Weekend Guide

Let’s get one thing out of the way first. If you’re in Brazil this weekend (or are looking for an excuse to jet off) then there are still tickets left for Sónar São Paolo, the festival’s biggest event outside of Spain. We’ve gone for an international slant this weekend, with some home and away options - you know, in case you just happen to be in LA/NY/Paris. Try ECC or the new Prada/Schiaparelli exhibition in New York, a Standard Hotel rooftop party in LA, a new club in Paris, the Grand Prix in Monaco or Sunset Beach. If you have to stay on home soil then no matter: we’ve got Grandmaster Flash, a tequila clubhouse and Kate Moss doing yoga poses.

This Weekend’s Picks

• FRI ECC New York • SAT Impossible Conversations
• SUN Grandmaster Flash at Brixton Clubhouse

OPENING SOON

WANDERLUST PARIS

If anybody knows how to do nightlife, it’s the Parisians (Le Baron…). Nightlife connoisseur Arnaud Frisch (behind the Social Club and Silencio) has created a new cultural club/hub. Situated on the Docks-Cité de la Mode et du Design, Wanderlust will be home to Paris’ largest terrace on the banks of the Seine, as well as a restaurant (headed up by Benjamin Darnaud of Paris’ equivalent to MasterChef), club (avec international DJs), bar, exhibitions, open-air cinema, pop-up shops and health mornings. Yoga followed by food followed by party? See you there.

Wanderlust, 32 Quai d’Austerlitz, 75013 Paris
Wednesdays to Sundays from 12pm-6am, opens May 30

DRINK HOME:
CHAMUCOS CLUBHOUSE
  DRINK AWAY:
ECC New York

Mexican mecca Crazy Homies is embracing Tom Conran’s new spirit with a Chamucos Clubhouse dedicated to tequila. Feast on the usual ceviche and tacos in the restaurant, then head downstairs to the tequila lounge serving cocktails with a wicked twist (Satanic Sunset, Devil’s Punchbowl). Sultry lighting, murals and Mexican street art complete the Latin American mix – think Day of the Dead, every day.   The French trio behind the original ECC in Paris (and London’s very own late night haunt) have finally made it back to the fatherland (NY was their inspiration). If you’re in the Big A then head here for aged liquor, vintage décor (think weathered tin ceilings, chaise lounges, marble fireplaces) and snacks from the nearby Fat Radish restaurant. Go late, peruse the highly edited cocktail list, and search for the secret one-way-mirrored bar.

EXHIBITION HOME:
Manifold Editions at St Martins Lane
  EXHIBITION AWAY:
Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations

Everyone remembers Marc Quinn’s suggestive sculptures of Kate Moss holding complicated yoga poses. This month, St Martins Lane’s Front Room plays host to new prints of the iconic Sphinx sculpture (in gold and silver leaf), as well as new works by others from the Manifold Editions stable: Damien Hirst, Gary Hume, Elizabeth Magill and George Shaw. You can also pick up the Sphinx print online for your mantelpiece/home gym.    An unmissable costume exhibition with a twist at the NY Met. Hotly anticipated Impossible Conversations explores the striking affinities between two iconic Italian women who have never met, Elsa Schiaparelli and Miuccia Prada. Baz Luhrmann has directed orchestrated interviews between the two, while the rest of the exhibition categorises the women’s designs into thematic areas – Waist Up/Waist Down, Neck Up/Knees Down, Ugly Chic, Naïf Chic, The Surreal Body.

PARTY HOME:
Grandmaster Flash
at Brixton Clubhouse
  PARTY AWAY:
THE STANDARD, DOWNTOWN LA ROOFTOP PARTY

A bit of Sunday afternoon hip hop never hurt anybody. Especially when it’s on a Brixton rooftop with Grandmaster Flash. The king of the backspin heads up the next event in a series of rooftop summer parties at the Brixton Clubhouse, along with some disco and house from Mister Shiver, Kid Fury and Loudat. We’ll be getting down to this.   Or you could go for a warmer, chicer rooftop (with heated pool) the other side of the pond. LA’s Standard Hotel rooftop parties have become an institution, and this Sunday is no different, with club-ready house from The Martinez Brothers and deeper sounds from Nikko Gibler. While you’re in the area stop by another longstanding institution, The Beverly Hills Hotel. They’re celebrating their centenary this weekend with special packages, a reworked cocktail menu and 1912 prices.

MEATmarket – Another meaty offering from London’s burger king

The Deck, Jubilee Market Hall, Tavistock Street, WC2E 8BE
www.themeatmarket.co.uk | info@theMEATmarket.co.uk

Location
On the balcony above Covent Garden’s crowded Jubilee Market lies MEATmarket, the next installment from Yianni Papoutsis (of MEATliquor and The Meatwagon). Overlooking the bustle of the stalls below, it’s a great spot to escape the tourists (who we’re hoping will be put off by the tacky takeaway signs).
Vibe
The lit-up menu boards borrowed from cheap kebab shops and Chinese restaurants lining the entrance give it away: this place is all about fun. Those who’ve been to MEATliquor will notice that MEATmarket is brighter (you can actually see your food here) and altogether more relaxed than its Marylebone sister, though access will be the same if the ‘no queue jumping sign’ is anything to go by.
Flavours
Forget the overwhelming choice MEATliquor has to offer – here the highly edited list makes for easy choosing. It’s all very 70s Americana: faves Dead Hippie and Double Bubble made the cut (as well as new addition Black Palace), hot dogs come in ripper, corndog and kraut variations, while new side Poppaz – deep fried jalapeño and cheese croquettes – are deliciously crisp (purists can stick to fries). A Jägermeister float or homemade soft ice are the dessert offerings, or simply round off with a Miami Nice (half piña colada and half strawberry daiquiri slushie), a hard shake (with liquor) or a soda. There’s no syrupy straight-from-the-pump coke here.
Décor
If MEATliquor is dark, gritty and meaty (read: pigs, deer and other dead wildlife on the walls) then MEATmarket is a wholly different experience. Everything from the fast food-style boards, counters and slushie machines, down to the trucker hats and glittery talons of staff, scream trailer trash, but with a large dollop of cool. Funny tweets and comments hang from the ceiling in lightboxes, and the no fuss bench/stool set up meets the quick dining ethos.
Upshot
A fun, laid-back counterpart to MEATliquor, MEATmarket proves that burgers-in-vogue (and the queues) show no sign of slowing down. And you can take out.
