Combining a shared pre-dinner drink and spot of antipasti, it’s perhaps not a completely different bowl of Campari, as it were. But definitely a trend that we’re relishing post-work at the moment.
Let’s start our celebration with Massimo, home of a brand new menu of fine bites which launched just last week, all of which pair amazingly with their range of eponymous artisanal beers (a refreshing alternative to their already much loved wine list). Couple that with still one of our favourite interiors del giorno and what’s not to like?
Then there’s Trullo, on Highbury Corner. Already a famed neighbourhood Italian, they’ve now launched their Trullo Downstairs where you can relish in a more laidback, bare-brick atmosphere with fine aperitivo cocktails and share plates.
Continuing on the neighbourhood track is also NW5’s The Vine, where you’ll find over over twenty reasonably priced small plates including clams with aioli and mixed mushroom polenta.
If you’re in town with a few hours to kill, even Archer Street are doing complimentary aperitivo between 6pm and 7:30pm every night. Needless to say we thoroughly approve – particularly as that empowers us to indulge in a few more early evening glasses of Billecart Salmon Rosé before the real hunger sets in.
With so many restaurants and bars getting in on this (even the Zizzi has cichetti advertised in their gleaming new St. Giles High Street windows), no doubt we’ll feel inundated by the trend in a couple months. (We’re fickle like that.) But for now, make ours a mixed plate of panfried scarmoza, antipasti and bruschettine, with a Negroni Sbagliato on the side and enough room for a late dinner.
