An Ode to Battersea
Boujis, The Hatch, Powder Keg Diplomacy…
Battersea, is that you?
Ah, Batt-er-see-ah, my old faithful. Like neighbouring Cla’hm, what is it about you that seems so darned far away (almost like another country – somewhere a little nearer than Timbuktu, say) yet compels us to explore further?
|
|
(At this point, dear Battersians, we apologise if we’re causing any offence. We mean no harm – we’re just trying to get out past Zone 1 a little more…) I mean, it’s not like you don’t have your attractions; your own magnets of cool.
Take Street Kitchen. Not content with feeding the City locally-sourced fare from their slick Airstream (grilled plaice with roasted beetroot and smokey crushed potatoes anyone?), chefs Jun Tanaka and Mark Jankel are now setting up home just off Battersea Bridge Road, serving lunch from a secret hatch (it’s called The Hatch, cunningly), within an otherwise unassuming warehouse. How very Dalston.
And if you head to the Power Station this Friday, you’re sure of a big surprise. Okay, so maybe less surprising given that you have to book in advance. But still: bringing legendary French DJ Bob Sinclair to town, Boujis are back at the iconic landmark after their involvement in the LFW Cavalli do, offering a full-on night of glamourously wall-to-wall mischief. And we guess £150 per ticket isn’t really so bad when you consider that it includes complimentary drinks.
Speaking of drinks: hello Powder Keg Diplomacy! With its perfectly-crafted punches and Victoriana-spiked cocktails, Battersea's Diplomacy is truly up there in London’s favourite booze spots of the moment.
There, we said it: Battersea. Cool.

Any excuse to boogie, right? And when it’s for art, well, how could you not? To explain: ABSOLUT VODKA’s latest creative endeavor is an art installation by video artist Samm Farahmand where you get into a box, choose your favourite tune from Spotify, and, basically, get down. And you’re in good company too. As well as us at UJ (you’ll have to flick through the videos to find us letting loose to No Diggity and I Wanna Be Your Lover), Jodie Harsh, Jamie Winston and Marc Hare have all had a go. Check out the Absolut UK Facebook page (gallery section) to see what it’s all about and to win tix to the finale – where the best videos will be mixed into a live audio-visual set by Jamie XX.
