And what brings more simple pleasure on a night out than bubbles? From the luxury of vintage champagne to the fun of cava, give us the right company, and we’re not even that fussy.
First on our radar is The Balcon – it may not be the newest in town (opened mid October) and sure it’s a little on the swanky side – but it also does some very exclusive vintage numbers by the glass that are absolutely worth it. Particularly well-versed in their bubble-lore, The Balcon sommeliers certainly led us to a few flutes deliciously different to our usual Veuve or Billie-Salmon ( the Paul Déthune, Blanc de Noir is a must).
And speaking of flutes: what about Flute (sorry that should read: Flûte. The accent apparently requisite for pulling one’s mouth into the perfect champagne slurping pucker). The first London branch – opening 8 December on 4 Great Portland Street – from the effervescent-centric group with bars in Paris and New York, expect Kirs galore and a mountain of fizzes by the, well, flûte.
Over in Bermondsey, meanwhile, is José Pizarro’s sequel to his diminutive tapas spot, José – the not so subtly entitled Pizarro. Its launch nudged back from this week, we’ve found ourselves hungrily wondering:
1) quite how much we’re going to enjoy working our way through his “extensive list” of cavas; and
2) whether he’s going to start cracking out the middle names now that both his first and last name are all used up.
And lastly, if you're feeling like champagne in a dark and sultry setting – it may not be new, but a current UJ fave, the Beaufort Bar at the Savoy has a stellar champagne list, with several by the glass.
Bubbles, get some in.
