Option #1: go tropical. Perhaps a little obvious, but Tulum really does keep cropping up on our where-to-go lists – and Design Hotels’ new Papaya Playa is the perfect destination. Stretching out over 900 metres of idyllic beach, the “raw-luxe camp” features 99 cabanas ranging from the $25 bare essentials through to a private five-bedroom house with its own outdoor living room, plus Berlin’s Bar 25 taking care of the drinks, the seasonal food, and the (no doubt killer) DJ line-up.
If planning ahead is more your bag then try Option #2: A Room For London. A pop-up hotel boat, perched atop the Southbank Centre for the whole of 2012 like a one-bed Noah’s Ark, it’s our pick for getting away from it all, without actually getting away from it all. But since it’s already booked out until June, hit the booking lines as soon as the next round of slots goes up for sale and snap up next Christmas, while you remember.
Alternatively, if you can’t hold out for either Mexico or 2012, then try the ghetto pop-up hotel option. So ghetto, in fact, that it doesn’t even do beds.
For this month only, The Peckham Hotel, involving the district’s favourite artist-champion Hannah Barry, features different creative individuals and groups hosting all manner of artistic mischief, complete with lounge, bar, mini-bar and landscaped garden with fabled hot tub.
