made in the neighbouring hills) but the same Chablis on a Vespa style without the price tag: A quenching lunch white at L'Anima in the city or Ristorante Semplice, off Bond Street.

Drink In
All about Alentejo. Try the Alvarino 2010 from Terras d'Alter for a refreshingly drinkable seafood white, otherwise this southern Portuguese estate's Verdelho is excitingly herbal – a nose of cloves and mint on the mid-palate. Both from www.leaandsandeman.co.uk

Bring Round
Pals are throwing caution to the wind (and rain) and going ahead with their BBQ this weekend, so – keeping with the Portuguese theme – why not try Tons de Duorum. Straddling the boundary between rustic and sophisticated this is honest, spicy, real wine made in the Douro from Port varietals. Buy online from www.therealwineco.co.uk

WineChap's alternative summer selection (Barolo and Oloroso sherry etc) can be seen online on WineChap TV. Also check out our events schedule for forthcoming tastings in town and with wedding season off and running let us choose your wines for the big day and for an alternative wine wedding list. (How many John lewis waffle irons do you really need?)
