After the bank holiday’s excessive party/drink/travel picks, we decided to hang low(er) this weekend (at least a bit, we couldn’t resist a couple of parties…). So: head west on Friday for a modern take on Greek tragedy followed by an international house-techno party; go east on Saturday for some Britart before a Brixton Soul Clap party, and finish on Sunday with a step sideways to Bermondsey to sample Pizarro’s new Sunday brunch menu (hooray!) and the Independent Film Festival. And we finally get the lowdown on The Scotch…

The Scotch of St James |
Known most recently as the place where Stella had her LFW party - The Scotch has officially launched this month. Tucked away in Mason’s Yard, this was the hangout of London’s rock elite in the 60s (The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Stevie Wonder and Jimi Hendrix all performed here). Once again The Scotch has become the den of London’s crème - think English lodge meets Art Deco: reworked tartan, dark oak, booths and hedonistic-themed cocktails. It’s by appointment only so for more info email office@the-scotch.co.uk.

THEATRE:

PARTY:
What Happens Next at Supperclub |
Incest, loincloths, giant eyeballs… just your usual Greek tragedy. Or is it? Spymonkey and Kneehigh artistic director Emma Rice have teamed up to bring a little comic surrealism to the ultimate dysfunctional family. Inspired by Barbarella and Bond, expect physical comedy, skimpy costumes and a sing-along about leprosy. Stay late, grab a Brera pizza from the bar and head to the Lyric’s roof terrace for a little alfresco action.
A new house-techno party for you, this time out west in one of the few joints that stays open ‘til late from the guys behind Love Brunch. Enjoy some cocktails (or dinner) in the bar area before enjoying the sounds in the main room: underground house DJ and Ibiza regular Robert James, deep house kings Audiojack and forward-thinking dance from LA’s Droog (who were also responsible for the Standard Hotel rooftop parties) amongst others. For £10 entry and guestlist email here quoting Urban Junkies.

Soul Clap present the Efunk Album Tour |
If you enjoyed Hirst at Tate Modern then head to another of the YBA collective’s retrospectives: Gillian Wearing. Expect the very best of her politically poetic photographs and films, including first exhibition "Signs that say what you want them to say and not Signs that say what someone else wants you to say". Deep. You can even send in your own hand-written sign to Tell Gillian on Facebook and Twitter - she’ll be announcing her faves in May.

It’s about time Boston-born/Miami-based duo Soul Clap brought out an album: the intergalactic party pair has landed in London this weekend as part of their launch tour. Expect house-heavy tracks with the usual dose of funk, soul, hip hop and collaborations (All Saints’ Mel Blatt included). Oh and fun, lots of fun: see what we mean by checking out their Clapping Song video.

Ceviche is everywhere at the moment - from Red Snapper at La Bodega Negra to a whole outpost in Soho - so it’s high time you learned to DIY. Gaucho are hosting a Ceviche-based dinner and masterclass where you can learn (and eat) original and classic takes on the dish from Gaucho chefs. Trade in your pisco for a Malbec though, as there’ll be a bespoke wine selection to match.

EAT:
Pizarro Brunch |
FILM:
London Independent Film Festival at Shortwave |
We love José. We love Pizarro. (And everyone loves the man himself.) So of course we love the news that Pizarro now has a brunch menu. Fresh OJ, eggs with morcilla, manchego or chorizo, Ibérico pork burgers with patatas fritas… this is morning snack time with a difference. Take a seat at the window, sip your cortado (strong espresso with steamed milk) and watch the Bermondsey set (and their many dogs) walk by.
Stick around after your Sunday brunch for a dose of independent cinema. LIFF runs all week, showcasing indie films usually ignored by mainstream movie moguls. An afternoon of shorts is our pick of the week at local fave Shortwave (The Roxy down the road also has screenings). Get your cultural fix then sit at the bar for homemade pizza and cocktails. Oh and chat to owner Rob about his collection of donated curios behind the bar…
